In an interview with Gamasutra, Gears of War franchise senior producer Rod Fergusson suggested that the Xbox 360 is reaching its technological potential with heavyweight titles such as Too Human and Smash Court Tennis 3 eagerly occupying store shelves. Kidding aside, Fergusson maintained that even though the Xbox 360 has a technological ceiling, he sees "room to grow” for titles in the future.
…I think we're certainly approaching the upper end of [the Xbox 360 technological potential] as far as what developers are able to do with it, but just looking at all the demos we saw today -- ours and others -- it's clear that all the games just keep improving, and keep pushing that bar.
There will be games in development that won't ship until 2010, and I'm sure they'll look killer, just because, again, they'll have more time with it, and learn from mistakes and optimizations of others. So, I don't know; I think we're getting up there, but I still think there's room to grow.
Of course, Fergusson’s comments on future titles looking better could be a little biased, as we all expect Gears of War 3 to hit in the 2010 timeframe. Fergusson’s suggestion is rather interesting, though. Do you guys think that the Xbox 360 is hitting its technological plateau or will radical, platform-defining games continue to come out for the console?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I'm sure there's a helluva lot more room to grow than they realize. Take the CoD4 engine. They could do a massive amount of stuff with that if they dropped the framerate by 30 (it runs at a constant 60 as it).
Since games like Gears run at 30, a ridiculously good looking CoD5 could run at 30 and blow everything away.
We'll see, though. One way or another, things are looking damn good at this point in time. If all games as good as Gears 2but hopefully more colorful), I'll be a happy guy.
Yeah, GoW confuses me too.
The PS2 didn't hit its limits until 2006 and 2007. Titles like Final Fantasy XII, Valkyrie Profile 2, and God of War 2 all pushed the limits of the PS2 beyond what anyone could have hoped. All three of those titles are absolutely gorgeous (and fun) games that completely redefined the upper levels of what the PS2 could put out when developers really pushed it.
Anyway, games will continue to look better and better as new technics are developed and game engines become better. Sure the polly count won't go up because the GPU can only handle a set number of them, but they can get drawed alot more efficient.
He could be bullshitting us, or maybe he's being shortsighted.
Either way, tech limits or not, like people before have said, it's the quality of gameplay that's most important.
As long as they don't ever settle for reaching that limitation, it's all good.
So we can say that MGS4 was pushing the PS3 to it's limit as well, right?
