GoldenEye developer would love to see a VC release photo

While the rumors about GoldenEye 007 on Xbox Live Arcade have gone rather quiet lately, one man would really love to see the classic N64 shooter hit Nintendo's Virtual Console, despite accepting the fact that it will probably never happen.

"There's always someone with some exclusivity agreement, so there's lots of lawyers ... I'm not going to hold my breath," admits designer Martin Hollis. "I'd love it to happen, but I can't see it."

We all like to dump on licensed games for being rubbish, and most of them are. However, the GoldenEye debacle shows what happens when a licensed game turns out to be good and can't ever get a re-release thanks to so many hands being in the legal pot. This is why we'll never see any of those awesome old Aliens games appear on any download services, and that's a real tragedy.

In a way, licensed games being terrible are a sort of blessing. At least we'll never miss them.

The game does not hold up at all after all these years, I don't think I could bring myself to pick it up.

Update the controls, and I will give hand-jobs on the street to pay for this (figuratively).

i always hated this game. my friends all loved it but i thought it was terrible.

i only liked how in that one level called "facility" where you climbed thru the vents and you could throw a proximity mine on that soldiers head while he was sitting in the bathroom stall.

I don't understand why all the license holders can't just have money thrown at them. This game would sell like gangbusters if it were released on any system's downloadble service. I'd go as far as to call it a system seller.

@RAB

That part was the highlight for me, second level, right from the beginning. It was even cooler that you could shoot his hat off!

^Blasphemy. While I thought the single player was totally solid, the multiplayer is what made the game a classic. Between this and Smash Bros. there are few console games that I've put as many hours into playing with my siblings or friends.

My previous comment was aimed RAB, btw. The comment system needs an overhaul... or at least the ability to quote people with ease.

ROFL @ all these comments they're so funny...

As for Goldeneye on Xbox, MWAHAHAH I still have mine on my N64 suckaaaaas. Nah but seriously, I would C in my P if this happened and came to PSN also. It still is in my top ten games of all time, as it was my first N64 game that came with the console.

On the Millennium in 2000, me, my brother and my cousin stayed up from 7pm to 4am playing Goldeneye. That was our contribution to the Millennium :D

Once it's been seen, It cannot be unseen.

His hand makes it look like he's got a humongus extended mouth. Scroll back up and look at his mouth.

I'll post the pic someone made if it without the gun there if I can find it.

There are too many good RPG's yet to be released on VC for me to worry about a horrible FPS I never liked getting released. GoldenEye has always and will always be lame. I said it.

Come to think of it the N64 kind of blows in general.

As much as I loved this game when it came out, it really doesn't hold up too well. It introduced a lot of great ideas, but compared to shooters nowadays, there's nothing that it does that hasn't been done better.

@pendleton

I played this again at PAX with some CBM'ers. We had a blast playing it. I think it still holds up just fine as a FPS, if only the controls could be improved a bit it would be able to hang with more modern FPS.

I thing pendelton and Dip may be on to something. I've contemplated buying an N64 just so that I can play this game again, but without the memories, it probably isn't very special compared to the FPSers of today.

Try re-watching an 80's movie you always loved as a kid but haven't seen in 15-20 years. Man, I didn't realize The Last Starfighter/Flight of the Navigator/Short Circuit sucked so bad.

I should probably sell my N64 version of GoldenEye on Ebay since I never play it any more. It was a pretty good game before Hi-Def came along. It looks terrible on my HDTV. :(

I've played GoldenEye: Source. It's pretty fun. I played it about 8 months ago or so, when all that was available was one server and the level "Cradle". If the Dtoid community got together and played this a bunch, I might consider playing this online again. Any takers?

If Nintendo upscales the game and improves the controls I would buy it. But otherwise a ROM will do.
