God of War wants Dante's Inferno to provide a real threat photo

Its name might offend woolly liberals and book owls, but Electronic Arts is about to take on a far more deadly opponent -- Kratos himself. Speaking with VG247, God of War III's Stig Asmussen is looking forward to EA's literary sacrilege, expressing his hope that the game will provide stiff competition to his team's PS3 exclusive.

"Some of the guys who used to work on GoW are working on Dante’s," he states. "Really good guys. I hope they make a fantastic game that serves as good competition for us. I think using Dante’s Inferno as a theme could really cook into something special - it is a very rich world to draw from.

"As far as a threat to Kratos goes, I hope so. We need more great games in this genre."

That's a great attitude to have, and it's always fun to see a studio embrace friendly rivalry rather than produce the mean-spirited trash talk we see so much in the industry. Hopefully EA responds well to the thrown gauntlet and the two studios use each other as spurs to create a pair of excellent action games.

I am really looking forward to both these games, and talk like this only raises my expectations.

Meanwhile, Dante and Vergil swoop in... kill both these franchises... and go eat breakfast.

Kudos to Stig. That's an awesome way to look at things. If he sees potential in Dante's Inferno, it's on my radar officially

Awesome. But I don't have a PS3, so it doesn't really affect me much. Oh well, still cool.

More people need to be like this in the world.

HA HA HA!!! Ohhh you only wish SephirothX, you only wish Dante and Vergil could add up to half a man that Kratos is.

Take notes, Activision: this is how you should respond when people who helped create your popular series go make a similar game with a competing publisher. You know, instead of getting all snippy and calling the new game a rip-off.

Wow, thats refreshing to see talk like this regarding direct competition. I think it's interesting that he mentions how former GoW team members are working on Dante's Inferno. It could make for a better game than I originally thought.

Big ups to Stig.

Any person with a Scandinavian name sounds like they could a bloodthirsty viking. So that's cool.

GOW3 will have an upper hand when it's released either way even if Dante is released with great reviews. Say you have a PS3 and see both games on the shelf. I know I would go for GOW3 first just because of what the previous games have been. The easy way out is to take the high road.

So, does Dante get to make witty political social commentary about life while he's killing demons and stuff?

Maybe the industry will learn a thing or two from this...

If Dante's Inferno manages to be on par with God of War 2, heck..God of War 1...heck...Chains of Olympus...it'll be purchased day one. Needless to say, GoW3 will QTE my wallet the day it comes out.

Mutual respect is something very welcome in today's world. There's too much divisiveness going on between rival corporations, political parties, and even fanbases, and all the mud-slinging and damage control is just so tiring to hear. Props to Stig, and I'm definitely keeping my eye on Dante's Inferno and hoping the greatness from Dead Space is not lost.

Good for them.

Rivalry is a great way to get better. I'm talking this cool kind of rivalry, not bitching rivalry.

[Music : Schaffer / Lyrics : Schaffer]

Through the fiery caverns we sail
Virgil at my side my guide and master
Questing through the nine plains of hell
Infernal wisdom shall fill my soul
Slowly now the days departing
The darkened air releases me
Frightening visions of my journey
Entrance me to limbo I'm not afraid!

Abandon all hope who enter here
Enter the gates, Charon awaits

Abandon all hope who enter here
For this is where all things are left behind
Every doubt and every cowardice must die
Souls of rage and anger whipping in despair

The souls that wail on this plain pray for death
Denial is the reason for their suffering
Forever being stung by wasps and demons breath
The blood and tears that fall serve the maggots need

Descention, thrusting to the second plane
Minos judges as his tail twines
Lustful thoughts and greed whip these wretched souls
A hurricane of hate mocks their helpless pleas

Drifting now down deeper, into eternal flames
Awake at the third circle, the cold and filthy rain
Punished for their gluttony, languid for all time
The earth it stinks of corpses, damned for all time
The vicious beast Cerebus, three heads, blooded eyes
Tears his talons through the air, all the sinners cry now
All the sinners cry

Down, be still thy cursed wolf
The master scorns its name
Dive to the next plane
The sullen and the vain
Suffer for greed
The prodigal they bleed
For all eternity
Plutus holds the key

Damned, the wrathful and the vain
Suffer the fifth plane
Cross the river Styx
Heed your crucifix
The muddied corpses cry
Howling to the sky
Reach the other side
Open wide the gate

Enter the sixth circle of barren land and flames
Passing through the gate of Dis the furies scream her name
Belching forth in agony invoking her to rise
The spirit's rage consuming us the evil in their cries
Queen of vipers, queen of serpents
Cast their souls to stone
Spread to wealth of Gorgon's power
Medusa's inner soul

We're drawing ever closer to the seventh hell
They violate their neighbors, their god and themselves
We're sailing slowly through the boiling river of blood
Immersed in the depths below souls scream in agony
The twisted beast he laughs, he draws his arrow back
His sights on anyone exposing of their flesh
He impales their hearts with ease
And shrugs their piercing screams
Pity is they'll never die
They'll suffer here eternally

Imagine a place where every horror comes to life
Where every torture is real and time stands still
Eight fiery steps and we're closer to the end

In a cold and timeless grave buried head first in shit
Praying all the while for a quick and painless death
Scratching furiously at scabbed and oozing wounds

Lucifer ... angel of light
Cast below god of ice
Ruling hell unholy trinity
The traitors freeze for all eternity
Lucifer ... betrayer of god
Tormentor ruthless and cold
Judas' screaming here in agony
The traitors freeze for all eternity

I'm reading through the Divine Comedy right now (well..not RIGHT now...I'm typing), and I'm really looking forward to Dante's Inferno coming to the 360. Can't wait to play.

The source material is more appealing to me than the Greek and Roman stuff from GOW.
