Got $300? You can have the voice of Duke Nukem photo

Jon St. John, the voice actor who portrays Duke Nukem, works on the cheap. How cheap is cheap? The actor has agreed to record "most" of Zoey's dialogue from Left 4 Dead for a fan-made mod for the princely sum of $300. The designer of the mod is soliciting donations in order to make it happen. If he exceeds the amount required for those lines, they'll continue on with some of Francis' witty remarks.

I really want to joke about how destitute St. John must be, how desperately he needs work, but I can't do it. According to the forum post where the designer announced the idea, the actor really only charges his fee of $50 per 30 seconds of audio because he doesn't want to have to read every bit of written language on Earth in the voice of the bubblegum chewing badass. Seems only fair -- he no doubt has other things he'd rather be doing -- and it's really cool that he's willing to give something to the gamers who have already enjoyed his work so far.

Of course, if he's willing to do stuff like this for such an affordable rate, I can't help but think there are some other games that could benefit from having ol' Duke in them. If we aren't going to get Duke Nukem Forever, we might as well get some of him somewhere.

Eh, the price is reasonable I suppose. I think Don LaFontaine used to do stuff like that for free when people sent him random requests for him to read/voice something.

There are so many things you can do with fifty bucks.
30 seconds of Duke saying what you want him to is the best thing you can do with it.

Having a good voice is a blessing. If you want to go to a great concert, and also do good works for charities, then buy some Tickets for Charity. Tickets for Charity are a program where performance artists, sports teams, and so on, that donate part of the proceeds to charity of their choice. It could be worth paycheck loans, as the list of artists is diverse, and there are some serious heavyweights on the bill. James Taylor, the Elton John and Billy Joel tour, Dane Cook, Brad Paisley, the Boston Red Sox, and the one show guaranteed to not make any money – Creed. Still, it's a noble thing these artists are doing, and it's admirable they are giving cash advances to causes with Tickets for Charity.

The voice actor for Francis has only done Left 4 Dead and one other game. It would probably just be cheaper to hire him.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but why is the man who plays Duke Nukem reading lines as Zoey?

I don't think anyone should be so quick to call him desperate. Overall, voice actors do not make generous wages unless they spread their name out doing gigs like this. Like most actors, singers, comedians or relatively anyone in an entertainment related career that hasn't hit it big, they have to do multiple things while hunting gigs to make a living. Until they're the next Steven Blum or Don LaFontaine, you got to do what you gotta do. Also consider that this probably doesn't factor in costs for studio recording, sound mixing, etc.

But why having the Duke's voice dubbing *Zoey*, of all things? Is she a hard-boiled butch lesbian biker in the mod? Gotta check it out! :P

@s0lesurviv0r:: That dude has to have his own gear right now. Hell, he probably would only need to spend about $1500 bucks (most of which is on a microphone and assuming he already owns a PC) to be able to work from home and produce an excellent quality voice recording. $50 for 30 seconds of delivered product is actually not a bad rate at all -- for either party involved. Hell, it'd take him less than a half hour to have the finished recording. That makes his hourly wage $100/hr. There are many and much worse things that I'd do for an hour to make a hundred bucks...
