Fire Emblem: Goddess of Dawn is one of the few RPG titles announced for the Wii, so I love walking circles around and details of it and poking it with sticks. Originally a GameCube game gone Wii, the developer has almost completely foresaken the Wiimote and gives you the option of:
(A) Wiimote controls held horizontally almost a-la Excite Truck (stupid) (B) Use of the Virtual Console classic controller (smart) (C) What it was originally designed for: the big purple joystick from the failed console. Make no mistake -- this is a GameCube game in Wii clothing.
While I'm waiting for a chance to fiddle with the early build, it seems the game is destined for mediocrity. Early impressions around the Web suggest that the game's strategic gameplay is worth the price of admission, but it's actual presentation is severely lacking overall cowbell. At the very least, the game does feature some nice pre-rendered video (intro shown above). Graphic whores need not apply, but there might be something in the story to hold you over.

You'd think with a game like Fire Emblem being able to select/move your units with the wiimote would be a given. If Nintendo's going to give us leftovers from the corpse of the Cube, they should at least try to tack on something.
I was really dissapointed by Path of radiance, so I'm not sure about this one. Sacred Stones had some of the coolest 2d hand drawn graphics ever, but the 3d graphics in Radiance looked sooper cheesy. I also disliked the fact that they took out the ability to choose where you wanted to go next, effectively removing any way to balance the levels of your team. Plus those aswesome towers... Damn! I need to go play Sacred again...
I've actually been waiting for a game that primarily uses the classic or Gamecube controller rather than just the Wii Remote to show developers that it's alright not to use the Wii Remote. Good for them for not tacking on motion controls. Hopefully if this game is fun more developers will start to like the idea that the Wii Remote isn't the only option.
I feel like this series should have stayed on the handhelds. I'm with Chad. No reason to bring this game into faux-3D in the first place. It doesn't gain anything by it.
I'd support a return to 2D if it was super-high-quality 2D a la Super Paper Mario, but without that flat look.

While I agree with your opinion, Fire Emblem would actually benefit from having a wiimote configuration that simulates a PC strategy game set-up. This game should be proving that strategy games are great for Wii, instead of using old control schemes.
While I'm inclined to to agree with twestern, I would have liked to see the pointer work on this game. Moving the cursor around the battlefield is tailor made for the pointer. I'll still buy it. PoR was great as were the handheld games. I just love me some Fire Emblem.
despite everyones complaints, i think the trailer looked pretty epic. If they can up the graphics alot from what the cube was supposed to be and give boost to certain areas here or there, then give us the use of the wiimote as a cursor(and have it executed nicely) then this could be a really good game. I think i might buy it, looks pretty cool. I guess i will have to wait and see.
Most of these gorgeous intros are down outside of the main developer and for some games this is a good thing. I can't even imagine if it was done in the in-game engine...
Fire Emblem has never, and well never boast amazing visuals so I still don't see why people are complaining about them. Path of Radiance was a great game, but most of the other 2D games were much, much better.
From the videos I've seen, FE10 (GOD) actually looks like a step forward from POR. I do wish they'd spend more time with the art design than with animations and visuals. As we have seen with other games, great art design pwns great graphics any day of the week. And since the Wii hasn't the greatest graphics capabilities, one would expect Intelligent to take that avenue as they have done with the hand held games.
In the end, FE's greatest strengths are rock-solid gameplay and great story telling. (Sometimes music). It seems ID doesn't want to branch out too much into other areas, and I personally do not blame them. FE is one of my favorite strategy franchises and I will be getting this game as soon as it comes out. As long as it's a substantially modest upgrade from FE9, I will be more than happy with it.
Hmm.. I find it odd that so many people care about the graphics so much, as since when was Fire Emblem, or any SRPG about graphics? Path of Radiance was awesome. I don't really care about the graphics in Fire Emblem at all, as they're not the main selling point by any means. What makes Fire Emblem good is strategy.
wow beautiful trailer! i dug it... it's too bad that its not game footage. that always has and forever will be a pet peve of mine: prerendered trailers that aren't gameplay footage. i love the niero's comment about "lacking overall cowbell" and i'll probably use that =D
As a 2D series, Fire Emblem is gorgeous and wonderful. As a 3D series, it looks cheesy and, while the gameplay remains the same, it just ain't the same. Maybe if they played out battles in a cinematic style rather than the "traditional" 2D style it would be better.
I dreamed of a Path of Radiance game where moves were made and, once your turn was complete, everyone moved at once and battled at the same time, as if it were a real war.
Doing that would justify 3D. Else it's just a 2D title without the presentation and kick ass sprites.
if there's still perma-death....eff that! who wants to spend all that time leveling their weak ass, dagger wielding thief... all in the hopes of turning him into an uber-ninja/assassin... only to have him permanently killed!!!
Thanks for making such a cool project. I've been checking the site for the Windows version, but I never left a comment about it. I know you are working hard and doing it for free so you shouldn't feel rushed or anything.

(btw I think Mario needs his own RTS to usher in the obvious usefulness of the Wiimote for that genre)
1st post.

What do you get when you take away the motion controls from the Wii?
A Gamecube. With Miis.
