Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars hits iPhone App Store photo

As promised, Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is now available on the App Store for iPhone and iPod touch. It's only $9.99, which might make it one of the best values on the platform.

Yes, this is the same game that was released last year for the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation Portable, a full, open-world GTA title featuring hours of gameplay. Good gameplay, too, if our review is any indication. Oh, and all of the other reviews, too.

I haven't had a chance to play the game on the iPhone yet. It could be that the lack of physical controls totally "breaks" the game. While the DS version did feature plenty of touch-based mechanics, most of the action was done with the d-pad and buttons, which the iPhone lacks. But did I mention it's only $9.99?

It could work.

I've yet to play an action oriented iPhone game that works. It's a great platform for adventure or certain puzzle games. But GTA doesn't seem like a good fit.

@Onc
Mega Man 2 works GREAT with its responsive on screen joystiq/keys.

10 bucks is quite a bit for a iGame, so I think I will read reviews on how it plays first. I generally do not like the controls on action games for my iTouch.

$10 is a great price for a $30 DS/PSP game, but I would avoid this, especially if you can get the PSP or DS version. I doubt the controls are very responsive, it probably takes up a lot of HD space, and it's definitely a battery-drinker.

Still, it's cool that they can make the game work on iPhones, efficient or not.

What is the motivation to purchase an iPhone, let alone iPhone games?

I'd much rather use my DS or PSP than a device with half the battery life of either, that also requires full touch screen control.

@Panda - I always have my iPhone and ALL of my games for it; no cards or UMDs stuffed into pockets, it's also a 3g enabled web browser an email platform. If you don't get it, I can't explain it to you.

This really pisses me off. The iPhone gets the exact same game that the PSP or DS gets, but at $20-30 less.

Beaterator - $40 for PSP. $6 for iPhone.

Civ:Revolution - $35 for DS, $6-7 for iPhone.

Also some of EA's titles, like Scrabble - $5 or so on iPhone, $20 on PSP.

And then publishers whine that games don't sell on the PSP. Well, yeah, for $25+ more, of course they don't.

i just got this a few hours ago and while i've never played the psp or ds version, i gotta say this is a pretty decent version. the virtual joystick is the same as all the other iphone games, so if you typically have a problem with it you should avoid this. I've had no problem, however, and the action keys are placed pretty well.

in the end, i'm just floored that my goddamn cell phone is playing grand theft auto. IT'S THE FUTURE

I think we need to bring more ideas for this purpose. Involvement of young people can be handy in this regard. I am happy to find a good post here. Thank you
