GOG discounts almost 300 games, offers a freebie photo

Good Old Games has kicked off its holiday sale. Nearly 300 titles are marked down, some up to half off. More than anything else, this is another exercise in self control. Take a look for yourself.

They are also giving out Tyrian 2000 (pictured above) for free. If you have yet to use GOG, I recommend giving that one a download to see how the DRM-free service works. (Heads up, it works quite well.)

It's funny -- you think nothing of much value is releasing during December and you can finally be content with your huge backlog. While that first part is true, that's not taking into consideration the numerous digital sales. Add another game (or ten) to the pile of shame!

Damn you GOG! I visited your web site and I had 3 games in my cart in less than a minute. I don't need these games. I don't play my PC often. I between Steam and GOG I have a backlog of at least 30 games.

I am addicted to cheap games. I have a pile of 10 unplayed Dreamcast games I bought for $10 a piece when it was being phased out. I have 5 PS3 and 30 Xbox 360 games I have yet to play. I have a stack of original Xbox and PS2 games I have to get to. . .someday. I need help, and GOG isn't helping.

It never occurred to me that I would be able to use GOG to play old games on Windows 7 without having to jump through a bunch of hoops. There is a very good chance I will buy Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition for $3.

@Maeloch

I feel your pain, according to my backloggery account, there are 252 games that I have that I need to beat. And that's just counting current gen consoles and handhelds. On top of that there are at least 7 games in this sale that I want, basically all the D&D RPGs they have on there: Planescape, the Baldur's Gate games, the Icewind Dale games, Neverwinter Nights and Temple of Elemental Evil. Fuck my life.

GoG...didn't they die out earlier this year or something?

That said, I at least snagged Tyrian, though OpenTyrian has been around for a while too. I suppose I'll have to see what's different between the two.

Yeah, I was joking. I know the whole "well, we're closing up shop" thing was a PR stunt or just worded really badly, but yeah. From what I can tell, Tyrian2000 has a fifth episode and apparently a couple of extra features over OpenTyrian. I'm trying to figure out a way to keep the game from going fullscreen/small resolution, and I've not really done much with DOSbox to know any better. :P

This will make a pretty good gift to Dad, honestly.

I do wish GOG would pick up the pace a little. There are thousands upon thousands of games that I'd like to see on the service.
