Now that you've had an opportunity to read Nick's impressions of how God of War III is shaping up, have a look at the trailer Sony has released today. It's all FMV footage, but it still gets me pumped to have Kratos' blades back under my control.

The title's director, Stig Asmussen, commented before showing the video at this week's media event that this was "100% real." There's no post-editing trickery being performed, rather the game's "engine spitting out raw frames." These are actual in-game elements running in their native resolution. Asmussen claims that it's possible to "drop Kratos into these levels and do all of the stuff that's happening here now."

Goddamn. That's really all I can say about it. I'm sure the rest of you can be more verbose on the subject, though. What do you think of the trailer?

**Update** - Trailer is actually post-jump now, to keep the ESRB and publishers happy. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I highly suggest playing the first 2. They are hella cheap these days, and it will get you up to speed on the entire story arc. Not to mention they are both just great games.

Hmmmm....Kratos uses a Spidey-web-zipline move and has Hulk-crushed-car smash fists? Yeah, Kratos' presentation of these moves may be slightly (barely im) different but the "already done" similarities are unavoidable. Were these features always a part of his moves set? I have no clue because I’ve never played GoW and would like some informed opinion.

I am definitely seeing the influence of other action games in this title. Which isn’t a terrible thing I guess… But with all the worship this game and team has received over the years…I just kinda thought we would see something new and original. I have sinking feeling that Darksiders may end being what everyone wanted God o War III to be....

I am sure my assessment of the game play hints found in this trailer will draw fire from the religious God of War sect, but the seeming lack of original moves is troubling to me. If the “moves-well” has run dry for God of War, then THQ's Darksiders stands a good chance of dethroning the fan favorite.

Gamera: Darksiders? THQ you say? When's the last time they made a decent game?

I'm extremely tired of all this bullshit about games not being fresh or original enough. It's a fucking violent action game, how original can it be?

As a die-hard God of War fan, this is very exciting for me. Hopefully you'll enjoy it yourself when it comes out.

MATHEMATICAL!! I've always been glad that the God of War games get the praise they deserve. They're not insanely overrated like most mainstream action titles and show a genuine degree of talent in it's development team. I'm sure this game will be just as great as the last 3 and I'm excited to play it.

I didn't know skeletal undead could bleed so much!

It might just be me (actually, I'm pretty sure it's just me here) but it sounds like they are quoting Nikos Kazantzakis in the second half. “I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free.” Sure, Kratos doesn't say "I am free", but I'm not someone to argue with a Spartan general/former member of the Greek pantheon/soon-to-be patricider over such a petty thing as words.

@GameraTheGreat

The GoW games are pretty awesome, I'd recommend picking up the first or second one (probably for less than 10 bucks now?) and checking them out for yourself.

All aspects of the games (GoW1 & 2) are extremely polished. The fighting is really fluid and entertaining. It may get a little repetitive for some, but I think the story is really interesting and that makes you want to keep playing. Also, the sheer scale of bosses, enemies and environments you are in is on a whole different level (see what I did there?!).

I think if I had not played the first two, I would be skeptical about part 3. It's always hard to judge a game by the trailer alone anyways ie Ass Creed looked amazing to me. However, I feel like these games are at the apex of their genre. They definitely have similarities to others games like DMC or Ninja Gaiden, but I feel like they simply do it MUCH better.

I know you want to simply attack, but really....tell me how Spidey and the Hulk ended up in GoW? We aren't talking about a left hook or a foot stomp....we're talking about signature moves developed for specific characters. Kratos is Spiderman now and he needs super-boxing gauntlets?

As far as you being "sick"....I'm just asking a question. There's no need to get your thong in a twist. I can't simply ask a question on a gaming news site? Has Destructoid become the republican gaming channel?

THQ made the Punisher, which was surprisingly good and they have been developing better games ever since (Conan had flaws but it was a sound game). They are also handling Red Faction which also looks promising, but you might have missed that by being a die-hard GoW fan and all.

Instead spouting angry talk at me, why not answer my question. Are these moves he had before? If not, do you agree that the moves are way similar to the Spidey and the Hulk?

Uhhh thanks for the recommendation...you should play Otogi if you haven't already.

I don't think hacknslash or beatemups have reached their zenith. Maybe as a GoW you think so, but I disagree. I think when you hold any one game in high estimation one can feel this way. Being a virtua fan, I made little room for other fighters. I still love virtua, but I have also learned the lesson of keeping an open mind.

You didn't answer my question either. You've played GoW....are these new moves? Hulk smash fists, Spidey webline, and the Pursian wall run? Just asking....

Haha! Thanks man, he attacked me once before! Look, I am not trying to troll....this is one of three games that may make me get a Ps3 (DCU, Infamous, and GoWIII), but if it simply has moves that were done better in other games....well, then Infamous and DCU will have to be stellar in order for me to cough up the funds...

Well, aside from all the damn advertisements popping up during it, that was an extremely impressive video.

I should really give the first two games a try again. I was never able to get into them --- I ended up forcing myself to play the first one, and I didn't really enjoy myself. I'm Greek, you'd think that'd help, but I guess not.

Haha I am working/multitasking so I'm sorry about the incoherent ramblings.

Are you speaking in terms as new moves to the series? The goofy spidey line has always been there.. the gloves were similar to those in Chains of Olympus.. The wall-run is new to the series.

Apex was too strong of a term. I meant that I think it's one of the better in the genre. I love hack n slash games!

Ok...at least the moves have been there. Well, if this game is good I may track down a back-compat Ps3 to play the originals....defeats the point of waiting for a price cut but if I like a game....well, it can get ugly.

Play both Otogi games...fans claim that the first was better, but this is one fan that thinks 2 provided more bang for the buck!

Did these 2 guys just say I'm some kind of fanboy? WTF?

Gamera:

SephirothX has a serious problem with not allowing others to have their own opinion. He continually comments and comments until he feels you agree with his views.

Now, as for the moves, Kratos did have some sort of punching glove type thingy in the PSP game, if I remember correctly. As for the zip line type thing, I don't recall him doing that before.

But even so, what do you expect? Every game, especially sequels, to reinvent the wheel completely? To never borrow or be inspired by something else, even if it makes the game better?

I'm not attacking you. I even said I hope you enjoy the game when you play it. SephirothX just seems to disagree with me on everything. He accuses me of being some sort of fanboy who doesn't appreciate other people's opinions, but this is the guy who refuses to let me love the RE5 demo regardless of how much it's a direct copy of RE4. He doesn't understand that other people have their own opinions.

And as for it sounding like an attack, I just get pissed because I see this shit a lot, specifically from SephirothX, about games not bringing anything new to the table.

WTF do you expect? It's a sequel. If it aint broke, don't fix it, am I right?

I'm usually a pretty nice guy and it seems a lot of people read and like my blog, so I don't see where he gets these ideas from.

Well first off this trailer and this game look fucking amazing, Im getting this hands down and hopefully it will come in Special edition cause Ill get that. But some of the comments I've read here sound very familiar to some of the complaints I've read about RE5. Everyone is entitled to there opinion, even if it does happen to piss you off. But where making these assumptions on trailers and demos wait till the game comes out, play it and then you will get a better understanding of the game which could support your opinion depending on what it is.

Hmmm....sounds like these moves were added after Hulk Ultimate destruction and Web of Shadows...too bad people don't give those games more fanfare.

I have no problem with inspiration....it's just that people very much like yourself (or at least how you seemed in your post) have heaped a shitload of accolades on this game and this team. Going as far as to bash other games (Beowulf and Conan - good games in their right) for being too similar to GoW.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery, but outright copying or retooling move sets from other games usually draws criticism. Why can GoW so obviously imitate other games but not receive any of the flack it's very own fans have levied at titles like Conan and Beowulf? This seems unfair and quite bias to trend and popularity....not good for games as a whole.

By the way....I didn't say anything about you being a fanboy...nor did question your popularity (congrats on being well liked) on the school yard...you defined yourself as "a die hard GoW fan".
EternalDeathSlayer's Avatar - Comment posted on 02/13/2009 14:07

@ Gamera: Conan and Beowulf never did anything to set themselves apart, like the God of War series did when it was first introduced. Besides this, they aren't very well designed or polished games. If you want to borrow elements from other games or other media, you had better do things right.

If a game is poorly made, it will come off as a cheap rip off. And Beowulf was poorly made. Can't say much for Conan, but it seems extremely generic in pics and videos.

The reason God of War can do whatever it wants? Because it's arguably the greatest 3D action series ever created. It's called respect.

Yeah, I wish they had left out the wall run and that they had left the web-lining and smash fisting to Spidey and the Hulk. But, if GoW III lives up to the billing and Darksiders falls short (doubtful as it look really good)and I absolutely need some Kratos mayhem...I will pony up for the original price. Sony should have known from the get go that games will move wallets....not movies or surfing the net.
