Grab these Chrono Trigger fan games while you can photo

I wrote this post up as fast as I could. In fact, I haven't even had the chance to try these games out yet. That's because by the time you read this, they may be gone. Square-Enix is notoriously ruthless about taking down fan games, so get on this while you still can.

There are two games in question here, the previously squashed Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes and the newer, weirder Chrono Trigger: Flames of Eternity. After a few minutes of research, I'm getting that Flames of Eternity is based off of Crimson Echoes, and that the writing in both games can be a bit... off putting. Talking Chrono is particularly annoying to some fans, but hey, this semi-new, 100% free Chrono Trigger we're talking about! Only the most depressing amongst us will complain about that.

Fan-made Chrono Trigger sequel gets released [GoNintendo]

Grabbed 'em both. God love the fans, and I'm pretty excited to play Crimson Echoes, given how it was previously shut down.

And now to immortalize them both in a single torrent. Viva la revolution!

In that thread I only saw Flames of Eternity, here is the 98% build of Echoes (most consider this one better)

@jondler

I'm fond of ZNES, but BSNES is a good one as well, though finnicky at times.

These look really cool, THX for telling me about these great games Mr Holmes (I still need to play the original which I plan to quite soon.

I love fan games as the better ones usually are really fun expeiences.

BTW do you play doujin games. Theres some great games to come out of C79
you really must play,
Crimson Clover by Yotsubane (A shmup and a really good one at that)
Ougon Musou Kyoku by 07th expansion (A 2D fighter looks really good)
Touhou Koumajou Densetsu 2 aka Touhou-vania 2 by Frontier aja (Castlevania clone

If you love 2D action games you owe yourself as a gamer to check em out

As is now typical of Square-Enix, they'll soon shut down another actually good fan made follow up of one of their legendary classic games while completely ignoring what the fans really want by putting out another spin-off/"sequel" (FF XIII-2) or butchering their main series. How I miss the old Squaresoft... :(

Don't really care for CT, and fancrufted CT is really low on my list of desires. And I hate to pee on the parade, but this is an ips patch applied to a rip of the Chrono Trigger cartridge, is it not? I don't think distributing an already patched ROM gets around the piracy issue...

What I dont understand is that the Japanese Doujin game scene is mostly all fan games of this type, where game, music and manga creators make use of famous IPs like FF, bleach, clannad which are sold in conventions like C79 and even sold in doujin speciality shops and online stores. (Like those 3 games ive listed in my other post)

Its really wierd how Japanese companies allow and even encourage doujin fan games in Japan as they know its free PR. But as soon as some western fans do the same they are straight onto their lawyers.

Stinks of double standards and maybe its a case of racisim against us "gaikokujin" that commonly rears its ugly head every now and again

@ TrevHead- I've played the other two, but I've never heard of Ougon Musou Kyoku. Checking it out now. Thanks for the heads up!

It may be that some user on the pirate bay by the name of meteoscrape is currently seeding both ROMs. He might be doing so for several hours yet, if you search for Chrono Trigger Fan ROMs.

That would be totally awesome.

*whistles innocently*

It may be that meteoscrape has been hit suddenly. He may have opened his upload speed to 1 meg/sec and he may leave his computer on for the next 24 hours, just in case.

I'm just saying... It's possible. Though who's that awesome, really?

You might want to check out this meteoscrape's torrent. From what I read, it has both ROMs which run just fine, though at this point it will take an hour or so to download.

Why not start the torrent and do something manly for an hour, like bend girders into origami or punch orphans until their DNA matches that of childless couples?

its funny the one game we ask for to be remade, they go off and decide we need another ff13.

wait, its nt funny. its downright idiotic. and also we still have yet to see a console kingdom hearts while the handhelds are getting once a year!

if it wasn't for dragon quest, but thats really level-5.

I'm sorta ashamed that this imposter, meteoscrape, has only uploaded the ROMs to 26 people. Can the destructoid community, strong of heart and sound of mind, help save these ROMs from irrelevance!?

@TrevHead these are not fangames, they are rom hacks. Had the story been done as a doujin or even a game made from scratch, I don't think Square Enix would care. But this encourages the distribution of the Chrono Trigger ROM, a game which they released on DS in 2008/09. Even if they have no current plans for they IP, they cannot be seen to condone piracy.

Yea you do have a point. It is a Rom hack not a PC fan game

What's sad is that the rom hack is actually pretty decent. Nowhere near the quality of the original but it's pretty good at making it all happen again and genuinely tries to make sense of the time in between Chrono trigger and Chrono cross. There have been numerous fan made chrono trigger sequels, prequels or remakes, and I totally understand Sqeenix to take that road, but the fact that they don't restart the franchise still eludes me. Chrono trigger is 16 years old, and fans still want more of it. What the hell are they waiting for?
