GT 5 Prologue pre-orders approach critical mass, download details also arrive photo

Those Europeans must love their shiny cars — either that, or Sony’s advertising campaign has worked wonders, because according to CVG, nearly one million Euro gamers have pre-ordered Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. And there are still a full ten days to go until the game’s UK PSN launch next Thursday! This would make it the first PS3 game to “go platinum” in Europe before release.

Interestingly enough, the original story actually cited SCEE New Zealand marketing manager Dave Hine as saying that the one-million milestone had been attained. However, Sony confirmed the following to CVG soon afterwards: “...we currently have orders for almost 1 million units of GT5 Prologue across SCEE territories.” Isn’t it just like a Sony higher-up to do something like that?

For those of you considering buying the game off of the PlayStation Store, PS3 Center brings some good news and bad news. Here’s the good news: Polyphony Digital has managed to keep the download below 2 GB; it’ll weigh in at a still-hefty 1.9 GB. The bad news? In order to do that, they had to sacrifice all of the in-game cinematics. That includes the game’s opening intro video and post-event cutscenes, but fear not; they’ll be available for PSN purchasers to download from Gran Turismo TV.

Still, that seems like a minor annoyance to me, and since the Blu-ray Disc hard copy costs the same as the download, I’d just wait the extra day and pick it up in-store — if I were in Europe and wanted this game, that is. What about the rest of you European Dtoiders?

[via CVG and PS3 Center — thanks, Adam!]

No download for me. It's either the hard copy or no copy. I don't even know if I want that game. I looks pretty damn sweet but I'm not going to buy a game that only looks good.

The 4th one was terrible, I doubt the 5th will be any better.

Wow, a million people paying over $30 for a glorified demo... what a way to make some easy cash. This may have Scientology beat...

When they finally do release the full GT5, how much are they going to charge for it, and will it repel thetans?

You're welcome. If this was a Dutch website I would've done the same but, you know, my English isn't THAT good.

On topic again.
In this blog you posted "North American driving die-hards will be able to race in a number of different ways..." but what about the European version? Any info on that? I mean is this really North America Only?

A glorified Demo that is 1080p, runs 60 FPS, has 16 player online races and quite a few tracks for 39.99 and makes most complete racers on the market today look like shit.

Yeah..I'm getting it. Day one.

I'm a sucker for the GT series, it's the reason I ultimately chose PS3 over the 360. I won't preorder, as that's something I just can't ever bring myself to do for any product. But I will definitely be picking up Prologue so as to justify getting one of these.

@Takeshi: No, that was posted before the story with the information on the European release of the game. The US and EU versions of the game will have the same exact content.

I can't wait for this one. I have had my preorder in for some months now. I with Yojimbo on this....call is a glorified demo if you want, but it has all that I need.

Playing bouncy bumper cars with barely any physics isn't my idea of 'simulation'. Meh.

If there's no difference in price, I would definitely pick up a hard-copy. I mean there has to be some sort of benefit to download it instead.

But at the moment, I'm doing neither. Glorified demo or not, it's still not the full game. And it's not so spectacular it needs to be bought several times.

@Y0j1mb0: why do people call it a glorified demo? It has as you said 16 player online races, the gran turismo tv service, the top gear track and about 40 cars. Show me a demo that does that and ill be impressed. Plus its only £20 over here if you find decent shops!

I'll never understand the excitement for this game, to each his own i suppose. But 1 million!!! That's just ridiculous

I'd get it in an instant on disk if I had a PStriple, but due to their price and the fact that I DO think rumble is worth it, I don't have that yet :-)

Also to put the pre-orders a bit in perspective... I think that we'll generally always have a higher percentage of the gaming-community that is pre-ordering since we have less gamestores, I know for a fact that if I would want this game, I should've preordered allready a some weeks ago, they'll be sold out in my town for weeks to come...

You don't need to pre-order it when you buy it online, I bet they'll get more than 10% sales from the online version. That's 100,000 more sold.

You can't scratch a download.

Play is selling the hardcopy for much less than the PSN copy. A whole 12 euros less. I think you'd have to be mad to buy the PSN version when you can disk and then sell it on later.

So a marketing manager says 1 million, and Sony says, almost 1 million. What exactly is almost 1 million?? Is 600000 almost 1 million??

The price is right for what you are getting. This game will be a game that you use to show off your PS3/HDTV combo.

@ Boolean.

D'eeeer GT traditionally has some of the best physics. And really, that's only if you choose to play around with bouncing cars. Admitedly, this happened a lot because of the races with the same exact damn cars - but if you didn't participate in those races, it barely ever happened.

But I don't like the fact of being taken out of a 30 lap race on lap 29, JUST because i happened to take one corner a tad too dangerously and slammed head-on into the boards.

... Yeah I don't care for damage. Bring on the TOP GEAR TRACK! <-- which is the reason why 1 million Europers have ordered it. And Top Gear on GTTV.

... ALSO, GT series have been some of the best minutely tunable cars. Feeling the effect of camber, suspension tuning, gear ratio tuning with the Dynos, controlling downforce, even ESP, stability and YAW control.

Sorry I'm a nut for the GT series. It's frickin' awesome and I'm probably biased =). And I'm getting BRD version on day one!

@Mix: I don't have anyone to show that combo off to, but it's still reason enough for me to pick it up.

@Dahk: Thanks to the intertubes (and now reruns on BBC America), there are a lot of US buyers who are more than a little excited at the chance to try their hand at getting around Gambon without losing it. I may not be The Stig, but now I can live the dream on my PS3.

The New Zealand guy said it was 1 million in HIS territory. So if you believe Sony that means with the rest of the territories that makes it close to two million.
