God of War III director talks SIXAXIS support, future DLC photo

Given the choice, would you choose to tear of Helios head in God of War III (pictured above) by shaking your controller? According to the game's director, Stig Asmussen, that's something you just might get to do when the game ships for PlayStation 3 next March.

"We're not currently using it," he told GamePro about the PS3 controller's SIXAXIS support, "but that doesn't mean we won't get something in there by the time it ships. I can see a lot of different uses for it."

Assumussen assures it won't be used for balancing on beams or anything, but uses the example of shaking the controller to yank of Helio's head.

As for the future of the game via downloadable content, Asmussen says that it "would make a last of sense" to be able to download additional challenge rooms. In previous games, a number of challenge rooms shipped on the disc; with DLC, Asmussen feels it could be "a good way to keep the series going."

I'm definitely anti-motion controls in God of War 3, unless it's something minor like how it was used in Heavenly Sword. The game simply doesn't need it. I still reserve the right to completely change my opinion if they come up with something cool, though. Also, Asmussen is a hilarious name.

The Sixaxis motion control is kind of awful in any game that uses it. Why would I want to have to flail around to do stuff in game? It's not fun; it's horribly frustrating IMO. Not to mention how unresponsive the controller's motion sensing is. I'm not against motion control in games, but either be the Wii (or Project Natal) or don't; half-assed attempts to integrate it are an exercise in frustration.

Alright time to announce DLC that "can't fit on the disk" bullshit now before they get further into development when it might actually sound reasonable. They claim that DLC is handled by different departments but thats bull too because if your planning a game from day one with DLC then you won't put that time into the project, you'll say "oh we don't need time for that make it DLC and make them pay for each challenge room, you know they will". DLC announcements are becoming worse and worse as in the Borderlands pre-release DLC announcement, of course it was too late for them to press it on the disk last week but come on let the frigging product get released before you let us know what great ideas fit your final product but you tossed into a separate team to make MORE money.

"We're not currently using it,"

So what he's saying is with less then a year left in development there's no way it'll be anything other then a gimmick.

I completely understand everyone's gripes about DLC being announced before the game is even finished. At the same time, I'm the kind of guy who will buy a game, play it non-stop until I've worn it out, and then sell it to a friend or trade it in if I don't know for a fact that there's some DLC coming down the line that's worth keeping the game for. The companies want us to hold on to those games, so that the next person has to buy a new copy instead of my used one.

I'm as against withholding game content from the retail copy in order to make more money from DLC as anyone, but I also see why developers would want their customers to know that there will be benefits to keeping that shiny new game they just bought instead of sending it into the secondhand market.

I do not mind shaking my controller rather than mashing a button, but I think if SCEA are going to include such a mechanic they should make it optional, that way no-one can moan about the game having "stupid motion control."

as messed up as it sounds. I'd like to do more of a twisting motion then anything.

I wanna feel like I'm yanking his head off, not just shake around and see LOL POP GOES HELIOS.

id rather use six axis then mess up my control buttons by constantly rolling the analog or pushing on the buttons repetedly

The only reason I don't prefer a Wii is because of the control shaking gimmick (OK and because it has NO games) so there is absolutely no reason for me to want/enjoy more waggling gimmicks with PS3 games. I hope it's an optional feature so I can keep it off.

If you were shaking Helios to and fro in order to dislodge his head from his neck, then I can see shaking the controller, however, in this case, I think a simple upward yank of the controller at the very end of the button mashing sequence in order to remove said fellow's head would suffice.

Not a big fan of motion controls in general, but I must say, thinking about my brilliant suggestion there, I actually kinda like the idea. That one, anyway.

i would use the shaking if it means grabbing and smashing a face multiple times into the ground. that would feel good.

but you can't use it while chaining combos. it could only work when grabbing someone.

I don't think I'd like that very much. It reminds me of my ill-fated decision to buy Lair (post analog stick patch). You had to shake the controller to do some moves with the dragons and it sucked. I never got it right and the game never seemed to pick up the movements properly.

Granted, GoW III might be a little more polished than Lair, but still...

I liked motion control in the following games: Killzone 2, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted 1 (Yes, I liked balancing and grenade tossing, and would have liked them to employ it in valve turning sections).

I am weird.

If I could choose, a movement that sort of simulates the animation, would be nice. Violently shaking the controller around randomly, not so much... Pulling the controller upwards in some manner is acceptable :)

I wouldn't mind the shaking inplace of the button sequences. It surely wouldn't work with all of them, but the less the merrier.

i may be one of the few, but i enjoy well implemented sixaxis controls. Warhawk, killzone 2 and socom come to mind.

Leaning, sniper fine aim, flying, turning wheels etc all fit the sixaxis, not a fan of the shaking so much.

Oh yeah, ragdoll kung fu uses it well.

i have to agree with mackie junior, the motion controller really doesnt play an important role in any ps3 game i've ever played. in KZ2 turning valves and placing explosives. but yeah... useless.

Actually the integration of sixaxis in Killzone 2, specifically with the steadiness and position of the scope when sniping...it's spot on.

I'm also a big fan of the Aftertouch effect in Heavenly Sword that utilized sixaxis.

There have been implementations of sixaxis that were certainly painfully crappy, but I liked it in those two instances.

As long as I have the option to have it on or off then it's fine with me. It's when the option isn't there to turn it on or off do I get upset.

Exactly Corak, either they give us the option to turn it on/off or they just stick to their old button-mashing system.
At first I didn't like mashing the circle-button to open doors etc. back then.. but now, it's stuck in my head as an established part of God of War.
