It's great to see LotRO succeed - we need a complete Middle Earth to explore, and Turbine come closer and closer to providing it. There's, what, two expansions' worth of content left in the main story (Gondor, Mordor). Then the devs can take a well-earned break.
Is this worth trying to get into?
I love LOTR, but I'm just so tired of your basic MMO crap being repeated over and over. I get it, you want me to kill your cows because your AI limits you to standing in one spot and killing any random demons that enter the village, how about you tell me to at least kill something interesting?
I want to get into this, but I'm just not sure if I can, I need another opinion on it.

LoTRO really depresses me. I wanted to enjoy it so badly. I played several hours past the point where I wanted to write it off as being too dated for newcomers to get into. But i finally reached the point where the clunky controls and game mechanics, and the boring graphics, were just way too past their prime for me to find it enjoyable. Being a huge Tolkien, I would put up with almost anything to be able to explore Middle Earth, but not when the entire realm looks like fucking Two Worlds and your character moves and fights like they've got a Hobbit in their ass.
The incoming launch of Guild Wars 2 didn't help much, either.

You dont play LotRO for the gameplay(its old, stale, and been done a thousand times already), you play it for the lore/exploration/geeking out and the terribly lame stories Turbine has thought up to fill the gaps.
Personally I put a few bucks into it every year and dont play it consistently, and when I do its mostly as a single-player game. Since it no longer requires a monthly, youre pretty much free to play(see what I did there?) whenever you want to - which is enough of a reason to try and get into it over other generic MMOs.
Anyway, the Warden can be a lot of fun to play(or a Minstrel). My only real gripe is the lack of beard options for Man.

How is the magic? The thing about the movies at least was that "magic" was very limited and visually almost non-existent. In a video game, I want to see lots of spells going off.
