Quantcast

During the course of this week's episode of Sessler's Soapbox, the ever suave, yet somewhat neurotic G4 host takes on the controversial subject of release dates for popular games -- and their star killing properties. He may be much calmer than usual, but that doesn't seem to hinder his ability to navigate through the BS that (some people would like us to believe for an instant) pushing back Grand Theft Auto IV by a week will save Hollywood from the embarrassment of having the game deep-six the debut of Iron Man at the box office.

So what exactly is the logic behind this lapse of judgment? Well, according to "someone," history has proven this sentiment to be a universal law of nature already. As amazing as it sounds, Halo 3's release date might have been solely responsible for defeating the powerhouse that should've been The Heartbreak Kid. Yes, it saddens me as well to know that in the processing of "finishing the fight against the fictional Covenant," Master Chief unknowingly destroyed the lives of real innocents. War is indeed Hell, and collateral damage is a bitch. My bleeding heart goes out to Ben Stiller and the crew. They never had a chance. As for the fate of the alcohol-infested tin can? Something tells me that he's not even going to be aware of the GTA onslaught.

I find it hard to believe people who played Halo constantly would want to go see The Heartbreak Kid to begin with. but hey. that's just me.

as for Iron Man....yea. come on, GTAIV won't stop marvel/iron man nuts from taking a few hours out of a day of playing GTAIV to go see what I hope to be an awesome movie.

I totally agree about what he says with Halo 3 and Heartbreak Kid. It's obvious that kids that play Halo 3 do not want to go out and see a movie like Heartbreak Kid.

But for this, it's freaking Iron Man. It's a Marvel movie about an awesome superhero. I think that GTA IV would have somewhat to blame because I think a lot more people that would play GTA IV would want to go see the latest Marvel Superhero Movie. Hell, I do...but I'm going to be busy playing GTA IV.

Iron Man looks awesome. Heartbreak kid looked like another POS ben stiller movie.

Iron Man has nothing to worry about.

Heartbreak kid was a lousy movie anyway. I don't think that turd bombing had anything to do with Halo3.

I'm going to play anal-cyst, and make my prediction:

Both Iron Man and GTA IV will coexist in peace, and go on to make millions for each party.

I totally agree with Adam on this one. Personally, I plan to purchase both GTAIV on its release and see Iron Man on its Opening, since I'm a huge fan of both franchises.

Now excuse me, I have the sudden urge to play CoD4 for some odd reason...

The heartbreak kid was a piece of shit. Every movie with ben stiller in it will never be as good as "theres something about mary" and he needs to stop trying.

He's not that bad.

Oh yeah, Dodgeball was great =D

Btw, could the movies not be making MORE money from a game being released at the same time because everyone is down at the shopping center to pick up the game and goes "hey look Iron Man, lets go see that". Seems like it could work both ways.

Dodgebaw was awesome. But come on, movies in the theaters are dying as we know it just cause prices are way too much compared to the 90s and people are just too lazy to go out. They may make money, but if it's not a big movie, chances are it's not gonna make those blowout sales that movies used to do.

Who the fuck cares what this asshole has to say, especially after giving crisis core 2 stars.

Sessler gave Crisis Core 2 stars cause Sessler can't review a damn RPG without saying I hate it.

I agree with everything that Gameboi and Sessler said. I think the legions of Iron Man fanboys out there — a group that intersects with GTA fans — will be able to put their controllers down for a few hours to go see the movie.

Also, I will be playing GTA and not seeing Iron Man. But thats because I think Iron Man isn't particularly interesting.

Has anyone else noticed how bad that show is? I will sometimes watch AOTS, but then have to turn xplay. The Crisis Core review was a disaster.

Iron Man is much more of a movie than Heartbreak Kid and hell Iron Man isn't even out yet. Halo 3 or any other game for that matter can't be blamed for the steaming pile of crap they put on the big screen.

So, I gotta agree with Sessler here... but just this once. Can't let him build too much confidence.

GTA IV isn't going to do squat to Iron Man. Most gamers who are interested in GTA IV are also interested in Iron Man. And paying $10 to see a movie isn't much for people who pay $60-80 for games in general. Perhaps they won't watch it on opening weekend, but the movie will get its money. Especially since Iron Man is opening the strong summer series of movies.

Every week of summer except one has a movie I want to go see. This is the first year I can say that. I'll buy my games and see my movies, neither will suffer.

I'm a Ben Stiller fan, but that movie didn't strike me as a box office winner. This is all ludicrous, and Sessler's right about it just being Hollywood looking for scapegoats. Most of their movies suck. Deal with it.

Seriously though, I just dropped $60 on a game and you want me to get a $10 movie ticket too? What am I made of money? Am I sitting under the money tree? Do I have an adequate printer and the right substrate? Methinks not.

I never see movies on opening week anyway. I hate crowds.

I dont think that either of the games (halo 3 or GTA when it comes out) have the power to completley destroy a movie's ratings. Well sure a lot of people will say "Hey wanna go to the movies this weekend?" to thier freinds who will reply "Nah I just picked up Halo 3(or GTA) lets play Coop/deathmatch/ect/whatever multiplayer swappin controllers/ect. at my house instead" but that could'nt possibly add up to the millions of veiwers that didnt/wont go see the movie.
