Grand Theft Auto V: Los Santos, online multiplayer, more! photo

Following yesterday's big reveal trailer, Rockstar has kindly decided to officially announce Grand Theft Auto V. The studio confirmed that the game will be set primarily in Los Santos and surrounding areas. It appears we'll only get part of San Andreas, not the entire location as we had on the PlayStation 2.

Online multiplayer is set to return after debuting in Grand Theft Auto IV, while the traditional mission-based structure is retained for solo play. Despite the familiar footing, Take-Two calls GTA V a "bold new direction in open-world freedom."

Rockstar's Sam Houser says that GTA V will be a "radical reinvention" and that the dev team is "incredibly excited to share our new vision with our fans."

Pretty exciting stuff, no?

As long as I don't have to drive my ronery cousin around, we're good.

Wow. Not only can they not come up with an original city, but we're not even getting the full thing. Weak.

The multiplayer in 4 was amazing, though, so more of that is welcome.

THERE BETTER BE BOWLING.

Los Santos must've had a radical expansion since 92 then. Just give me the customization of my character like in GTA SA, and ill buy this in a heartbeat.

HYYYYPE.

Devastated we don't get the full package... they should have picked a new city, not give us less than half of a revamped classic…
What a waste….

I'd rather have 1 city with a shit load of activities and detail than 3 cities and minimum activities and detail due to the lack of disc space they have to consider.

Remember, this is what made IV so bland.

The trailer or this info has got me excited for this game.

I hope deathmatch and shit aren't back in multiplayer. They were pretty useless since it was very poorly executed and awful anyway.

@KingSigy

Well first, it's as original as any other GTA city. Liberty City from 3 and IV is New York in style, Vice City is Miami, San Fierro is San Francisco, Los Venturas is Las Vegas and Los Santos from SA and V is Las Angeles.

And 2nd, if the changes of Lib City from 3 to 4 is anything to go by, Los Santos will look nothing like the SA version in either layout or scale.

And 3rd, of course we're getting a full city. I believe you mean state?

I'd rather a well done, detailed city with lots of content (and forest, wilderness areas around it) than have 3 much smaller cities with the content spread out instead.

Vice City is still my favourite by a long way. Due to having a great atmosphere and characters.

they better fix the gameplay cause gameplay in GTA4 sucked ass. fix the cover system, broken shooting mechanics and take out the phone/dates completely out of the game. and while you're at it take some cues from Saint's Row - Saint's Row 2 was so much better designed than GTA4 it's not even funny. GTA4 felt like a chore most of the time.

Will the more include playable female characters who can be given huge muscles, orange skin, cat eyes and feline face paint? Customizable vehicles? A rocket pack like in GTA:San Andreas, at the very least?
If no to two out of three, then I'm not interested.

Or how about we wait until Rockstar TELLS us something about the game until we get our panties in the bunch. Also, phone that lets me streamline everything in the game > haphazardly going all over the map. Put apparently ignoring a fucking phone call is too distressing for some gamers. Thankfully Rockstar is the type of company to do whatever the fuck they want without listening to the stupidity of gamer suggestions.

Yeah I'll believe they're innovating when I see it. All they have shown/announced looks completely generic, even if the trailer is well cut/pretty. Male lead in an American city they've done before. Fuck that, how about doing a GTA ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD. A crime game in San Paulo, Nairobi, Bang kok etc would have me immediately interested, why does it have to be this American Dream shit every damned time? That story WAS interesting, the first few times, but it was pretty tired by GTAIV and I sure as shit am not interested in it for the 5th damned time.

@geezy - What? San Andreas had orders of magnitude more to do AND three cities, tons of square miles of landscape to fly over and explore, and a few towns in that rural area. If one city is supposed to be better, GTA4 absolutely disproves that.

If there is a return of planes (and enough space and places to fly over and to), real estate, character customization, car customization, bicycles & all types of motorcycles, and non-mission related campaigns like turf wars, breaking and entering into house at night, and a dozen mini games, THEN we'll have as much as San Andreas had.

I don't really care if we get all of those specifically, I just want there to be as much stuff total to do by myself in the game. Once that foundation is lain, build co-op and multiplayer modes on top of it.

I'm gonna preorder this shit. Fuck yes. I was not so thrilled for GTA IV before or after it's release, but this has me excited from the getgo. Maybe because the setting is more colorful, maybe it's because the story might not be so serious and actually turn out funny. Either way, I'm getting this for PC. I just gotta hope the DRM won't fuck me in the ass.

They're reusing San Andreas? These games are always fun but I still can't believe so many people fell all over themselves praising GTA4as the best thing since sliced bread when really, it was GTA3/Vice City/ SA with a few improvements. They really need to do something to make this fresh. I'd rather see another Red Dead Redemption than the same ol' GTA.

@Lenigod,
that fact alone proves that it was retarded idea. GTA4 already at launch was mostly archaic with obscure and dated gameplay and design choices. if they won't move forward and yet again give as same ol bullshit i'm done with Rockstar games. Volition surpassed GTA franchise with Saints Row 2 putting in the game great ideas that made overall gameplay and experience more entertaining - there was no bullshit known from GTA games(loosing everything after death, all BS regarding house and garage etc.).

I was like many, disappointing in GTAIV but with subsequent episodes and games like RDR they have shown their mettle. If they can bring in the freedom of San Andreas, some of the realism of IV, the joy of exploring the wild of Red Dead then they could make an incredible game. Still sad there is no San Fierro/Los Venturas.

@oot - I can't really see the comparisons of 4 to the previous games... 4 was smaller than SA, yet ended up having only a sliver of the possible activities to do. The only definite improvements were the graphics, the rest would be better defined as different. Different driving controls, different themes and tone of story, different focus.

I can't wait for Rockstar to take the darker tonality of 4 but combine it with enjoyable aspects of the PS2 era games.

I agree. How is this a "bold new direction"? I've yet to see/hear anything different...

Their work on Red Dead and helping to make L.A. Noire...now those were different. I'll pick Saints Row if I want ridiculous open-world experiences from now on, it looks like. And I'm not even that big of a fan of open world games...

I was a tiny bit disappointed when I learned Rockstar were going back to San Andreas so soon (relatively), but this focus on one city along with everything else they've said has gotten me really excited.

As for more pure conjecture, I don't think that the protagonist being Claude is entirely implausible. That guy in the header does look a bit like an older version of him, and he'd provide a neat link to the past, whilst being a blank slate for further development.

Don't worry guys, I'm sure they'll eventually sell us the rest of San Andreas as DLC :/

Still, I have high hopes for this game. And by high hopes I mean MOTHA FUCKIN PLANES DAWG! And hey, while they're only focusing on one city and the surrounding area, nobody said anything about how much space it would cover. It could be that we have one city and the countryside sprawling over the same amount of surface area that composed the whole state in San Andreas.

What a disappointment. San Andreas' biggest selling point was how huge its game world is. Sure, it din't have as much polish as GTA IV, but it was a fun world to explore, even if the only recreational activities outside of missions were murder, driving and murder.

The huge size was in my opinion not the greatest appeal of san andreas but I hope they bring back the nice cheats not the crappy vehicle ones from gta4 but the things like "allcarsgoboom" and other insane cheats. Unlike most games cheats really add something to gta. I also hope The purple dildo and the gimp suit return. Also the Truth and Zero should make a comeback
