I played a bit of the 3D version of Gran Turismo 5 at CES last week. If you asked me what was the best gaming example of 3D gaming at the show, I would have definitely picked Gran Turismo 5. It did nothing to the game play, but it did look really cool. There was a definite increased depth and sense of speed. The in-car view was very impressive. Honestly, I could have passed on most of the other 3D gaming examples I saw. I'm game for GT5, though. And Sony's 3D glasses (see above) actually look kind of cool, if that helps any.
The folks at Motor Trend were told that Sony is working on a 3D version of the game, which they hope to launch around the same time their 3D television lines launch. At CES, we were told that we could expect to see Sony's 3D sets and glasses hitting shelves later this year. Let's hope Polyphony Digital can make this target. You know how they are, though.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Good to see that they are actually trying to support this 3D thing with some proper games, not just PSN stuff.
I also have to say that I was NOT a fan of 3D before seeing Avatar... which did succeed in changing my mind simply because they didn't often use the whole "jumping out at you" thing that most 3d movies do... instead it just made the regular movie a bit "more".
.... and a note for those worried about the glasses... I also wear prescription glasses (as does my husband). They don't give you those hokey paper glasses anymore at the theatre... I got a plastic pair that was surprisingly VERY comfortable over my existing. I didn't even notice them after a short while.

The firmware update I was thinking about only enables the PS3 itself to do 3d. Duh, the PS3 can output alternating virtual left and right eye frames, very surprising and newsworthy fact I guess...
Sony, get Criterion on the phone! Burnout needs to crash into the third dimension.
Gran Turismo 3 had 3-screen support.
Gran Turismo 4 is the only PS2 game to have 1080i support.
Why is it surprising for anyone that GT5 is making use of a technology few people have? This is nothing new. This is just Polyphony being Polyphony.
What about the normal 2D version. Is that actually going to come out this year?
Come on, it had to be said.
Or do you also think that there are separate versions of PC games for different versions? "Hello, I'd like the 1680x1050 version of WoW please"
