Gran Turismo has let us down, but Forza 3 is here to help photo

Lips flap a lot at E3. After all everyone is there to make a splash. Remember when Dan Greenawalt, Forza 3's creative director, mentioned once or twice that Forza 3 was going to be the definitive racing game of this generation? He might have dropped that phrase a few times here and there. Clearly his incessant claim was meant to be a subtle swipe at Gran Turismo, but Greenwalt doesn't play subtle. According to him Gran Turismo has not been living up to what it should be.

During E3 Greenwalt let the jab out while showing off some of Forza 3's new features like the rewind option. After discussing how Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi influenced him greatly in becoming passionate about cars Greenwalt went on to say that Gran Turismo had "dropped the ball," but that Forza 3 was here to "pick it up." Boom! Greenwalt steps it up.

We've all seen the stunning trailer for Froza 3, but who thinks it's really going to replace the epic realism of Gran Turismo. If you ask me they're both great racing games, but Forza is geared far more towards the arcade/real racer while Gran Turismo is gearted towards solely the real racer. I mean look at the car flipping in the Forza trailer, I don't think Gran Turismo was ever about doing stuff like that.

"I mean look at the car flipping in the Forza trailer, I don't think Gran Turismo was ever about doing stuff like that. "

and that is EXACTLY why forza is better! how can you be the "super real racer game" when gran turismo had no damage? wtf is that? that is the most basic element you should include in a racing game.. especially one that's trying to be a supersim.

The thing is that cars do flip over realistically.

Also, Froza 3, lol.

Gran Turismo became old as soon as it became the same damn thing as the first one with prettier graphics.
I mean, yes, the graphics are incredible. But basing the ENTIRE FRIGGING GAME around them is just stupid.
That's why I've had more enjoyment out of Froza 2 than any of the Gran Turismo games, if just from the paintshop alone.

I guess it all comes down to whether you want a driving simulator or a crashing simulator.

jesus christ, for all the cross analysis of these two, about everyone didn't see that the e3 gt5 trailer has fucking damage in it. watch it and you'll see. forza don't even come close to the gt series. the forza team even tried bribing people to vote for their game over gran turismo and they still lost. gran turismo is the greatest, most realistic, in depth racer around and now they have nascar, what does forza have? do they have nascar, rally and indy class racing? but they do have a rewind feature, wait, wtf does that have to do with racing? making cool videos does not mean it wins and is not a feature that should even be mentioned.

GT5 was ok (I bought demo version) but I like pimping my ride out and racing through traffic so both these titles don't interest me.

Froza 3 FTW!

Gran Turismo is a series very near and dear to my heart, but I'm glad the Forza guys are doing some really cool things with 3 and am looking forward to playing it in the downtime until GT5 is released. That said, the GT series has always felt more grounded in reality than any of the Forzas, and having watched the E3 trailers for both over, and over, and over, and over again, I think GT5 will have the upper-hand in looks at the very least. Forza 3 very well may end up having a more enjoyable game built around their nice looking tech, but the lighting, environments, and car models in GT5 are incredible and anything they do with damage modeling I trust will be spot on. While Forza's car models are beautiful, the environments are kinda janky in both geometry and textures and the lighting goes out of its way to artificially make the cars look too shiny.

While everyone's whining about damage modeling, I hear GT5 will have it, finally.

Will this be satisfactory to people nursed on Burnout and presumably Forza (never played it)? Not sure. Properly raced cars just don't smash up the way they do in those games on a regular basis, but certainly we will see SOME kind of deformation.

Kazunori Yamauchi is the father of modern racing games, and seeing as polophony spends 5 years devolping each game I think its a little ridiculous to say they have dropped the ball considering they havent released a true sequel yet. To me this just seems like them trying to get more people to buy forza 3.

At first I was going to comment "NO DOUG FLUTIE, NOO!" but upon closer inspection of the header image, I realized that it's actually just Losman. Aside from having a terribly ironic name, he just sucks.

I'm holding out hope for Blur, (wipeout with cars/mario kart on nitro) sounds like much more fun to me. Forza looks very impressive though but I think it might be more like work than fun. GT has lost my interest many years ago. I want pickup and play burnout style online without any free roaming nonsense.

GT 5 will be better in every aspect. if you want a semi-realistic arcade racer, get forza. if you want to know how cars ACTUALLY drive and damage, get GT. its that simple. Polyphony takes 5 years to develop a game because they want it to be perfect, Forza games comes out more frequently because they want money. yes, and GT 5 has NASCAR and WRC

I think all the big car buffs who have both systems will just.... get both? It's a car game, jeez! If you love cars so much, why would you care if it's an exclusive or which is better, as long as they are both great?

Unless you spent all your money on cars and only have one console :P

"if you want a semi-realistic arcade racer, get forza"

Ehhh, more like, if you want a semi-realistic arcade racer, get Project Gotham 4. Forza is a simulation racing game, just like gran turismo is. I'm sorry if that sets your fanboi rage off, but it's true. Gran Turismo may have better physics or whatever, but that doesn't disqualify every other simulation racer out there.

"I think all the big car buffs who have both systems will just.... get both?"

BINGO! Both games are very similar and have good things to offer. I don't see why these comment threads can't be full of car talk instead of fanboi nonsense. I guess I'll start. While not the fastest, the e30 M3 is the best track car ever made. Discuss.

Clearly this discussion should be put on hold until both games are actually out and you can make some meaningful comparisons. All this 'GT5 WILL BE ELEVENTY BILLION TIMES MORE REAL THAN FORZA 3 WILL BE YOU NOOBS' is kind of pointless.

GT5 sucks because I can't put a sticker of a fat chick on fire on the side of my car.
Sarcasm aside, I have Forza 2 and I really am not that excited for 3 I just want to try GT5 for christs sake. Prologue doesn't count either.

Maybe we should wait for the games to come out first, HMMM??????

Though I am totally psyched for Forza 3 and don't have a PS3, so the choice is pretty clear on my end...

If all I have to play this game with is a joypad or a think microsoft call a wheel then this new features mean sqat to me! It's that simple. Who can a game be so much better than the other with such limited controls???

I don't understand people who think that a driving simulator is perfectly fine without damage or crashing. I've seen the way people drive in Gran Turismo. Just drive as fast as you can... pull up beside someone at the corner and use their car to keep yourself in the corner. That sort of crap doesn't hold water in real life, it shouldn't in a simulator.
I'm not saying that the Forza series is the end all be all of console racing, but they are trying.

While I appreciate the talent of the Polyphony, GT series suffers from the same crap japanese 3d games do. Some take far too long to get product to shelves. And we all thought Duke Nukem was late. Taking all that time to include damage physics was a self mastubatory car nuts madness, to keep cars looking like models in a show room.

Beyond GT, the japanese have a lot to learn about driving games.

However, Forza, while many may slate it, filled a gap that GT left wide open. Forza 2 is out now and can be piced up dirt cheap. Forza 3 will more than likely arrive before GT turns up on PS3.

In truth, the western devs own the drivng game genre now. From simpler fun fare of Burnout, to the more comple stylings of Dirt, Grid etc. I hope the Polyphony team took notes at E3, because that was always their main failing, ignoring the potential competition.

I'm still not sure why I'm writing a comment here to address the matter, but don't all of you realize that the editors just take this old-ass news, summarize it, and form an opinion (opposite of what the majority of people think) in order to score them some hits/comments. It's pretty obvious that's what Mr. Razak was going for, and what better day to do it than Sunday?

All the people who say that GT is more realistic than Forza... have you actually played both series of games? Do you know how cars actually handle?

I used to LOVE the GT series, I owned all 4 and even bought GT5 Prologue. But I got tired of waiting for GT5 to finally release, so I got recently got an Xbox 360 and Forza 2. Although it has some issues in areas (eg no qualifying? WTF?), there is no doubt that Forza 2 has a much more relaistic driving model than any GT game so far released.

Do this quick comparison:

In Forza 2, turn off all the assists, accelerate to a high speed, slam on the brakes, and turn the wheel. You'll hear a realistic screeching sound from the tires, and the car simply will not turn as it slides with tires lockes up.

Do the same in GT5P, or in GT4, try to hear the weak screeching sound, and see your car start to make the corner (albeit understeering).

How can you call GT the most realistic when you can't even lock up your tires?

davo you are saying this because you didn’t spend some time with GT5 Prologue, because the game have a option to set the ABS to 0 (the first version of prologue didn’t have this option). And if you don’t have a G25 to play Gran Turismo 5 Prologue then you have no idea how good this game is.

At this moment in time the only information we have is how GT5 will look, which is pretty sharp. We have no info on how it will play, it could be more of the same or they could do something really special with it. It's just too early to make judgements on this. Forza 3 looks pretty special though, & this from a PS3 only owner.

As a realistic racing sim, I think the GT is the better series. Although I think with the push from Forza, it's making some competition so Polophony doesn't get complacent with the series as they have been. I'm just worried that since the competition for each game is exclusive to two different consoles, it's not enough of a direct competition unless EA's Need for Speed's series push to realism is big enough to make them worry. I doubt it will.
