Thankfully the Gods of Media Storage did not abandon Sony Santa Monica in its quest to create God of War III.
According to Sony Santa Monica's director of technology Tim Moss, the upcoming sequel will take up 35 gigs on the Blu-ray disc it ships on.
"Thank heavens for Dual Layer Blu-rays," he wrote on Twitter.
35 gigs is a fraction of what a dual-layer Blu-ray disc can hold, which theoretically can store anywhere between 50 and 100 gigs of data. No word on how many gigs of that data (if any) will be installed to your PlayStation 3 hard drive, but we'll find out soon enough -- God of War III has gone gold, and will be available at retail on March 16.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
QTEs take up a lot of space these days, I guess.
lol
I lol'd.
Fit 35 GB of cutscenes on there, and then we'll talk.
I want a full 10 hours of cutscenes. THAT IS THE FUTURE.
Kojima was hurted by your wordz.
I'm the guy who didn't mind the 1 cutscene in MGS4.
I'm also kidding, 10 hours is a bit overkill. I'd settle for 8.
Team Ninja is PLEASED BY THIS DEVELOPMENT.
I think we can all agree that blu-ray is the future of movies and gaming. DVD had it's day and it's now relegated to history.
No amount of jokes and jives will change that, but it may make you feel better about your cheap little DVD console.
You guys are a bunch of jive turkeys.
Not usually one hate on the 360 but its definitely becoming a big flaw.
Just for you to know, MGS4 used 28g's data.
Just for you to know they are not pre-rendered. All real time generated.
Tell me you did NOT just say Jive Turkey!
You see, there is this beautiful game that is able to run WITHOUT an install. It's called Uncharted 2. There's also another one called Final Fantasy XIII.
amen

I'm surprised PCs don't have mandatory blu-ray drives now-a-days, as I'm pretty sure in a year or so most games will start shipping on the things.
Then again, it did take DVDs a long time to pick up.
I also wonder how the Xbox is going to handle this issue, especially if they aren't releasing a new system alongside Natal. While I can understand that currently it isn't too huge an issue (verses the whole FFXIII graphics compression thing), given a few years they'll need a new format for their games if they don't plan on releasing them all with a bajillion discs.
And it probably IS pre-rendered cutscenes, because those are what take up the most space on DVD/Blu-Rays. The reason Lost Odyssey was four discs and Mass Effect 2 was only two is because the majority of ME2's cutscenes were in-engine, while LO's were high-def movies, which eat up DVD space like a fat kid in a doughnut shop. That's also why people can get away with saying "Resistance could only be done on the PS3," because the cutscenes that appear in-engine are actually high-def movies, which take up tons of space on the Blu-Ray. Not hatin, just sayin.
Either way, will be getting this game launch day. March can't come soon enough.
