Good news on Silent Hill 8's direction from designer photo

I'm constantly keeping tabs on Silent Hill 8. The series is at the top of my list, and I'm very excited about how this is looking/sounding so far. I think I'm a bit more open than your typical Silent Hill fan, which I've been calling a "purist" lately. See, I really enjoyed both Silent Hill: Homecoming and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, unlike some others that expect every game to be the next Silent Hill 2. I'm open for any interpretation as long as they don't blindly insult older characters and monsters as fan service. Quit it with that sh*t!

A Czech game site called Doupe interviewed Silent Hill 8 lead designer Mark Berka, and everything that came out of that review lets me know that the game is on the right track. I'll break out some of the positive bulletpoints:

  • Silent Hill 2 is a primary influence for atomsphere
  • No inspiration comes from the film [aww, no tit ripping?]
  • They are working with key development members from the series
  • The game focuses on psychological horror rather than survival horror

Do your thing, Vatra. It sounds like you've got a good mindset. Between this information and what I pulled from Tom Waltz, the writer behind Silent Hill 8, I think we're in good hands.

I haven't seen the movie, so I don't really get the tit-ripping reference. But it kind of sounds like an unconventional intensifier, like "rip-snorting"-- eg. "I had a tit-ripping good time at the concert last night."

Oh, and those Silent Hill 8 details sound good to me, too.

But it wasnt the atmosphere that made silent hill 2 great, it was the story and how deep it went.

The atmosphere is the same across all SH games, its the story that makes or breaks it.

Hey, remember when Double Helix banged on about how they were emulating Silent Hill 2 for Homecoming? Didn't really work out too well. As a fan, I don't want anyone to copy my favourite game of all time. I want them to make something original. Climax had the right idea for Shattered Memories, so what's the obsession with trying to remake SH2?

I loved Homecoming a lot but Shattered Memories is my least fave of the series. The controls were broken for me and the true feelings of anxiousness and being scared were only in the running sections because those were the only sections that you could die. so the rest just felt meh BUT the overall story was on point and so was the music. I'm digging how this silent hill is coming together but honestly as long as we get another silent hill i will always be there.

@Stevil same reason that Square keep bringing back Final Fantasy VII's rotting corpse and why there's all this shit over Dante's haircut in the new DMC. Bloody fanboys. They get hung up on one or two things in a series and from that point on nothing can be perfect yet they'll always cry for more. If you say you're making a Silent Hill game entirely different to SH2, you get shit on. If you say you're making a game like SH2 then you'll get shit on once the game is released and your product isn't an exact remake of the original. If you did just remake SH2, you'll get shit on for being lazy. Basically once the brainless "hardcore fans" have decided to champion a particular game in your series, every other game you mkae is screwed before development has even begun. They won't accept a re-tred, they won't accept a variation and they won't accept anything new.

Personally I like SH1&3 far more than #2, so sod it. The last few SH games haven't impressed me ata ll (in fact I thought Homecoming was downright terrible) but I've kept an eye on SH8 and will probably pick it up when it's released. It's sounding decent enough so far, SH2-a-like or not.

a lot of similar was said about Homecoming.
i don't trust this game since the very first video, i didn't trust Homecoming, i knew SH3 will be too focused on action from the TGS03 video and felt good about shattered memories almost immediately after hearing about the concept behind it. i will trust my Hill Sense again and see if it was right:)

Wasn't a huge fan of homecoming (better than the room but not as good as the first three) but I did enjoy Shattered Memories more than most. As long as it actually brings me a good story I will be happy. Silent Hill is a series that lives or dies by its story, atmosphere, and depth so not the typical game being made today.

And i also don't get the whole "we were inspired by SH2" thing. SH series don't have an "overall best" game. SH had the best size+exploration+easter eggs. SH2 had the best story+music. SH3 had the best visual presentation. SH4 had the second best presentation (in first-person mode). didn't play sh0. homecoming has loading-less feel (the only good point). SM had the best overall presentation and "game playing you" thing.
But they also had a lot of bad things about them that balanced out the greatness.
But the only thing SH2 (and even more shattered memories) did better than most sequels - they totally ignored some "canon" things in the "sh world". Lack of "series canon" is what makes SH interesting

I'll remain skeptical that anything they say will actually mean anything. The trailers did look for promising though, so I'm hoping it'll be better than that Homecoming drivel.

@NiNFAN1990 agreed. Homecoming's big problems were storytelling, characters and plot. The focus on action wasn't so much the problem. I think it was definitely the worst in the series. My favorites were 1, 4 and shattered memories. That being said, I like them all and will certainly buy this one too.

Unless they're putting the series back in the hands of the original SH team, I don't really see the point of getting excited over these people making the best Imitation SH2 they can muster.

Despite Silent Hill 4's focus on combat, I still found it to be exceptionally well done and well paced. The room was also an original sort of concept, and the storyline was downright terrifying.

@TheDreadFawk & Klarden Everyone is always hating 4. Glad to hear others enjoyed it! Creeped me out more than any of the others. I think the inclusion of the first person sections in the room (as well as the room's slow decay) really helped with immersion and tension.

Shattered Memories was awesome. I'd love to see more Silent Hill titles in that vein. But as far as the core series goes, this sounds promising.

Shattered Memories was good and definitly the best silent hill since 3 but it just wasn't scary.

Knowing when the enemies are going to attack ruined it a bit.

It's been a while since a really good shit-my-pants survival horror game came out.

In fact, I don't think I've played any this generation at all. There have been a lot of decent ones but most have been just blah.

The last series that actually creeped me the hell out was Fatal Frame, with FF2 being the scariest.

Play Penumbra -_- The last "brick-from-backside-generating" game i've played in the last few years. Amnesia is great and deserves all the love it's getting, but it's much more story-horror-survival oriented. Penumbra was survival-horror-story oriented

I wouldn't want them to remake Silent Hill 2. I think they need to consider the design of the original, not remake it, and move forward with that.

SH is still my favorite of the series. The second one was ok and then it was downhill from there.

2. Developers promise silent hill 2 is basis for new game
3. Game comes out to weak reviews and disappointment
4. Fans promise to never get excited about another silent hill game again!

how is it a positive thing that they aren't taking any inspiration from the film? the film is outstanding and considered a modern genre classic by many and easily the most respectful and well made video game adaption. i thought you were in the open minded Silent Hill crowd. or am I misinterpreting your mention of the film?

If Silent Hill was falling into the Sonic Cycle then Shattered Memories would not have been a well-made well-respected game, and it is.

The most important thing in SH franchise, at least for me, it's the story. Characters can be kind of obtuse (Harry, James, I'm looking at you guys) but if the story it's awesome then everything else can get some slack from the gamers. The story will make it or brake it, there's no way around it.

By the way I freaking loved the movie, I think it's one of the most decent game to movie adaptations there are there (and you know how those usually fare.)

I agree that shattered memories was a great game, I played it through but it essentially wasn't even really silent hill in so much that it was a complete reboot of the Harry Mason / Alessa story which did feel a little disappointing.

SH2 was the last major high point for the series (SH:The Room doesn't even count as it wasn't even supposed to be a SH game) which is nearly ten years old so hope is beginning to fade for me.

I'm just fearful of Yamaoka not being there. He was getting to be the soul of the series. I would have liked a female character this time or something, but if it's still taking a risk, then I guess it's worth cheering on.

@ Stevil

I can understand trying to replicate what worked in the past especially with a series like Silent Hill where the second installment released nearly 10 years ago is still the high point in the series. However it bothers me that in videogames developers seem to think we "want" to play the same thing we already played. I like similarities, and I don't think elements of a game should just fly out of left field, but some experimentation is not such a bad thing.

Videogames seem to be one of the only mediums I can think of where redundancy is rewarded. It's cool when a band tries something new, and no one wants to watch a movie that is exactly like something that came before it, but with videogames developers and a fair ammount of the community just want the same experience over and over.... it's enough to drive a once experimental and satisfying series like Silent Hill into the grave.

Can we get Climax doing an actual main series Silent Hill? Shattered Memories is actually my favourite Silent Hill since 4. It had a really fresh take on Silent Hill and it'd be way cool if they could take their vision to the HD consoles (not that there's anything wrong with the Wii).
And failing that, I want a sequel to Shattered Memories, dammit.

Shattered Memories is probably the best game in the series, despite it's flaws. It comes the closest to making Silent Hill what it's always supposed to have been... a (psychological horror) adventure game. I do hope combat is kept to a minimum in this game...

I agree completely.

The story has to be good. Thats actually the only way to take advantage of the atmosphere. Otherwise you're left with a cliche.... something like looks like it belongs in a marilyn manson video. If the imagery and sound doesn't resonate with the characters its no good. And if the characters don't resonate with the player its not even worth the effort.

I fucking hated Homecoming so much, how could anyone like that piece of shit? (no offense, but it was God awful), have still not got around to playing Shattered Memories, but I remain skeptical of it (ice otherworld?)

to me, the Silent Hill series is dead until I'm convinced otherwise, however hearing that "No inspiration comes from the film" (which was one of the major problems with Homecoming) and "They are working with key development members from the series" gives me a lot of hope, maybe Silent Hill will finally fucking get the current gen installment it deserves?

whoops, double post

anyway in case I haven't made it clear enough, I thought Homecoming was a bland, unscary piece of tripe with unimpressive graphics, a lame story and it amounted to little more than references to the movie and the other games in the series, I'm still bitter over it almost two years because I spent 60 bucks on it

the nicest things I can say about it is some of the music was good and it starts off promising (though quickly goes downhill

That's kind of the problem though, taking inspiration from previous entries doesn't exactly suit well for a series like Silent Hill where unorthodox progression is king. Perhaps they're saying this because they really just don't have the same type of understanding as the original team did because I'm pretty sure the debut trailer would have been done very differently then the traditional escapee running into something worst (you know, something more of the line of unique video of SH4).

I don't know, I miss the time where that mindset existed where showcasing a up close picture of a person's face smiling was considered "scary" (I'm referring to SH1's soundtrack cover).
