Gore Verbinski is the new Uwe Boll: 'Pirates' director to take on Second Life photo

First BioShock and now Second Life? It looks like director Gore Verbinski has found a new calling in life!

According to recent reports in Variety, the Pirates of the Caribbean director has just signed on to direct a movie based on the virtual life phenomenon that is Second Life. While few details are known at this early stage, it seems the movie will focus on the human people involved in the "game," not the actual avatars that live inside it.

The story will supposedly center on an older, married, diabetic chain smoker who, in his virtual world, is a muscular ladies' man with a chain of successful clubs and retail stores, who's "married" to another player. Sounds interesting enough, but I would love, for once, if someone had enough balls to reverse those roles. Not all of us gamers are self-proclaimed “losers” that need to find success and happiness within the confines of a computer screen.

What do you think? Would you pay to see a movie about Second Life? Since it is apparently his new thing, what videogame should Mr. Verbinski tackle next?

I would rather pay money to watch a movie about how after watching a movie about myself I am painfully tortured and killed for doing such.

The only thing that interests me is that the lead is a Diabetic? O.o

Ya, because everyone knows that Second LIfe is the newest thing.

Why won't the media learn that NO ONE plays Second LIfe. They all act like its this amazing futuristic vision of the future, but ya, that aint happening.

@Garison

Oh no, people do in fact play Second Life in great number. I know this because a buddy of mine maintains the servers. And they grief him, a lot.

I second that call for a GUN movie.

Although you say the movie will center around the human people involved with the game, I can't imagine it being very interesting. The picture I have in my minds-eye is of the fat guy on South Park's WoW episode, eating chips and catatonically clicking away.

@eternalplayer: I lol'd.

Hey, is that that Newsweek editor? The one who spell his name with an apostrophe?

I wouldn't, but I've heard enough good news articles about the game and the people who play it to get an idea of what it would be about.

I didn't even know what Second Life was until it was mentioned in a Home article a week ago.

Verbinski is a good director, though.

It could be good. I know for certain a movie about a well-adjusted person playing second life would be a disaster, but I don't think that's what you meant. Imagine if Todd Solondz was directing.

To be fair, not all gamers are 'losers' but Second Life isn't known for it's populace of emotionally and socially well balanced memberbase.
Saying that, it's probably a terrible idea for a movie.

I'm sorry what?!?

What they hell kind of movie could ANYONE make out of second life?? It would probably be a porno about a guy trying to lead a legitimate life but constantly having to bone legions of girls and the occaisonal (but not so occaisonal) teenaged boy.

I lol'd at the pic.

Also, if I'm not willing to pay for the game proper (which I've had to try twice for old college courses), why would I pay to see a movie about it? This has dismal failure written all over it.

I'd rather see a documentary about the sad sacks of flesh who play Second Life obsessively for real. So I can point and laugh.

it doesn't really matter that the guy's been stereotyped as a fat loser - 2nd lifers aren't really gamers so it doesn't reflect on us... Anyway, how are they going to film the 'in game' sections? Second life is a crappy, jagged, pixellated POS and it'd look shocking on a big screen. The film is going to be the biggest bullshot ever.

Also, in b4 flying penis squadrons

It's probably going to be a fictional movie that'll be shot much like a documentary.
