Just in case you missed all the fun, GamePolitics (a site run by perhaps the only guy who could ever claim to be a "games journalist" seriously) recently ran an editorial questioning the state of Utah's funny decision to name Jack Thompson a hero at its Freedom Festival awards. Jack was honored for personifying American values of family, freedom, God and country. Most of us honor him for being "a bit of a tit."
Regardless, GP's Dennis McCauley pointed out that the so-called American hero has recently unlocked the following achievements:
- has been recommended for a 10-year disbarment by the Florida Bar
- has been judged guilty of 27 ethical offenses by a Florida judge, who is sending her recommendation to the Florida Supreme Court
- the 27 offenses include things like: "Knowingly making a false statement", "Engaging in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation" and " Engaging in conduct in connection with the practice of law that is prejudicial to the administration of justice"
- may no longer submit filings to the Florida Supreme Court, in part because he included porn pictures in a motion (and NOT in a pornography case)
- included gay porn pictures in a federal court filing (also not a pornography case)
- received a cautionary visit from the U.S. Marshals following a federal court filing in which he wrote "...enemy combatants at Guantanamo are to get more due process from federal judges than what I am to have. I guess my "mistake" was not killing 3000 people to make my point..."
- called for the impeachment of Utah's Republican Attorney General when the AG suggested that a video game bill written by Thompson would be unconstitutional
Heroic? GP thinks not, but Jack Thompson would argue otherwise. In fact, the silver-haired Lothario actually responded to GP's editorial, despite one's first thought that an American hero would have better things to do. Jack had this to say:
Dennis, you have posting up here calling me a douchebag and the like. Nice that you enforce your posting policies--not--when it comes to me.Further, you have up at this site the assertion that I lobbied to get myself nominated for this award. I didn't know anything about it until these folks called. You were told that. The Foundation told you that, and yet this site is nothing more than an opinion toilet where gamers who have absolutely nothing better to do make up "facts" as if this were some kind of Sims game.
The Foundation knew ALL about my problems with the Bar. I told them. The fact is this: Dennis McCauley and his little lemmings here were so cruel and so bigoted and such liars that what went on here confirmed their choice and made the award all that sweeter.
I sat on the back of a convertible today at the parade, riding by 200,000 or more people, with mothers of kids on their laps waving and saying "Thank you for trying to protect our kids."
You fascist immoral jerks can have your games. I have the heart of America. And you, Dennis, are a liar.
Jack Thompson
Personally, we here at Destructoid extend our congratulations to Jack Thompson. We're thrilled that our old friend got to watch thousands of children from the back of a car, something that I'm sure he's always wanted to do.
GamePolitics might question Utah's decision to name Jack Thompson an American hero, but we understand fully. With America gripped by fear and confusion and finding itself run by those with a lack of understanding and tolerance, one can see why Thompson is seen to reflect everything that the country stands for.
Hahaha! Pot, kettle, black.
We love you Jack!
I think he has the heart of Imaginationland.
1. Heart of America? Last I checked, America wasn't predominantly Mormon, crazy, extreme right-wing, and all about having sex with more than one underage girl at once. Maybe he should look into that a bit more. He can be the hero of Utah for all I care. I'll lean towards the normal state's ruling that he's a nutjob.
2. Honestly, where does all this videogame = violence crap start? Shouldn't we look at historical violence levels and at least see if there's a correlation? I mean, correlation doesn't equal causation, but it's a start.
http://ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/glance/cv2.htm - Oops, violent crime stayed pretty level up until 1993 (when Doom was released). Guess what happened after that? IT CRASHED! Violent crime is less than half of what it was before Doom was released. For Christ's sake, I can make this kind of stuff up.
Okay, well, let's look at property crime then: http://ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/glance/house2.htm - Oops, also crashing. It's been on a slow decline since the early 70's, and is now almost ONE THIRD what it was a few decades ago. What happened to Grand Theft Auto...?
Well you gotta give him something to do.
Actually, that's what it is, in a nutshell.
on the other hand it's a good reason to kill myselfe now before the eu will catch the virus (london is allready there -.-)
hail paranoia and lies
That's a good Fantasy, Jack.
Now, I live in Miami and I don't recall any parades for fascists or nazis.
"This is MADNESS..."
"No... This is UTAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!"
* someone kicks somebody into a pit *
He's bumming the whole state of Florida.
"...riding by 200,000 or more people, with mothers of kids on their laps waving..."
Is it just me or do both of those "sentences" make absolutely no sense?
Dtoid loves ya Jakiee.
Yes, all 200,000 people were cheering on you and you alone, Jack. And every mother and child said, and I quote, "Thank you, Jack Thompson, for protecting the children. You are the only one who does."
If this doesn't prove Jack Thompson has delusions of grandeur and a healthy messiah complex, I don't know what will.
Also, I'm glad I watched the clip AFTER reading the article. It brought to mind Thompson standing in a spotlight yelling, "Violence!"..."Kids!"..."Bad games!"
I lol'd.
Also let me apologize for not taking the opportunity afforded to me to put an end to this menace once and for all.
But in all seriousness... I'm ashamed of my state, But that's honestly nothing new. And after reading the article and finding out that it's Provo (The home of BYU and one of the churches main `strongholds`), I'm not at all surprised. Salt Lake is much much more liberal and open then anywhere south of it. Provo is full of right-wing conservative nut jobs.
No, really, more attention to this man, 200.000 people called him a hero? Really? You in the US deserve this guy.
Wait. What!? Did he just accuse someone else of making up facts?! That's ironic as fuck.
He deserves a slap in the face and a slice of humble pie. Dude's a prick. Plain and simple.
"You fascist immoral jerks can have your games. I have the heart of America. And you, Dennis, are a liar."
WTF Jack? The heart of America is not the conservative Christian agenda...
So, not all conservatives are bad. It's just the vocal assholes who make the rest of us look bad.
"Dennis McCauley and his little lemmings here were so cruel and so bigoted and such liars that what went on here confirmed their choice and made the award all that sweeter."
I see what he's trying to say but his use of LEMMINGS was uneducated, lemmings do not ,as the myth claims, follow blindly or commit mass suicide to reach their goal that's just a misconception.
Note to JACK THOMSON (I hope you're reading this cos you clearly have nothing better to do that google your own name)
Educate your self before spouting tripe, I left school before getting a decent education , I've never read the bible nor had a great level of religious education, My pastimes consist of all the things that have been blamed for increased crime and suicide Eg. Heavy metal music, rap music, horror and action films, video games etc, Plus I also work in an independent video games store, and I work on Sundays which I hear is somewhat frowned upon in some religious circles, surely Mr Thomson I should be some sort of social degenerate who steals, kills, beats, rapes, and commits suicide at the end of it all, but instead I am a loving Husband and Father, I work 2 jobs so that we can have financially comfortable life.
I've been listening to Metal music and playing video games since I was about 4 or 5 years of age, now I'm 29 and I've had no urge to commit any criminal act. How can that be if by your logic just one of these thing can lead me to a life of crime.
I hope you read this JACKhammer
Kind Regards
RAZGATE
Man I'd love to have an actual chat with Jack, I think given our differences we'd get along. :D
Unfortunately, all the decision makers in the state are quite looney.

meh, congratulation to him anyway.
I'm no hero...
Also, what's with the prejudices against Mormons? They should be respected as much as followers of any other flavor of religion (ie Catholics, Protestants, Muslims, Jews...), and they outlawed the polygamy thing a loong time ago afaik.
