Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars HD hits iPad next week photo

In an effort to make sure it's playable on every portable platform known to man, Rockstar has announced that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars HD is coming to the iPad next week. It'll be available on September 9, and will cost $9.99 on the Apple App Store.

What makes it any different than Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the iPhone? Well, it's in "high definition." That's why it's called Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars HD, dummy. Otherwise, it sounds like it's the same game, with 50 missions, drug peddling, fast driving, and loud shootouts. Chinatown Wars on the iPhone wasn't the easiest thing to play with its touch controls, but go ahead and spend $10 to find out if it's any easier on the bigger iPad screen.

We reviewed Chinatown Wars when it came out on the Nintendo DS, which was a huge deal, and it was good. Because everyone was like, "Hey, the Nintendo DS is finally getting some love from Rockstar." Then Rockstar realized it needed to make some money and released it on everything ever to recoup some of its development costs.

What platform hasn't Chinatown Wars been release on that you'd like to see it make an appearance on?

I actually think the iPhone version controls pretty well. No substitute for buttons, of course, but not detrimental to the overall experience.

I forgot I owned this game on DS actually. I don't know what that says about the game though....

It was an ok game, but that header image reminded me of something Yahtzee said about the game: there's only one female character in the whole game, who's only in the game for about 2 minutes, and the only reason she's in the game at all is so they could have a woman in ads for the game.

Then when it was released in psp, surprise, it perfomed worse than the DS version. I don't know how it performed in iphone/ipod touch, and now that it covers Ipad the only options that are still untouched are psn, xbox live and wii.

@kylehyde.. it actually did quite well on the app store.. difference is though that it was 10 bucks.. not 30 - 40.. so yeah, no surprise there..

The iPhone version was the best version (not my opinion, but facts) because:
a) it was in widescreen
b) it performed better then the slow and shitty PSP one
c) more portable than both of those versions
d) cheaper

I agree with a 3DS port of Chinatown Wars. With the added missions and improved graphics of the PSP version, coupled with 3D capabilities(Duh) and hopefully released around 3DS' launch, this could bode quite well for Rockstar if they market it right.

How about a new game? I hate ports and remakes and etc. Leave sleeping dogs alone.

Funny, I just bought this for the DS today to prepare for flights and PAX.

I don't like the non-cel-shaded graphics of the PSP version. If this theoretical 3DS port is cel-shaded, then I'll be a happy panda.

Agreed with Hubert. Let's get this on XBLA if they're good selling it for $10.
