Greenberg: We're joint winners with Nintendo! photo

Children are like miniature communists. If you have something, they want it too. Especially in a competition, where kids are told that there is no such thing as losing, and everybody's a winner. While this is blatantly not true, Microsoft is acting like a 5-year-old who didn't win a race, claiming it's still the victor  ... along with Nintendo, that is.

"We think that we’re one of those industries that consumers are staying in for entertainment," claims Microsoft man Aaron Greenberg. "‘We’, by the way – that’s us and Nintendo. Both the Wii and the Xbox 360 are really the two big winners. Actually, the only two winners right now if you look at holiday sales year over year."

Of course, what that actually means is that Nintendo won, but Microsoft is picking on Sony because if you try and downplay Nintendo's success at this rate, you look like a moron. Bunnyhopping on Nintendo's back and trying to touch the winner's trophy might be obvious, but it's the best MS can do. Of course, Greenberg had other things to say as well, since he so often does.

"We never had a Resident Evil game so we wanted to have that," claims Greenberg, making sure to press the attack on Sony like a Hunter would a straggling Survivor. "We never had Grand Theft Auto day-and-date. We didn’t have Final Fantasy. So we’ve added all the biggest franchises, such as Tekken. These are franchises that were frankly, built on the PlayStation platform. Making sure that we have all those games on our system is important."

Microsoft is doing quite well in marking the Xbox 360 as the PS2 of this generation, and in many ways, the platform holder is right. It has a large and varied library of games, it has shoddy hardware, it appeals to a loyal gamer demographic. The only difference between the Xbox 360 and the PS2 however, is clear -- last gen, the PS2 was the winner.

Resident Evil, GTA, and Final Fantasy aren't Sony franchises.

Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, Resistance, Gran Turismo, Ico, and God of War are. Ugh. Tekken I guess is though, but more or less is an arcade game before console game though.

Anyway, what's up with MS? Aren't they satisfied? You can't win 'em all. They do well enough in Xbox and DESTROY Apple as far computer/OS sales go.

Yes but, how do we define THE winner ? Hardware sales ? Software sales ? Is virtual download taken into account ? Do we look into the average use time of softwares ? What about the Gamecube, XBox, PS2 softwares sales ? The enjoyment of system ?

"___ is the winner" is something that is thrown around a lot without really knowing what it means.

Yeah, apparently final fantasy didn't exist before the Playstation.

Nintendo definitely is bringing tons of non gamers into the fold and that is helping its sales a lot. Microsoft may be doing the same, though on a smaller level. Case in point - my father in law starting getting into WWII shooters a few years back. He got COD5 on launch day for the PC, but it wouldn't run on the ancient hardware he had. So after a bit of research, he decided that instead of buying a new computer and having to deal with periodic upgrades, he would buy a 360. So there he is, almost 60, sitting on his couch after work killing Nazis with a grin on his face. A new console gamer is born. It may not be a widespread occurrence, but I'm willing to bet it isn't rare either.

Doesn't Greenberg realize this will just cause Sony to issue a statement talking about how amazing the PS3 is and the 360/Wii only appeals to subhuman morlocks, creating a never-ending cycle of PR babble that will most likely lead directly to the ice caps melting and proving that Waterworld was indeed a chilling glimpse into the future? Everytime I'm forced to drink my own recycled urine, I'll be silently cursing your name Aaron Greenberg.

I've been playing Persona 4 for the past three weeks almost non-stop. In my little mind, the PS2 is STILL the winner. :3

I blame that whole Wii360 thing people started to pick on Sony way back when.

I was happily rocking the Wii60 for almost two years. After my 360 RROD'd for the second time and MS support told me it'd be 8-12 weeks before I got my 360 back I jumped ship. Now I'm somewhat happily rocking the PSWii. I really like the PS3, but I still miss my 360. Someday the rotten state I live in (Michigan) will cough a job for me and I will buy another 360. Of course by then there will be a new batch of systems to buy and the vicious circle will start anew.

I like how people are either PSWii or Wii60, but you don't see PS360 supporters.

Wii is required to be a real gamer.

i had the first resident evil on the saturn, same with tomb raider.

i fuckng hate corporate microsoft. they just can't shut the fuck up. is nintendo prancing aroud with glee and joy? no! and they have the fucking right to. until microsoft is the true godam winner, they'll just be second, this race isn't over for a few more years and the wii is too high to catch but when sony starts to push the panic button, expect to see the dirty fight really unfold.

this year microsoft hasn't announced anything nearly as well or diverse as the ps3 line-up. i can see a price drop before summer.

No the bit that makes them the 'real gamer' is the PS3 or 360. Wii is what is required to be a douche.

Real gamer, casual gamer, who cares?

And I disagree about having to own a Wii, I just don't feel it has anything going for it outside of a tiny handful of good games and the horizon looks bleak.

Fun times. I think the guy was joking about having to own a Wii, too.

I like to play my games with my feet propped up. I couldn't do that with the wii. The wii is a phenomenon to be sure, but it wasn't for me. I like graphics, and in-depth gameplay. Waggle was fun during christmas but nothing beats a Fallout quest or a COD session with friends. And I don't have to close the curtains to play golf.

We define the winner the same way we have for all previous generations. The console that sell the most systems wins.

I have a 360 and PS3 and I'm going to buy Resident Evil 5, Tekken 6 and Final Fantasy XIII for PS3, but I sure as hell enjoy Gears of War 2 and Left 4 Dead.

There's no room for Wii in my life.

I haven't purchased a console since the Gamecube, and have recently opted for a 360, and am now right back amongst things. To me it appealed because the level of graphical advancement has reached a stage where it feels like i`m getting top notch arcade action in my home, finally. And most of the major games are cross platform anyway. Plus I get the downloadable content (Braid, Castle Crashers etc.), and retro treats, which was half the reason I was considering a Wii (for the VC). I`m late getting amongst it all, for sure, but the Wii is mostly a novelty and hasn't got enough good games, and the PS3 is in a similar boat, albeit with more potential for the future. Plus the PS3 was just way too expensive. If your on a budget, your gonna choose the 360 every time, if your a serious gamer, so im sure there`s many more like me. Still want a Wii though (and a PS3 obviously), if only for that Muramasa game....

Hopefully, there isn't going to be a 'next generation' for a while yet, and developers can really master these current systems. I think we are a year or two into a new golden age for video games, that will last at least another 3 - 4 years (knocks the table).......

I have a PS3 and 360...love em both...

And every day I cry cause the Wii doesn't appeal to me I'm waiting for a real Nintendo console...
That and for Nintendo to stop being lazy cause everytime they mention they listen to hardcore gamers they mention mario and Zelda...

How about growing some balls and launch some new noncasual IP on a yearly basis I think thats the issue...
They have gone stale the only new things they come up with start with Wii.....

IMHO the Wii isn't winning anything I don't get enjoyment if the consoles I own sell well..
I get enjoyment If there are games I wanna play on it...

Ninja out...sorry I sound a little anry I know but Nintendo used to mean something for me the name was magical in my eyes...

I'm with mistic. I own all 3 of them so I'm not choosing side. Each has its pluses and minuses.

And those who say that a particular console is required to be a {negative term, like "douche"} need to look in a mirror. Anyone who feels the need to bash a specific box of electronic circuitry just because of their own intoleance and ignorance is in no position to be calling someone else a {negative term, like "douche"}.

I'm a 360 owner and I'm glad all these titles are available for me to play since I used to love the PS2. But boy it's a bit dirty of Microsoft to take all the PS3's exclusives. Most of the games I want are those Microsoft made sure to grab from Sony. haha
