There's not much to say about the God of War Collection that hasn't already been said about the two games -- God of War and God of War II -- that will ship as part of this single Blu-ray Disc collection. The games are both amazing, and on a personal level, two of my favorite videogames ever. Yes, I'm a God of War fanboy -- I admit it.
So outside of the games themselves, here's what you have to look forward to when the game ships this November. 2X anti-aliased graphics, Trophies, and 720p resolution, all at 60 frames per second. Basically, it's the sexiest the original games have ever looked, and that's saying a lot, since the original games looked pretty damned good on PlayStation 2 hardware. The bottom line is, if you loved the originals, you'll love these. If you didn't, fancy upgrades probably won't change your mind.
The game will also include that voucher for the God of War III demo that should be available before the year's end, which basically makes this a must-have for God of War fans. Like me. Gimme now, Sony. (P.S. Nice new logo, Sony Santa Monica.)
@TheBigFeel They don't look stretched to me, if it were stretch the up-scaling wouldn't help the AA. It does however looked to be over lapped by (redoing the original) which isn't much better.
Also I'm glad they finally came out with this I could never get into the original because of the PS2 underwhelming look on it, since at the time I was plowing into higher and higher PC specs and the PS3.
Are you serious? QTEs are an incredibly small fraction of this utterly amazing action series. That's like saying "Waggle + any game, really = FAIL". What if the waggle is minimal? I'd say for each game, out of the 12 hours of gameplay, there's about 15 minutes of QTE sequences. Your loss.
They're annoying as hell no matter how infrequent. Granted, I'll take minimal QTEs over stupidity like "Bionic Commando" with no manual saves and pathetically vast distances between save points. But there are too many games out there (and coming out in the next few months) that don't use QTEs at all that are deserving of my purchase dollars.
like heavy rain John? every dam game uses QTEs. just the majority make you think you're in control and you don't see any buttons on screen. mario jumping=QTE. firing a gun using shoulder button when enemies come around a corner=QTE. hitting X to open a door or pick up an item=QTE. guitar hero, hero titles, rock bands=one giant music filled QTE. open your eyes and you'll see every game except seaman uses them. and for that, seaman wins. also, cocks!
Yeah, yeah, I knew that someone would try to come up with that excuse that every button press is a QTE, which as far as I'm concerned is a total straw man argument. With regular gameplay you're not locked into a scenario where you are given a specific sequence exactly when the game says or else you fail the whole sequence, so your example is not analogous.
@TheBigFeel I totally noticed that and I was hoping my eyes were just playing tricks. All of the graphics for the QTEs looked like ovals instead of circles, and the HUD graphics looked stretched out, too. :(
Also, the game has aged surprisingly well, especially since the PS2 was easily the weakest of last-gen systems.
Well...ok, God of War 1's sprites are pretty fugly, but God of War 2 still looks real good.
Maybe I'm just spoiled from watching the God of War 3 videos to many times, but I still think this has aged quite well. And for $40, that's a great deal.
Why? 1080i is an inferior resolution compared to 720p, anyone running 1080i when there tv supports 720p is only hurting themselves. Just because the number is larger doesn't mean it's better, interlaced fucking sucks, unless you enjoy screen tearing, and garbled fast moving images.
Wow, that shit is fucking epic. If I can ignore every fan aspect of owning a PS3, I might just grab one to have this part of my collection. Epic sweetness, man.
What's with Kratos' jaws, though? Are they extended outward to make more room for consuming large pieces of flesh?
Man, I miss GOW2. My copy borked on me. And I traded me Chains of Olympus for Disgaea DS. Loved the trade but I miss it sometimes. Good thing there's a "Platinum Hits" version of that one. So, how much for that collection again?
How are Ninja Gaiden Sigma I and II in 1080p at 60fps while God of War, with the same old budget-ass PS2 graphics, isn't? Like actually, curiosity. Why. The PS3 could run a million instances of GOW at a time.
Also: I'm pre-ordering the shit out of this. I've been waiting to play these games forever and an updated 720p 60fps version is a gift from, well... the gods. Now i just need ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, and MGS Snake Eater and i'll no longer feel like shit for never owning a PS2.
Because 1080i has by far the wider adoption rate in HDTVs. For a long time, 720p was not available. My tv (ironically, a Sony) is 1080i only. The PS3 has a horrible record of supporting all HD resolutions, whereas the 360 supports 1080i & 720p on every title. That is why I ask.
I have to agree with whoever pointed out that the heads-up displays for QTE prompts are proportion-mangled to heck. I REALLY hope that's adjusted.
This is a day one for me, I really enjoyed these games, and I would've loved to see Chains of Olympus on here as well. I think it would have held up fairly well, even as a PSP game.
Also, whoever says that Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 runs at 60 fps hasn't played it...or its demo. Intermittent but distracting slowdown says "hi."
Looking round the net it looks like this is a US only thing, kinda sucks seeing as I've never played the God of War games and was looking forward to them. Just have to hope the disk isn't region locked and get an import
@ Infneon: This isn't US only but it isn't being released in Europe until 2010, so if you can't wait then you may as well import. I'm fairly certain that it isn't region locked.

Sigh. Does _anyone_ care about aspect ratios?

=)
@TheBigFeel - My widescreen TV cares.
Will it beat out the 360? I have no fucking idea; but this year, the PS3 kicks ass.
QTEs + God of War (or any game, really) = FAIL

P.S. THIS. IS. PURE. SEX.
