Gran Turismo 5 uses 80 percent of the PS3's power? photo

Polyphony Digital's Kazunori Yamauchi said that his super-delayed racer Gran Turismo 5 uses about 80 percent of the PS3's processing power. The game creator tells GamesBeat that the system has a "very high peak performance." He adds: "The better you manipulate it, the better it performs."

I guess they've spent all this time manipulating the game, then.

That's a number that I'm sure he pulled out of his ass. I'm sure there's no percentage gauge on the outside of his dev kits that shows how much the car system is cranking. Still, if he's sure that he's put that much work into milking the system to make it do what he wants, that tells me we're going to have an impressive game on our hands after all of this waiting. Hopefully.

well, if GT5 is perfect in every way, there would be no reason to make a sequel. I guess this is just preparation for the GT6 hype train, "it uses 100% of the PS3's powaah!".
So no need to buy this, just wait for the sequel people.

Well Uncharted 2 apparently used 100% and that game rocked my virtual gaming socks off, so I guess GT5 is going to be 20% weaker than Naughty Dog's power house title. Which is alright, I guess.

I hate all this bullcrap. "All the PS3's power", "80% of the PS3's power", "Only possible on the PS3". It means NOTHING. If it's using all the PS3's power, it may very well be poorly optimized, hacked together code. If it's only possible on the PS3, it's probably using workarounds to problems that use the PS3's hardware architecture, not that a similar solution couldn't be rigged up for another console.

I HATE this sort of talk. It's what happens when you talk computer science to PR dudes.

Can anyone else picture some giant PS3 dev kit with pipes, steam gauges and loads of people cheering when it reaches 80%

Nope, thought not.....

Just me then :-(

Respectively GT5 doesn't look THAT great. So if that's 80% I'm assuming Uncharted 2 is 110%?

Seriously how can anyone claim using a percentage of a console anyway? Like it's that simple.

uh... why not use the remaining 20% ?

ridiculous,
guys that is why this game wont come out ever...
they havent captured 100% of the power of the Cell yet !!!

I played and finished GT1, GT2, FM1, FM2, I dont have GT5 Prologue, I downloaded the time trial demo (which was underwelming to me), I own and finished Forza Motorsport 3.

And I am not excited about this game yet...

Also, it's a well known fact (at least it should be), it's not about the percentages of power usage, it's about the efficiency of the engine and optimization. So that means those 80% can still be so mindblowingly awesome it will cure cancer and aids.

You really should drop it with all of your "delay" bullshit. How can a game be delayed so many times when it has never had a release date outside of one that was announced only for japan?

Drop the act.

They may only be using 80% of the CPU, but after all these delays they must be well over 100% of their budget ;)

Maybe the cars in the Franchise will only start to show scratches and other damage when they use 90% (gotta wait 2 more years for gt6 prologue)

the mans a perfectionist so whenever the game comes, it'll be perfect in his eyes, until a week after release when he thinks of something he should have put in, but that's what patches are for.

What's this!? It's power level keeps increasing! This can't be right!

*checks PS3 power percentage reader*

This game is using OVER 9,000% of the PS3's power!!!

*power reader shatters*

*PS3 transforms into mutant robot and kills us all*

Um, it may not have had release "dates" but it's had several release windows, none of which its kept.

Woe the day any game makes the claim, "it uses 100% of the PS3's powaah!". For on that day a space time continuum rift inside of a black hole formed inside of the cell processor will break your living room in two, and probably result in your kool-aid marring the finish of your coffee table too.

If making cars that look shiny really takes that much power, I would be in the camp that says, the cars in grid and paradise city were plenty shiny. Please tone down the shiny and give me some damage animation.

Can someone explain why your tires squeal going around a turn a 30 miles per hour in the GT5 demo? and then you spin out?

If that was a realistic sim of how real world cars behave - we would all be dead, and no one would be left to play video games.

I only know PC hardware, but if you made a PC with the same GPU/CPU balance as the PS3 has, then the processor would just be total overkill, and the GPU would make a bottleneck before the CPU reached its limit.. don't know if it's the same on consoles..

@dband14 the whole thing that makes a console so radically different than a pc is because the Console architecture allows for many types of computational differences that most pcs do not have. the ability to fully optimize their settings. Note that I say most Because there are always exceptions to the rule.

so why the hell didn't you 100% of the processing power like every other games do? Why didn't you just say like what Naughty dog says? This game can't be made on 360 and it uses 100% of PS3. Dim weet half f'king brain dweep.

GT5 never had an official release window, all the windows that were made were through pure speculation by the press.

Neither Sony or PD officially announced a release window.

So, sorry but you are wrong.

How exactly do you measure this kind of thing? Do they have some sort of scale of implied values that make up the theoretical maximum power of the system?

Considering certain developers say it's 'bottomless' and others claim they're nowhere near reaching full potential, how can you honestly judge this? Who's to say we tapped 100 percent of the power from the Xbox and PS2?

80% of RAM ?
80% of the hard disk ?
80% of the data rate between the RAM and the FSB ?
80% of the CPU power would be stupid ... when a program runs the CPU is always at top performance.

WTF do they mean with 80% of the "processing power"?

I got the demo and I wasn't impressed at all. The graphics weren't as good as I thought they would be and gameplay was lacking.

Actually, I think it's using more like 0%, since no one is currently playing that fucking game.

You are kidding right? With operating system support it is very easy to establish an average of your processor utilisation. In fact when writing a performance critical program which must utilise more than one CPU it is very important that you be acutely aware of this figure.

Dear bowie,

You're clearly unaware of how development-side computer architecture works. My favorite part was your "with operating system support it is very easy" line, where you're referring to the CPU utilization bar in your windows Task Manager. Please stop. It hurts the rest of us.

Sincerely,
This Guy

lol... not a fanboy or anything in fact i find most 360 games look dazeling
compared to the ps3's but dont you think theres a bit too much negative critcism when anything "ps3" comes up. i mean seriously, you guys cant wrap your heads around the 80% usage?! one of you even made the absurd comment that all programs use 100% of cpu power. anyway im not here to slam anyone for not knowing any better but you should at least do some kind of research before posting. However ive been doing some research on the cell processor and yes it is quite a beast. Its design poses the best usage of processing frequency(hz).
This is also the reason its so hard to work with. Every single calculation has to be vectorised before execution(no task for bare hands) and making a compiler for auto-vectorization is even more of a daunting task. Even when they do its extemely buggy, they'd have to keep updating it. In short IBM makes a compiler (which in itself dose not utilize CELL properly), Sony makes a dev kit based on this and games still do not utilize the dev kit properly. So if you think about it GT5 actually uses 80% of the dev kit. My guess is that the 80% talk is just to keep things simple. With all that said I think its fair to say that the ps3 has a lot of future potential. Anyways I still find it funny you guys cant understand this. Come on people! anyone with vista should have come across one of its sidebar utilities that gives an estimate of your cpu's usage in percentage.
So yes percentage of cpu usage can, and as a matter of fact, should be integrated into dev kits for developers to fine tune there optimizations for more efficient cpu usage.
