I'm constantly keeping tabs on Silent Hill 8. The series is at the top of my list, and I'm very excited about how this is looking/sounding so far. I think I'm a bit more open than your typical Silent Hill fan, which I've been calling a "purist" lately. See, I really enjoyed both Silent Hill: Homecoming and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, unlike some others that expect every game to be the next Silent Hill 2. I'm open for any interpretation as long as they don't blindly insult older characters and monsters as fan service. Quit it with that sh*t!
A Czech game site called Doupe interviewed Silent Hill 8 lead designer Mark Berka, and everything that came out of that review lets me know that the game is on the right track. I'll break out some of the positive bulletpoints:
- Silent Hill 2 is a primary influence for atomsphere
- No inspiration comes from the film [aww, no tit ripping?]
- They are working with key development members from the series
- The game focuses on psychological horror rather than survival horror
Do your thing, Vatra. It sounds like you've got a good mindset. Between this information and what I pulled from Tom Waltz, the writer behind Silent Hill 8, I think we're in good hands.

Oh, and those Silent Hill 8 details sound good to me, too.
The atmosphere is the same across all SH games, its the story that makes or breaks it.
sounds
good
Personally I like SH1&3 far more than #2, so sod it. The last few SH games haven't impressed me ata ll (in fact I thought Homecoming was downright terrible) but I've kept an eye on SH8 and will probably pick it up when it's released. It's sounding decent enough so far, SH2-a-like or not.
i don't trust this game since the very first video, i didn't trust Homecoming, i knew SH3 will be too focused on action from the TGS03 video and felt good about shattered memories almost immediately after hearing about the concept behind it. i will trust my Hill Sense again and see if it was right:)
But they also had a lot of bad things about them that balanced out the greatness.
But the only thing SH2 (and even more shattered memories) did better than most sequels - they totally ignored some "canon" things in the "sh world". Lack of "series canon" is what makes SH interesting
It was, possibly, the closest thing to "personal horror" ever in the videogame:)
Knowing when the enemies are going to attack ruined it a bit.
In fact, I don't think I've played any this generation at all. There have been a lot of decent ones but most have been just blah.
The last series that actually creeped me the hell out was Fatal Frame, with FF2 being the scariest.
Play Penumbra -_- The last "brick-from-backside-generating" game i've played in the last few years. Amnesia is great and deserves all the love it's getting, but it's much more story-horror-survival oriented. Penumbra was survival-horror-story oriented
Skip.
SH is still my favorite of the series. The second one was ok and then it was downhill from there.
!. News of new silent hill game gets fan excited. Nurses, fog and troubled protagionist are shown
2. Developers promise silent hill 2 is basis for new game
3. Game comes out to weak reviews and disappointment
4. Fans promise to never get excited about another silent hill game again!
and repeat
oh and, YAY FOR SILENT HILL 8!!!!!
By the way I freaking loved the movie, I think it's one of the most decent game to movie adaptations there are there (and you know how those usually fare.)
SH2 was the last major high point for the series (SH:The Room doesn't even count as it wasn't even supposed to be a SH game) which is nearly ten years old so hope is beginning to fade for me.
So because he said they are using the Atmosphere from 2 as a basis of the atmosphere in this game...you're going to automatically skip it?
Wow...over that one little comment eh? lol
YAY!
I can understand trying to replicate what worked in the past especially with a series like Silent Hill where the second installment released nearly 10 years ago is still the high point in the series. However it bothers me that in videogames developers seem to think we "want" to play the same thing we already played. I like similarities, and I don't think elements of a game should just fly out of left field, but some experimentation is not such a bad thing.
Videogames seem to be one of the only mediums I can think of where redundancy is rewarded. It's cool when a band tries something new, and no one wants to watch a movie that is exactly like something that came before it, but with videogames developers and a fair ammount of the community just want the same experience over and over.... it's enough to drive a once experimental and satisfying series like Silent Hill into the grave.
And failing that, I want a sequel to Shattered Memories, dammit.
I agree completely.
The story has to be good. Thats actually the only way to take advantage of the atmosphere. Otherwise you're left with a cliche.... something like looks like it belongs in a marilyn manson video. If the imagery and sound doesn't resonate with the characters its no good. And if the characters don't resonate with the player its not even worth the effort.
to me, the Silent Hill series is dead until I'm convinced otherwise, however hearing that "No inspiration comes from the film" (which was one of the major problems with Homecoming) and "They are working with key development members from the series" gives me a lot of hope, maybe Silent Hill will finally fucking get the current gen installment it deserves?

anyway in case I haven't made it clear enough, I thought Homecoming was a bland, unscary piece of tripe with unimpressive graphics, a lame story and it amounted to little more than references to the movie and the other games in the series, I'm still bitter over it almost two years because I spent 60 bucks on it
the nicest things I can say about it is some of the music was good and it starts off promising (though quickly goes downhill
I don't know, I miss the time where that mindset existed where showcasing a up close picture of a person's face smiling was considered "scary" (I'm referring to SH1's soundtrack cover).
