Google shutting down Lively, makes up for it with awesome ninja Gmail skin photo

On December 31, Google will be shutting down its web-based virtual social environment Lively.

"Embedded rooms in blogs and other web pages will continue to show an image," reads a statement on Lively's official page, "but users will no longer be able to enter Lively rooms and interact."

Launched last July, the Google Labs project allowed users to create virtual rooms, decorate them, and create avatars. Likened to Second Life and Sony's "it's coming, we swear!" PlayStation Home, Lively didn't quite take off like the folks at Google had expected.

And maybe I was part of the problem -- I've never once used it. Perhaps it's because I don't spend much time in virtual spaces outside of cooperative or competitive videogames (I prefer to do my chatting in person, thank you very much). Still, it's sad to see such an ambitious project go down, and I look forward to the ineffectual online petitions trying to keep it alive.

In other news, Google recently revealed "skins" for Gmail, one that includes ninjas. What more do you people want?

Well, I'll tell you one problem. I use pretty much everything Google puts out: gmail, google talk, igoogle, google reader, docs, etc. Hell, I'm even viewing this page with Chrome, but I've never even heard of Lively until just now.

i use it, its pretty good. you can put a jumbotron up and stream youtube videos. alot of other cool things too. too bad google is shutting it down. there was thousands of public rooms people frequented. could only imagine there would be an equal amount of private rooms if not more.

WTF I'd never even heard of this 'Lively' before.

If I had then I probably would of tried it out at some point.

I'm kinda on the net everyday too, so quite surprised something like this slipped past me.

maybe they just needed to get the word out more about this.... I am sure if others are reporting about this then they may actually find that they get an increase and may keep it open.

Same as a couple other have said, I didn't knew it existed until now.

Oh, and I'm still deciding on what theme to use for gmail.

At least I don't feel so bad about never having heard of it either. I think Google just failed to promote their new feature this time.

Google failed at marketing? When did I warp to an alternate reality where the Masters of the Internet can't convince us all to use something?

Where do you get/use skins for gmail? Gmail Redesign was nice, but their servers have been sucking balls recently so I'd prefer to have google host the mail skins.
