God of War III 'only possible on PS3' photo

Oh for f*ck's sake. It's like clockwork. A big PS3 exclusive comes along, and the developer pretends that it could only be possible on the PlayStation 3. Right on schedule, here's product manager Claire Backhouse, claiming that God of War III could never appear on any other system ever, because the PS3 is made out of spider's webs and magic.

"The developers have worked hard to use the power of the PS3 to make GOW3 look amazing and have added features that are only possible with PS3," says Backhouse, with perfect PR grace. "The dynamic lighting solution employed in GOW III is only feasible through the computing power provided by the Cell SPUs.

"For example, using the High Dynamic Range Lighting (HDRL) technology, the camera -- when using Krato's sightline -- will emulate the human retina, causing players to feel a sharp brightness when Kratos exits a dark area and enters a sunlit area, similar to how the human eye would need to adjust."

I'm not denying that the PS3 is a powerful system -- it's a heavy duty piece of kit and I respect that. However, I'm still yet to see a game that could "only" be done on the PlayStation 3, and the claims have lost all meaning since almost every exclusive developer seems to say it at least once. Is it in their contract or something? Does Sony legally force developers to spout that same bullsh*t at least once?

Killzone 2, Heavy Rain and Uncharted 2 are all games that could "only" be possible on the PlayStation 3. When you see how long and how often these claims have been kept up, it looks just a little bit ridiculous. Give me a bloody break.

Besides, I bet a PC could do all of these games better.

Right... this person does realize HDR Lighting has been around long before the PS3 came along. Hell the effect she is talking about can be achieved with bloom.

It's called business, sir. And if you'd like to devote a blog to all the companies that toot their horns every 5 seconds telling you their product is the better than the competition...well, you should probably get on that because you'll probably die before you finish.

Hrmm.

I agree with you Jim that these games could appear on other consoles, Like the 360. Though I doubt they would look as pretty.

Also wouldn't it cost more money to develop a game for ps3 and 360 due to how they both have completely different processing technology and so by focusing on the PS3, we get one good game or well made game. Instead of two mediocre games.

So yes, these ITCOULDONLYONSONYSCONSOLELOLOLOL comments are annoying and complete bullshit. But what do you expect, part of learning to use the PS3 SDK is being brainwashed, which explains all of the poor ports to the console as developers often skip that most important chapter that makes games so amazing.

Well i'm sure that the target of graphical fedelity that some of these exclusives are reaching can only be done on the ps3 (compared to the 360). Of course some of these features could be scaled back (thus changing it) and ported down to the 360. Or yeah, you could just put it on PC and it might even look and run better.

Sony invented consoles and the developer who makes GOW invented games so this is always true: We all know Sony is almighty and omnipotent. Could Sony create a product so popular Sony could not create any other product to match it?

In terms of graphical power, I can't really see much of a difference between the two consoles anymore. I mean, MW2 on 360 looks just as good as anything on PS3, Uncharted 2 on PS3 looks just as good as anything on 360. It's not like the early 90's when SNES and Genesis were out and the SNES was miles ahead of Genesis graphically due to a way higher color palette.

I haven't seen GoW3 in action yet, but I'd bet the 360 could probably handle it at least to the point where it's indistinguishable to a normal person (i.e. someone not looking for every flaw possible)

You know, there was another game that emulated "the human retina, causing players to feel a sharp brightness when [the character] exits a dark area and enters a sunlit area, similar to how the human eye would need to adjust".... it's called Shadow of The Colossus, and it didn't need a convolutedly designed chip and an overpriced console to do that.

I love my PS3, but these e-penis boasting competitions are just sickening.

Meanwhile, a little gem with no self-shadowing and very basic texture mapping by the name of Demon's Souls, has managed to keep me glued to the gaming chair in ways Uncharted 2 couldn't.

If RE4 could go from the game cube to the PS2 then GoW3 could go from the PS3 to the 360.

"Uncharted 2 on PS3 looks just as good as anything on 360."

Mehhh. Not to start a fanboy war or anything, but I very much disagree. After playing my 360 for like a week straight(Mw2, L4D2, Gears 2, Gay Tony) and then going back yesterday and playing Uncharted 2 the graphics still blow me away even though I've beaten the game 3 times now. There isn't another game out there that can do that for me.

METAL GEAR can only be possible on--oh wait
GRAND THEFT AUTO can only be possible on--oh wait
FINAL FANTASY can only be possible on--oh wait, am I doing this right?

Besides, from playing the GoW3 demo that came with District 9 and after playing the Dante's Inferno demo, I can see that nothing like GoW3 could POSSIBLY be done on another console! /sarcasm.

Also, GoW3 demo is bright as shit, don't tell me that's an actual selling point? HDR was hot shit back when VALVe did it in 2004, thanks.

District 9 Blu-ray is only possible on the PS3.

Honestly usually the REAL reason they can "only be on PS3" is because they include high-res, pre-rendered cutscenes, which would fill up multiple DVDs but can fit on one Blu-Ray. That was the reason Resistance 1 could "only be on PS3."

Pretty sure the real reason GoW3 can only be on PS3 is the same reason Halo can only be on Xbox: It's owned by the console's parent company. Durrrr.

And it's still not possible for consoles to replicate Crysis' graphics on highest settings. So the PC's trump card surpasses PS3's trump card, meaning the PC is technically superior still.

The fact that PC hardware could be more powerful is irrelevant considering the best games are made by Sony. Maybe it can't only be done on PS3, but it will only be done on PS3.

Careful, all the ps3 fanboys are going to be butthurt by this article. It is bullshit they are slewing though, if they wanted to do a port to the 360 they could. A company shouldn't have to justify why they are only doing a title exclusively though, which is where the real problem is

The developers probably have less experience working with the PS3 and so do a worse job on it, so you can blame the devs.

The game could certainly be done on the X360, but he graphics would suffer greatly.

A highish end PC could certainly do the graphics if properly programmed.

Claiming a video game "emulates the human retina" is the new standard for video game marketing hyperbole.....

really, I loves me some pretty graphics, and I do like killzone 2, uncharted 2, and all those pretty exclusives. But yes, if they were willing to make concessions they could port em. Maybe a little less pretty, maybe a second disc. But I'm sure if I only had a 360 I'd be happy with that. I mean, if I could get a port of Alan Wake, and the only drawback was because of its 360 focused development I got a slightly less stable framerate I could dig it.

Sigh. My ps3 gets me along, but I still wish I could have both. And I actually do wish everyone could have a play of mgs4. Just because its epic.

Shit like this insults people's intelligence. The day both systems came out PC's were superior graphically so what makes you think 3 years later this shit can only be done on the PS3? I own a PS3, not a 360, but all this is crap. Is the PS3 "technically" the more powerful system? Of course, no one is disputing that, but besides storage limitations, the 360 has shown to be just as formidable. Maybe you can blame lazy software developers, or even lazy hardware developers in Sony's case for making the system difficult to program for but the bottom line is both of these consoles look like crap compared to a PC. After player Modern Warfare 2 and Prince of Persia on my PC and seeing them both on my PS3 literally at the same time its painfully obvious that neither system can pump out a respectable resolution to make these games look amazing anymore, especially blown up on a bigger television screen. You can spend 80 bucks on a video card that can pump out better visuals than what either system can do. Best believe that!

Are people actually impressed by the GoW E3 demo? I mean I haven't played GoW since I beat part 1, but it was just 'OK' to me. The HDR/Bloom on Helios was BLINDING, not to mention he looked like a big orange blur when on his chariot. It looked like graphics were sacrificed for gameplay(which is how it should be, btw) so I don't see the 'Zomg its super graphical!'

Playing on a 1080 resolution / HDMI. Fyi.

God of War is only possible with the power of the PS3, or PSP , because we own it - Sony

just like Nintendo own the right to making platform jumping not floaty or crap.

and I guess Microsoft own the exclusive rights to ship their gaming console with a cheap headset so that you can actually use their onlne service to play in teams...
