[Dtoider Y0j1mb0 adds to the Destructoid Monthly Musings theme. This Good Idea, Bad Idea focuses on brutal difficulty in games. Also, Battletoads made me break a controller.-- CTZ]

Game development is serious business. Not only do you have to try to create something unique or continue with an ongoing theme, but you have to make sure all of it comes together right. Be it concept, design, mood or playability. In my opinion, one of the core pieces in every game has got to be the fine-tuning of the game's difficulty. Its got to be like a tightrope balancing act that if it's game developers get right, will make the player feel challenged yet not frustrated. But done wrong, can cripple the experience for the gamer where he will feel overwhelmed and put the controller down.

Considering that most games nowadays are far too easy, I'll attempt to examine games that are an endangered bunch. Games tailored with an uncompromising brutal difficulty. These games look down on weakling gamers, fat off the grease filled easy games on the market today.

Below I'll try to examine both ends of the spectrum of brutal difficulty done right and wrong. Lets begin with a game with said difficulty done right.

Typically when a game whose difficulty is hard yet done right, you'll notice it will introduce you to its gameplay gingerly. It will show you what skills you have at hand while simultaneously giving you enough time to experiment and unleash these skills on weak NPCs. Making you feel powerful and also wanting more. This step is important because if this transitional period doesn't happen and your thrown to fend for yourself right away, frustration will creep in and the word "cheap" starts being thrown about.

Now that your acclimated with what you can do, this is where the game starts throwing you more. And not just more dumb NPCs to kill, the game makes them smarter. This requires you to switch tactics, forcing you to learn all your move sets and make you utilize all of them to succeed. Such as the case with Ninja Gaiden, whose difficulty is extremely hard. Brutal has been known to describe this game by some and is an example of a game done right. A game that adheres to the steps above.

Ask anybody who's played this Tecmo classic why this game is hard and I guarantee you the response wont have the word cheap in it. Oh sure, we might spout that off while knee deep in a boss battle or when them damn three ninjas drop down on you with your dwindling health, but all this game does is force you to use all at your disposal. Move, jump to the wall, throw your shurikens, lunge with your sword before you land, and roll your ninja butt out of the way of another attacker who was about to cleave you from behind.

So you think you got all this down? Your a super bad Ninja raining death at a blur but now comes the boss battles from the Planet Are You Kidding Me?! Just as you thought you were getting used to everything but the kitchen sink being thrown your way, the kitchen sink is thrown your way. "Game Over." What?! What just happened? You got owned, that's what happened. When you reflect on that, you realize yes ... yes I was. Then you take up the challenge again and you pick up the controller and learn from your mistake, if you're dedicated. If you're not, you don't pick up the controller and move on to a simpler affair like [insert game of ridicule here] and say the game sucks. But deep down, you know you suck.

Now let me try to examine a game with brutal difficulty done wrong.

I'm going to put my revisionist hat on and pull this "classic" out of the closet. Some of you are going to disagree about me picking Battletoads as being considered brutally difficult done wrong, but I'm going to have to stop that silly talk right here and now. This game is brutal not because the enemies are smart, that you're not doing your part by exercising all your moves, or by your lack of employing a sound strategy. No, in this game you can meet death just by entering the beginning of a stage and walking off the level to your doom all on the first level! Or those infamous obstacle courses you had to maneuver with your bike dodging cheap death after cheap death. There wasn't no gradual difficulty spike, no, no, no! We're talking masochist levels of pain and frustration.

Now before you sound off saying "this is a classic let's put this game in prospective", remember that there were few continues in this game and NO PASSWORD saves for multiple sessions to complete this game. It was a "complete me in one sitting or peace out" type of game.

The co-op, while fun, made the game even harder because you could smack your friend that your playing with upside the head easily and take him out of the game. Keep in mind you all shared those continues too. There was no turn the "friendly fire" off option here. And don't get me started if both of you were on those obstacle courses. If either he or you crashed then it was back to the beginning with you. It's like to pass the level, you had be synchronized riding bikers. To beat this game, you had to memorize everything that was going to come at you and have Bionic reflexes to even capitalize on that knowledge. I'm man enough to admit I didn't beat this game on my NES. I haven't met a soul in person who has. But that's not my gaming skills or lack thereof, I suppose. Anyway, this is a games' difficulty done wrong.

In closing, I love a HARD game. I wish there were more as the gaming landscape is barren of them. Just implement the good ideas that successful companies use to make the game hard and yes even brutal. Have it to if you lose, then there's no one to blame but yourself and not a game that's hard because of its broken mechanics.

I have such a love/hate relationship with Battletoads. Definitely one of those games that fools you by giving you an easy beginning, and then slams you with that goddamn bike jumping level.

I still own it. And it still mocks me, telling me how I need a friend to finish it and I'm a sissy-boy for not being able to do it solo.

Screw you, Battletoads.

No, wait, I didn't mean it. I'm sorry baby. Don't look at me like that...

Great post! I love this. I guess there is nothing I can say that hasnt been said. It just amazes me and frustrates me to no end when the higher difficulties equal "CHEAP" tactics by the AI.

Games that were hard but good hard. TG-16 shooters. After last weeks retroforce, I broke out my old games. R-Type, Blazing Lazers, Side-Arms, Magical Chase. All so good.

Ninja Gaiden was definitley hard, but beatable, it's nice to have a game everyone that is a serious challenge. Seperates the 1337 from the rest in a way. I am ready for Ninja Gaiden 2. I hear talk of a regenerating health bar.

Actually a recent game to be hard, but very fun is Trauma Center DS (Centre if your CDN). At least for me.

I know you can just use the dual stylus to be faster, but the game can (and i did) be cleared with a single stylus.

There is quite a gratifying ramp up in difficulty. It's certainly not impossible, but does require you to gain skills you've never had before to finish the game. I remember specifically learning to have a lighter touch with stylus just so i can ramp up my hand speed and not totally ruin my touch screen.

Then there are the X missions. It's really FUCKING hard to get these done. To the point where you have to pretty much relearn how to play the game AFTER you just finished the game. The whole grading systems is also good.... for telling you that you sucked, and could have done better even though you technically did succeed.

I think Trauma Centre would fall under the good idea category

Hard games are excellent for people (like myself) who want to feel some sort of acheivement when they beat a game on the hardest difficulty.

I remember playing Ninja Gaiden when I was like twelve or thirteen and just saying "FUCK THIS" at the first boss. Now that I've honed my ass-kicking skills (thanks to games like DMC and....DMC), and now that Ninja Gaiden Black is coming to XBL, I will totally be playing it.

Awesome post Y0j1mb0! I haven't been insanely furious at a game since I played DoA4 (more specifically, the last boss). Thanks to that cheap bitch, I now have two 360 controllers with split sides.

Great post, and great choice of games to illustrate your point. Ninja Gaiden is by far one of my favorite action games, and yes, I do think it is far superior to GoW.

People that claim NG is 'too hard' just want to mash the controller and make enemies disappear. I would say it has one of the most elegant and rewarding combat systems in any action game. In NG when you fuck up, it is your fault for not being on point.

SMB2 (the Japanese version) is also an excellent, but tough game. The controls are really tight, so you really have to know the subtle SMB moves to get through it.

Also, fuck Battletoads. Nice write-up.

Did you guys know that if you reached the area with the snakes in Battletoads in 2 player, the 2nd guy would be screwed? He would just die right there, no questions asked.

And my pick for hard difficulty done wrong is Call of Duty 4, hell every single Call of Duty deserves this title.

Enemies don't react in any different way, the only thing that's changed is that you have less health and tend to die in 3 hits(enemies shoot in 3 round bursts), enemies spawn forever till you dash forward against them and stop the spawn point, they have unlimited ammo, picture perfect aim even in the darkest of rooms and they throw frags with incredible grace.

I know several people who completed CoD4 on Veteran, all of them tell me they did because they got lucky on the harder battles, luck should never be a factor in games.

Anyone remember Mario Kart: Super Circuit? That game was awesome. The tougher circuits were tough as hell, but the game allowed you to set up a proper defense strategy, too: Nearly every item, even the mushroom, had some way to deflect projectiles, but the reason for that was that it was NEEDED. 150cc opponents would fire shell after shell at you, so if you wanted S ratings on each cup, you had to get to the front, be on the defensive constantly, get all the coins, AND get a good time on the courses. Tough, but the good kinda tough.

Great post, and I agree that theres a difference between a well-designed game thats hard, and a game that is difficult just because of poor design.

Where I have to disagree with you is on Battletoads. Don't get me wrong, it's by no means a perfect game. For one, to this day I don't understand how the combat mechanics work in the vertical levels. And the co-op is ass; you just end up killing each other more than anything, and the way the continues work is ridiculous. Aside from that, I don't feel the game had any major flaws that make it any more challenging than it was intended to be. There is no random element, it all comes down to your skills and/or learning/memorizing the levels.

You might hate the speeder level, but I fucking despise the 'timed' jump in the ice level.

Ninja Gaiden is a pain in the ass but do-able. I had to go and fucking look up maps just to make the bike level of Battletoads even remotely possible. "I want to be the guy" is just wrong that game could break even a veteran retro gamer... god it's so much fun

I really wish games at least had a hard difficulty alternative. Instead they give us "Hard Mode" which is usually about as easy as I would expect an Easy Mode to be.

I've played Ninja Gaiden and both Devil May Cry 1 and 3 to death. Their difficulty is unforgiving, absolutely, but it doesn't feel as mind-shattering as it really is for some reason. Now Gun Valkyrie on the other hand... Suffice to say it's been years since I've thrown a remote.

I'm absolutely with gideon on GOW and headshots: even if they're not humans, the standard enemies are humanoid enough not to be able to take a full clip of lead in the head without going down. That's cheap.

Brutal Difficulty Done Right: Ikaruga

This reincarnation of the classic 2D scrolling shooter turned the genre's trope on its ear by eliminating all power-ups but replacing it with the polarity element. There is ALWAYS a way to win even at the hardest difficulty level. You have to memorize patterns and time your motion and firing PERFECTLY but it CAN be done and when you pull it off it feels wonderful.

Brutal Difficulty Done Bad: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for Sega Game Gear. for God's sake I only made it to the second zone ONCE and even then I died immediately upon reaching it. The problem was the Game Gear's screen was too small and it made that boss fight impossible.

You need to learn grammar. When you're saying 'you are' you say 'you're', not 'your'. The plural of 'enemy' is 'enemies', not 'enemy's'.

honestly I like playing on an easier difficulty. This is due to the fact that I really just play the single player to get used to the controls then go online....hehehe
