Lips flap a lot at E3. After all everyone is there to make a splash. Remember when Dan Greenawalt, Forza 3's creative director, mentioned once or twice that Forza 3 was going to be the definitive racing game of this generation? He might have dropped that phrase a few times here and there. Clearly his incessant claim was meant to be a subtle swipe at Gran Turismo, but Greenwalt doesn't play subtle. According to him Gran Turismo has not been living up to what it should be.
During E3 Greenwalt let the jab out while showing off some of Forza 3's new features like the rewind option. After discussing how Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi influenced him greatly in becoming passionate about cars Greenwalt went on to say that Gran Turismo had "dropped the ball," but that Forza 3 was here to "pick it up." Boom! Greenwalt steps it up.
We've all seen the stunning trailer for Froza 3, but who thinks it's really going to replace the epic realism of Gran Turismo. If you ask me they're both great racing games, but Forza is geared far more towards the arcade/real racer while Gran Turismo is gearted towards solely the real racer. I mean look at the car flipping in the Forza trailer, I don't think Gran Turismo was ever about doing stuff like that.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
and that is EXACTLY why forza is better! how can you be the "super real racer game" when gran turismo had no damage? wtf is that? that is the most basic element you should include in a racing game.. especially one that's trying to be a supersim.
I mean, yes, the graphics are incredible. But basing the ENTIRE FRIGGING GAME around them is just stupid.
That's why I've had more enjoyment out of Froza 2 than any of the Gran Turismo games, if just from the paintshop alone.
Froza 3 FTW!
Will this be satisfactory to people nursed on Burnout and presumably Forza (never played it)? Not sure. Properly raced cars just don't smash up the way they do in those games on a regular basis, but certainly we will see SOME kind of deformation.
Unless you spent all your money on cars and only have one console :P
Ehhh, more like, if you want a semi-realistic arcade racer, get Project Gotham 4. Forza is a simulation racing game, just like gran turismo is. I'm sorry if that sets your fanboi rage off, but it's true. Gran Turismo may have better physics or whatever, but that doesn't disqualify every other simulation racer out there.
"I think all the big car buffs who have both systems will just.... get both?"
BINGO! Both games are very similar and have good things to offer. I don't see why these comment threads can't be full of car talk instead of fanboi nonsense. I guess I'll start. While not the fastest, the e30 M3 is the best track car ever made. Discuss.
Though I am totally psyched for Forza 3 and don't have a PS3, so the choice is pretty clear on my end...
I'm not saying that the Forza series is the end all be all of console racing, but they are trying.
What the hell is Froza 3? :p
Beyond GT, the japanese have a lot to learn about driving games.
However, Forza, while many may slate it, filled a gap that GT left wide open. Forza 2 is out now and can be piced up dirt cheap. Forza 3 will more than likely arrive before GT turns up on PS3.
In truth, the western devs own the drivng game genre now. From simpler fun fare of Burnout, to the more comple stylings of Dirt, Grid etc. I hope the Polyphony team took notes at E3, because that was always their main failing, ignoring the potential competition.
I used to LOVE the GT series, I owned all 4 and even bought GT5 Prologue. But I got tired of waiting for GT5 to finally release, so I got recently got an Xbox 360 and Forza 2. Although it has some issues in areas (eg no qualifying? WTF?), there is no doubt that Forza 2 has a much more relaistic driving model than any GT game so far released.
Do this quick comparison:
In Forza 2, turn off all the assists, accelerate to a high speed, slam on the brakes, and turn the wheel. You'll hear a realistic screeching sound from the tires, and the car simply will not turn as it slides with tires lockes up.
Do the same in GT5P, or in GT4, try to hear the weak screeching sound, and see your car start to make the corner (albeit understeering).
How can you call GT the most realistic when you can't even lock up your tires?
