Greenberg: Modern Warfare 2 sold more than NPD's 4.2m photo

The NPD declared the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 the top seller of November, with a huge number of copies sold. Try 4.2 million copies on for size. That's over twice as much as the PS3 version sold.

While chatting last night with Microsoft's Director of Product Management, Aaron Greenberg, he pointed out that the total number of copies is actually quite a bit higher than the NPD's numbers.

"That's not counting the number of bundles sold last month," Greenberg reminds us, referring to the $399 Xbox 360 Modern Warfare 2 Limited Edition bundle, which features a themed 250GB Xbox 360 and a copy of the game.

When I asked about much more more these bundles would add to the total, he couldn't give specifics, but said that it would add "hundreds of thousands more" to the 4.2 million the NPD counted. All I could think about is how all 4.2 million plus could probably beat me online.

For those counting, in all, across all platforms, that's over 6 million copies of Modern Warfare 2 sold in one month. Damn.

How is the bundle adding hundreds of thousands more? Isn't it supposed to be super limited edition? And a lot of people round here just traded in the standard edition that came with the console to get the Prestige edition.

IW better not had dun lied to me about that. I thought I had a true collectors item.

Major Nelson said so.

My friends and I speculated on just what the number would be. I estimated around 7-8 million, personally. It just seemed like the word of mouth hype for this game reached a level of intensity rarely seen in this medium.

Glad to see IW did well, though. PC issues and all.
