Grand Theft Auto III now on iOS photo

Celebrating its tenth anniversary, Grand Theft Auto III is now available on iOS for $4.99. The game that popularized the sandbox craze is regarded as a classic these days, and while later GTA games would replace the silent Claude with increasingly complete protagonists, let's face it, we all love Claude.

More than a straight port, GTA III for iOS has updated graphics, with better looking characters and vehicles as well as a coat of HD paint.

It's amazing to think that a game once considered a huge, ambitious project is now available to download onto a mobile phone as if it's no big deal. It's a shame so many "hardcore" gamers are against iOS, because things like this are breathtaking when you step back and think about it.

I would totally buy a xbla or psn gta3. It's still my favorite out of the bunch. Driving around in a taxi just to hear all of lazlows show, spawning a tank by your firs hide out to grab the racing infernus, flying tanks... so many good memories.

Sure it's amazing, but it's a bit like putting the whole atari 2600 or snes or nes or genesis library onto one device you can connect to the TV or one app you can use on the phone. Once only available in stupid, fairly clunky, damage-prone cartridges, it is now all in the palm of your hand. Very damn cool but also not able to generate as much awe as the original.

Damn, I remember when this game was announced, I was still playign the crap outta Driver 2 on the original playstation, I swear by god, I tought it was all rumors, I mean, kill people, steal cars, get hookers, and all that on 3D graphics? It seemed something out of this world and I was all over it, but unfortunatelly had no money to buy a Playstation 2. And like Jim said, now it's a cellphone game, how cool is that?

The iPhone 4S is a superior gaming system power-wise to the original Nintendo DS. Hopefully we'll see a lot more releases like this!

I have nothing against iPhone/Android games. Problem is... I just don't have a smartphone so I can't download games such as this. Maybe when I finally upgrade, I will.

So, since I can't download this, I will continue bitching until Rockstar finally caves and releases a Grand Theft Auto HD Collection on the PS3 and 360. I know that collection would sell upwards of 2 million. It's like Rockstar's property is sitting on an oil field and they don't release they can make money by *selling* it.

ive tried to go back and start a new game of gta3 on my ps2. man is it tough to play. so many use full features missing. jumping from cars etc. aiming. also one thing i missed form VC and SA , dont recall if it was in gta4, but the top down camera view like in gta 1&2. it was hard to play like that, but it was mad cool to mess with.

but i cant see this being fun to play with a touch screen.

I'll have to wait for the review. I'm pretty selective about spending more than $0.99 on iOS games because I generally don't play them enough to get my money's worth. I wish more iOS games had demos/trials.

Of course, if this was Vice City, I'd be downloading it right now, regardless of the price.

What I really don't get here is why iOS and not a proper HD update for PS3 and 360 instead.

I like iOS games when they're built for iOS, GTAIII is not that game. Even if it can run it, its not going to be as playable as a console or even the PSP versions.

^^ Actual conversation I had with my mates as we took turns playing GTA2.

Oh how far our favourite entertainmnet media has come.

I personally think we should wait and see if GTA3's iOS version has any major technical issues or if it controls in any way shape or form like a tolerable game before proclaiming it as justification for the platform.

While I appreciate the cause, I think people are jumping the gun by claiming iOS is a legit platform.

Oh how little you know. The only type of "damage" these things do, would be if you use it as a weapon.

However, Venture Towns which is Kairosoft's (the guys who made Game Dev Story) latest game is also out today and is excellent. Sonic CD is also out, which I bought and instantly regretted. Damn touch screen joypad.

Yay, found it on the web Android market but not the app -wierd.

Got it anyway. Can't turn down classic GTA for the £3 or whatever they wanted for it.

Looking forward to checking out just how bad the controls are, and also to finally rooting my phone and connecting a PS3 controller - not for GTA - for Onlive.... Wonder if it'll work with GTA though??

GTA3 controlled like arse even on the superior PC version, I won't be playing that game again. I can't imagine how it will fare on the iOS...

Still GTA has a lot of casual appeal so it seems to be a good business choice at least.

Take a long look at yourself before calling others out won't ya Mr. 'Simon Says' Sterling?

Purchased this immediately when I found our it works with Xperia Play's gamepad. The gamepad is definitely superior to on screen controls, but u tried the touchscreen layout, and it works surprisingly well.

The controls are tolerable for anyone who wants to play this game.

Jakysan: that's a good idea, but I'm pretty sure the iOS version has updated graphics, some tweaks, and added features, like Mission retry and Autosaving.

I would just think a 10th anniversary edition on console would be a no brainer.

@free touch - the resolution increase is nice, but it's still on a tiny ass screen. The physical controls alone make the console (and Xperia Play) versions superior.

I don't know why these haven't received XBLA and PSN releases yet, though. I have the physical copies, but it might be nice to have them on the hard drive too.

I don't hate the iOS or the IDEA of gaming on my phone. I DO hate the lack of comfort and actual tactile buttons.
I also hate the idea of having everything tied to just one battery, so playing a game causes me to run out of a charge for my phone/email/etc.

I had an Ipod touch and while I had all the top games, it really sucked using the touch screen controls.

Touch screen controls dont inherently suck, it's how they're implemented that matters. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. GTA 3 touch screen controls are pretty good, as far a I can tell.

I'm not against iOS I'm just not keen on the price of getting things that run it. Its not like people are just giving me things that are that expensive, even for a gift giving holiday.

I'm also not so keen on the idea of complete touch controlling. So many people claim that its a nightmare for most games that the idea turns me off to it. Like, take this game for example. How does driving around feel? I remember one of the hardest things about this game were some of the timed driving missions towards the end of the game, if the controls for driving aren't good then people won't be finishing the game -and thats kind of a waste, no matter how great the rest of the game turns out to be or how cheap they sell it for.

Add the same train of thought to any number of things about a game like that from killing people to making sure your even walking in the right direction and controls end up making up -at least- 90% of peoples issues with the game. So that's kind of the biggest reason I haven't jumped to doing some iOS gaming.. well other then money being the real biggest issue.

I bought it for my Asus Transformer, and since I can use a Ps3 controller with it,its like a really cheap Psn rerelease, that being said,I feel that gameplay wise, the game doesn't hold up too well compared to later GTA's,specially San Andreas.
Still,$5 is a steal for this game.
