Greenberg: Kinect will sell 3 million units this Xmas photo

Microsoft minister of propaganda Aaron Greenberg has high hopes for Kinect, and why wouldn't he with all the advertising money being pumped into it? The executive in charge of corporate demagoguery has declared that Kinect will sell over three million units this Christmas.

“Our key indicators are feedback from retailers -- I think you’d be surprised at how sophisticated they are, and they really have the pulse of the market. They’re looking at preorders, they’re talking to customers,” says Greenberg. "Our estimates that we will sell in excess of 3 million units this holiday."

Greenberg also says that his company is spending "hundreds of millions of dollars" in marketing, with a budget that exceeds that of the original Xbox 360 launch. Of course, Justin "face like a monkey/fish crossbreed" Bieber isn't cheap.

Are you planning on jumping around your house like a fool in front of the TV this Christmas?

Kinect will sell three million units this Christmas, says Greenberg [VG247]

There's demagoguery and then there's bullshit. 3 million is an insult to everyone's intelligence. Throwing that sort of number around just makes you look like a dick and smell desperate.

I'm not interested. Ever since that Playstation Eye thing came out years ago, I've been completely uninterested in motion-sensing games. The time I most enjoy games is when I'm in my recliner, sipping coffee, and grinding hopelessly in an RPG for hours on end...not flopping my ass around my house.

I like motion controls, I think they will sell, but I wouldn't go as far as saying Kinect (or Move) will sell 3 mil units this holiday. That's just fucking crazy.

Just sayin'...

@ Bakewell - check out your history - Microsoft are past masters in spreading FUD about all their competitors. Just because this monkey isn't screeching right now doesn't mean he won't in the future.

I agree with this. Kinect could sell 3 million units to retailers by christmas. If they sell that amount to customers by christmas, I'll be very surprised.

Greenberg better be careful or he'll fall off that pedestal Microsoft is building for him. Seriously, 3 MILLION?! Yeah... okay. I'm sure every gamer is lining up to purchase this. *rolls eyes*

If he honestly thinks Kinect will do as well as the Wii then he's sadly mistaken. The Wii is cheap, affordable, and family-friendly. Xbox 360 and Kinect are much more expensive and less marketable (a 4GB Xbox 360 Kinect bundle *without* being able to change the hard drive? Are they joking? I can see Kinect sell a decent amount but not even close to what he's predicting, probably not even half.

It's sad to see Microsoft fall like this.

I'm sorry but thinking either kinect or move will go pass a million is wishful thinking. As much as I liked what I've seen of move, I'm waiting to see how it pans out as there's still room for things to go wrong, and kinect just hasn't been impressive at all.

This is probably just PR though, but if honestly belives it .......well.

I do t know. It might not be far off. Look at November and December console salesin past years. There will probably be a lot sold that are bundled with the system. Combine that with any sold separately and he might not be far off. I think 2-2.5 would be a better estimate, but remember it's his job to hype it as much as possible.

No. But I'm listening now at least. With Grasshopper, Steel Battalion & Project Draco games announced as well as the already stated compatibility with Child of Eden... I'll be paying attention to info regarding Kinect now. I had no intention of ever buying it. Microsoft is sneaky getting these guys on board!

I find it amusing how there's mostly hate for Kinect in here right now.

Gotta say project Natal was quite interesting to me, but as they stripped away features and functions to create this cheaper but still expensive Natal product I lost all interest.

Getting Move tomorrow! Whooooo!

It's all about the software, and so far MS is failing pretty hard in that department, it's like the metaphorical tables have done a full 180.

@sexualchocolate. Sorry man I have to disagree. Dance central looks great and if steel battalion works well there really is no telling how far they could take it. Both look much better than the game I played on move... Who thought a guy on an office chair rolling down a hill fighting yakuza would be a decent selling game? ( yes I know that's prob the worst game they have out there but it's what the Sony rep would let me play)

Until they make several games I want to actually use a kinect for no. Since they seem mostly interested in making dancing games and minigame collections I don't see that ever happening. I am sure they will make 3 million to retails though simply bc retailers will stock it under the assumption that it is going to be as big as Wii was but I doubt 3 million consumers will buy it by Christmas.

He's probably right. I can see Kinect selling around that many by the end of the year, but don't expect for it to get to 5 million units sold, until like mid 2011. I just can't see it being a big seller outside of the holiday launch period. First off, all the games they announced at TGS, probably won't be out for awhile now, so the launch software will only go so far and lets face it, the launch line-up is not looking all that stellar!

So, if less than 10% of 360 owners buy it this holiday, it'll sell that. If they sell 500K to new customers it makes the feat all the more feasible. Although I am not as interested as I once was... I still know alot of gamers who are. I don't think this estimate is too hard to imagine. If they actually had some nice hardcore titles that support it, I would pick it up. I think it would be a great addition to the Xbox Live experience.

How can it, in your words, suck? The Move has been getting rave responses from the gamers and the gaming blog community. Even in Destructoid, the praise the Move and unfortunately, ridicule the Kinect. So which is the better motion control scheme? I think the gamers can tell.

@Kai Zakath: I don't know how people want to play their Steel Battalion but at least I want my Steel Battalion with controller that requires another table to operate on and has around 40 buttons.

For me, and I guess for a lot of people, Dance Central is the only interesting thing as it stand now.

@ Romo Metaxxas

The market these gadgets are aimed at don't give a damn about the motion control scheme or the quality of said motion control; lets be honest - it's aimed at the very casual audience - the kind of people hat bought a Wii for Wii fit.

I honestly don't think they'll do very well; and hope they fail miserably, after all the crap Microsoft and Sony threw at the Wii the very fact they're trying their hardest to copy that success [very literally in Sony's case] proves how wrong they were - the only reason there's any hype at all behind either motion control scheme is nearly entirely company made from all the press statements they make. I've not seen anyone [bar the odd comment on here] really state they are really looking forward to the Move or Kinect...

Why would you buy Move to get a different control scheme for games that work fine with a controller [Socom, Heavy Rain, Killzone 3]? Why buy Kinect to jump around like an idiot?

The only viable motion control system is the Wii because every game on the system has been designed with the motion control in mind and thus will continue to have the motion control support for all game. That and it has Super Mario Galazy 2, which, by your standards [you know, the whole "critics opinions are correct when they suit me" thing] is the best game to use motion controls.

Of course he did; he's a fanboy, his brain filters out any information he doesn't agree with it.

I have a hunch Kinect is going to sell WAY better than we anticipated, but it's not going to be bought by hardcore gamers. I think it's going to outsell the Move to people like my mom, but I think the hardcore gamers are going to get Move (and therefore it won't move as many units).

That's just my opinion. I am getting neither because I hate motion controls, and both cost almost as much as a Wii, so if I wanted to waggle something I'd just get that (and finally have all three systems).
