As if you needed another reason to drool over the reality-bending graphics of Gran Turismo HD for the PS3, a French automotive enthusiast has taken comparison photos of a real Ferrari versus what you see in the game ... and if it wasn't for the high constrast rendering and HUD we'd have a hard time telling the two apart. Pentagrams and rubber aside, the onlookers in the grass and background blur filter are just as amazing -- as I'm sure the audio and precise handling will be.
Unfortunately, the reality stops with the slip of a wheel. In the demo we played, the cars are completely indestructable and running into that grass to murder all of the unlookers will produce a bumper car bounce. Nevertheless, they can't all be Burnout. This game does what it's intended to do -- just look purdy and be a technology showpiece for Kutaragi.
Personally, I can't wait to buy a Chevette just like mom used to drive.

But as I said in the other GTHD thread:
Why can Midnight Club 3 and Need for Speed: Carbon have real cars with damage models and Gran Turismo can't? Every time I hear that excuse, I look at these other games and wonder...why?
Some manufacturers are OK with it in certain circumstances.
...dont make him come over there and snap your neck.
Which explains why GT4 has sold over 7 million copies and Burnout isn't even close. GT4 has been prided over realism for, oh, forever, while Burnout just tries to capture the thrill of crashes. Many people prefer to play GT4 for that reason, and while it's still cool to crash things, the racing in Burnout is pretty abysmal. That and 750 cars, many of which are so important to history and evoltion of cars that kids these days have no idea what is so important about them. Besides, you shouldn't be crashing anyway; that's kinda the point.
yo!
yo!
the ferrari in GTHD is braking, and the weight is transferring forward. the car leans forward when braking heavily, thats why it looks lower. look around the car and you can tell it is approaching a turn. the GTHD pics have cars that are moving versus real life ferraris that are idle.
on the whole damage thing, i thought i remember hearing somewhere (maybe magic box) that Yamauchi said there will be damage modeling. i would rather wait and see them do it right, than the half assed damage modeling in forza and other games. but you all realize what youre asking for, right? i bet GT damage modeling is gonna make the game much harder. if they make damage realistic, then you can total your car on the last lap and get a big DNF.
And I wouldn't call Gran Turismo a simulation, it's more of a hard-ish arcade racer, unless you're using N1 tires only. GTR2, GTL, rFactor, Race and LfS qualify as sims in my eyes.
All the excuses made up for not including damage are just lame in my eyes, I mean all somewhat proper racing games have it already, even the Race Driver series.
And they better support the clutch and 6 speed gearbox of the Logitech G25 or this is a no go for me.
Praise be the FSM
Praise be the Beer Volcano
Praise be the Stripper Factory
P.S. If I can find the interview that I mentioned...I will post a link to it...might take a while though...it is more than a year old.
