Following yesterday's big reveal trailer, Rockstar has kindly decided to officially announce Grand Theft Auto V. The studio confirmed that the game will be set primarily in Los Santos and surrounding areas. It appears we'll only get part of San Andreas, not the entire location as we had on the PlayStation 2.
Online multiplayer is set to return after debuting in Grand Theft Auto IV, while the traditional mission-based structure is retained for solo play. Despite the familiar footing, Take-Two calls GTA V a "bold new direction in open-world freedom."
Rockstar's Sam Houser says that GTA V will be a "radical reinvention" and that the dev team is "incredibly excited to share our new vision with our fans."
Pretty exciting stuff, no?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
The multiplayer in 4 was amazing, though, so more of that is welcome.
Los Santos must've had a radical expansion since 92 then. Just give me the customization of my character like in GTA SA, and ill buy this in a heartbeat.
HYYYYPE.
Only game I'll get pumped for with no info Is HL3
What a waste….
Remember, this is what made IV so bland.
I hope deathmatch and shit aren't back in multiplayer. They were pretty useless since it was very poorly executed and awful anyway.
Well first, it's as original as any other GTA city. Liberty City from 3 and IV is New York in style, Vice City is Miami, San Fierro is San Francisco, Los Venturas is Las Vegas and Los Santos from SA and V is Las Angeles.
And 2nd, if the changes of Lib City from 3 to 4 is anything to go by, Los Santos will look nothing like the SA version in either layout or scale.
And 3rd, of course we're getting a full city. I believe you mean state?
I'd rather a well done, detailed city with lots of content (and forest, wilderness areas around it) than have 3 much smaller cities with the content spread out instead.
Vice City is still my favourite by a long way. Due to having a great atmosphere and characters.
If no to two out of three, then I'm not interested.
this is some half assed bullshit...
Seriously, how many people didn't know about putting your phone status to busy, and never having to deal with that? fuck sakes, RTFM people.
If there is a return of planes (and enough space and places to fly over and to), real estate, character customization, car customization, bicycles & all types of motorcycles, and non-mission related campaigns like turf wars, breaking and entering into house at night, and a dozen mini games, THEN we'll have as much as San Andreas had.
I don't really care if we get all of those specifically, I just want there to be as much stuff total to do by myself in the game. Once that foundation is lain, build co-op and multiplayer modes on top of it.
that fact alone proves that it was retarded idea. GTA4 already at launch was mostly archaic with obscure and dated gameplay and design choices. if they won't move forward and yet again give as same ol bullshit i'm done with Rockstar games. Volition surpassed GTA franchise with Saints Row 2 putting in the game great ideas that made overall gameplay and experience more entertaining - there was no bullshit known from GTA games(loosing everything after death, all BS regarding house and garage etc.).
I can't wait for Rockstar to take the darker tonality of 4 but combine it with enjoyable aspects of the PS2 era games.
I agree. How is this a "bold new direction"? I've yet to see/hear anything different...
Their work on Red Dead and helping to make L.A. Noire...now those were different. I'll pick Saints Row if I want ridiculous open-world experiences from now on, it looks like. And I'm not even that big of a fan of open world games...
As for more pure conjecture, I don't think that the protagonist being Claude is entirely implausible. That guy in the header does look a bit like an older version of him, and he'd provide a neat link to the past, whilst being a blank slate for further development.
All you've SEEN/HEARD is a single trailer that came out yesterday. So yeah. Calm down.
Still, I have high hopes for this game. And by high hopes I mean MOTHA FUCKIN PLANES DAWG! And hey, while they're only focusing on one city and the surrounding area, nobody said anything about how much space it would cover. It could be that we have one city and the countryside sprawling over the same amount of surface area that composed the whole state in San Andreas.
