When I saw Gran Turismo 5 in its near-finished form at E3, Polyphony Digital's Kazunori Yamauchi showed us a trailer that highlighted the special visual effects that went into the game's engine. It was so lovely that I wished everyone could see it. SCEA has just released it, and now we have it for you.

In the above video you'll see that the particles are lit so accurately that headlights will light up smoke and dust. The sun shining through the dusty afternoon haze is beautiful here. The lighting and reflections are insanely realistic as well. Toward the end of the trailer you'll see collisions galore, complete with flipping cars and burnt rubber smoke.

I can't wait.

im waiting for them to show me if their damage system is just like forza's "change the car skin to scratched" or like GTA4's "HOLY SHIT LOOK AT THAT DENT!"

I could care less about this game after today. I found an unopened copy of Gran Turismo 2: Music At The Speed Of Sound today, which has pretty much turned this into the best driving day ever. So, I'm gonna go do donuts in a parking lot while My Favourite Game by The Cardigans blares through the radio.

So wait, how much does it take to get cars to flip like that? Because...that was kinda ridiculous.

I still have mixed feelings about the 'bumper car' crashing. Its not like the game is otherwise forgiving in terms of time attacks and positioning

Hah, at the end when the "only does everything" text shows up, it says for a very short time "it only does damage". That's good to know.

While GT5 looks fantastic, the physics and damage looks weird... I wonder how people would react if we showed this trailer just 15 years ago, and said "that's how games will look in the not-so-distant future".

That's like saying Halo will tank. The fan base makes it impossible.

42 Seconds in.. pause... Why is that car a flat black sheet on the bottom of it? I thought they stopped doing that after the N64?

Huh. That really doesn't look as good as I'd hoped. You'd think the bajillion years in development would have helped that.
And I agree with the general consensus: show damage models! That could make me eat crow on my previous comment.

So if this is to showcase special effects, why are there no sparks from metal on metal/concrete contact?

Wait, seriously Polyphony? you spend all that time and effort getting it to look great, but as soon as the cars crash they just bounce around? it looks ridiculous... and you couldn't even model the underside? In 2010? Really?

@rel123

The car has a flat black sheet because it's an ALMS racecar (I think it's a P2, but it's hard to tell). Most racecars these days are flat on the bottom to prevent drag, and amplify the downforce created by the body spoilers. All of those fins and wings you see on racecars these days aren't there to look pretty, it's to help move air around the car and make it faster.

Having said that, it remains to be seen if it's only the track cars that have the flat bottom or if it's every car.

YOU CAN'T APPRECIATE THE GRAPHICS USING A SUB-PAR VIDEO PLAYER.

Really Destructoid? Really? 2010 and we are watching videos on your site that look like they're being viewed on a static-ky 90's television? Interesting.

And mostly we have to watch ads first, which means I, personally, open up gametrailers and search for the same video there. Where there's never an ad (adblock plus tyvm)

Anyone that bitches at this comment can suck a fat one. I don't want crap video on my favorite gaming site. Screw Springboard, don't support it.

I know it doesn't matter so much when you're racing, but I'm a little disappointed that they still use flat plane trees. Having scenery that looks like two cardboard cut-outs slotted together brings down the overall look

Gran Turismo is not about smashing up cars until the should be undrivable but still finish the race, it's about each and every turn, it's about shaving off hundredths of seconds and clean passing.

like REAL racing.

As a long time fan of the series, (since the very first yall) I WILL buy this and I'm pretty sure it will not disappoint. Polyphony KNOW what I want from a racer.

Smahes in racing games is quite a contentious issue if you ask me. Yes, you want damage for its realism and sense of danger (driving fast should feel dangerous). But you don't want to have to restart a race every time you have an accident as it would get annoying very quickly... particularly if you weren't disciplined in your driving, or the game's AI caused a crash every 5 seconds.
In a game with time trialling, there's no point at all to damage.
Unless you add rewind features.... which is a WHOLE other kettle of fishheads.

Oh, and okay, crashing penalises those who time trial by driving into walls and bouncing around the track rather than driving properly. Balance people, balance. And heavy playtesting. Reward sharp driving, punish cheats and idiots.

One question: How many cars on the track?

Translation....is this going to be a racing game or another "Driving Simulator"?

Don't get me wrong, I loved the first 2 games (and played the 3rd and 4th), but FORZA has raised the bar and delivered amazing simulation, decent actual RACING (both online and solo) AND done it within a reasonable development time frame.

Yes, it will be a hit just because of the fan base, but GT has lost a lot of fans during this 5 year "development cycle", me included.
