Much more interested in the Karen Traviss Trilogy, which is kind of like a sequel instead of a prequel to the Halo trilogy.
Besides, Karen Travis has made some amazing novels of Star Wars and goddamn, Gears of War! Greg might have the cred of a "prize winner", but Karen is better at handling these universes.

Halo Evolutions is a 500 odd page short story anthology, and not the worst place to start. One or two stories are pretty ropey, but it's mostly good.

I regret reading the first one in that trilogy, it seemed incoherently written and was rather boring.
Of all the authors to contribute to the Halo novels I'd easily say Eric Nylund is my favourite. His Mortal Coils series is easily among my favourite books and definitely at the top of the mythic fantasy books I've read.

I have yet to read any of Greg Bear's Halo novels, but given that it might add to the experience of Halo 4, i'm game if they are any good.
How do they fair?
Likewise i'm a massive fan of ODST and it might well be my favourite Halo game in the series, but i've heard nothing but bad things about Traviss and her take. :/
I did enjoy Nylund's novels a fair bit though, especially the first.
As a slight aside, if any Dead Space fans have yet to read Dead Space: Martyr by Brian Evenson i'd recommend it wholeheartedly - a fabulously scary novel that adds so much to the mythos. I'm made up that Evenson is releasing a second Dead Space novel towards the end of the year.

While the novels haven't been amazing since Nylund's ghosts of onyx, it's worth reading Bear's for the batshit crazy stuff of the past and Traviss' for the ongoing struggles of blue team. If Karen didn't have S-2s in her books, i wouldn't read them.
Hopefully Halo 4 won't retcon the shit outta the story like reach did.
