Goldeneye: Source beta released photo

The long-awaited Source-based HL2 modification GoldenEye: Source was released in beta today to teeming throngs of Bond-hungry gamers. I haven't tried it yet -- the download mirrors are getting pounded, though the torrents seem to be chugging along just fine -- but word is the finished (or near-finished) product is pretty damn good.

A ground-up conversion of the classic N64 FPS, GoldenEye: Source looks to bring back the classic feeling of exchanging cheeto-stained high fives with your three friends huddled around the ol' 64 via classic Bond multiplayer beefed up with a modern engine. Word is that the recreation of the original Goldeneye's multiplayer gameplay has remained pretty faithful: all the classic maps and weapons are present and accounted for, and now allow for -- dig this -- more than four players!

Hey readers, any of you get your hands on this yet? Toss us a comment or two and let us know what you think.

Update: Yours truly just spent twenty minutes in the ol' Facility. My thoughts so far: a little rough around the edges, but a good start. Despite its flaws, it reinforces the hell out of my belief that first person shooters work best on a PC, or at the very least with a mouse and keyboard. I've never been quite this dangerous with the Golden Gun on an analog stick, that's for damn sure.

its only in beta now. What the fuck have they been doing? it was in alpha a year ago and it sucked balls. So two years after the project started and its only in beta, good work guys.

question. have they fixed the max character per level? cus when i played the alpha people would have 16 people on Stack and it was fucking retarded.

The thing i don't think they understand is that all of those levels are made for 4 player matches, you might be able to push it up to 6 on a couple of them but beyond that ruins the experience. I found myself being shot at as soon as i spawned in most of the levels.

upon further reading they haven't limited amount of people at all. They do suggest on their main page that 10 people per server works well. I still can't imaging 10 people working. Again, on some big maps but the game balance doesn't seem possible in my mind with that many people.

I am going to have to dl the game tomorrow or something to check it out just to see how unbalanced it is. Maybe i will be surprised. A good LAN game at the very least for an hour or so this weekend.

First off, WTF is up with jumping?

Second, why can you fall off the edge of walkways on some, but no others(like the original)

Third, it feels like golden eye

It was fun, still kind of choppy. I didn't find the RCP90, but i'll keep looking. It also uses some HL2 sound effects for things like weapon switching and explosions.

Yeah, 6-10 players can be abit too crowded for the maps only developed for a four player experience. Thats why I prefer CounterStrike servers, they provide you a much more expansive environment and control.

That game got me through some very dark hours in my life, and telling my friends to kiss my golden gun ass was the greatest fun on the N64 I ever had. I must have this source!

awesome! i agree that it could get crowded with that many people, so I'll probably download it with the roomates and we'll all play it together... since 2 of us prefer CS:Source and 2 of us prefer BF2... this can bring us together as one happy gaming family :D
