God forbid: no online multiplayer for Prime 3, Brawl not playable at E3 photo

In a double whammy of "OH, COME ON!" inducing Nintendo news, it's been confirmed that Metroid Prime 3 will not feature online multiplayer, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl will not be featuring in a playable form at E3.

Wired's Game|Life is reporting that Nintendo will not be showing Super Smash Bros. Brawl among this year's E3 Wii line-up, instead focusing on never-before-seen software. This is great and all, and with the smaller scale of this year's E3, I can see why they'd do this. Let's hope those never-before-seen titles aren't five or six mini-game collections and a new Brain Age.

In other Wii news, Retro Studio's CEO and President Michael Kelbeugh has confirmed to GamePro that Metroid Prime 3: Corruption will not feature online multiplayer. Kelbeugh insists that resources were allocated towards making the single-player experience as solid as possible, and that's certainly admirable. But fans of the extremely solid Metroid Prime Hunters Wi-fi play are somewhere crying right now.

I hope you're happy, Michael.

I understand that my views put me pretty deep in the minority here, but I personally don't give a shit about online multiplayer. I don't really ever go on xbox live anymore. You can get the same experience by playing bots that spit out racial/gender slurs. Yea, playing with friends online is alright, but you know what's better? Playing in the same room or house. I understand a lot of people love playing online, but I still think it's a better time to get 3 or 4 friends over, get a case of beer, some junk food and talk shit in person. But just my preference.
Smash not being playable doesn't surprise me. The point of the Smash Dojo is to be Nintendo's conduit to the fans. They've cut out the journalists essentially. Anything they want to release, they release through there. It should be really interesting to see how that plays out.
I think that one or two of those IPs is going to be something knock down drag out amazing. Nintendo rode the E3 buzz last year, they know how to work a crowd, and they know what people want. The fanboy in me is dreaming of Earthbound Wii, but realistically, we'll see new Mario Kart for sure. Should be interesting.

I hope it's Mario Kart Wii. Otherwise, I can't think of much else Nintendo can bring to the table.

Also, E3 is not the place they'd announce Earthbound Wii (which would be known as Mother 4, the game I was semi-joking in a longing manner about). Despite the REALLY strong fandom here in the states, Nintendo sees it as a niche market. We didn't even get Mother 3, and people have been clamoring for that for a while. Should they announce it, it'd be announced in either a Japanese mag or at TGS. Mother's way more popular in its home country no matter HOW much we want it here. Shame, too. Mother 3 was really good. I enjoyed it more than most things I played last year.

No Metroid online? omg No!!!
Seriously though, after terrible multiplayer outings like Echoes and Hunters I don't see why anyone would be upset about this. It would just end up sucking like the other ones did. Metroid isn't a multiplayer game to begin with.

I personally don't care about no online for MP3, but I think that it spells doom for the franchise, and the continued alienation of dudes to the Wii.

Dudes want their console to have an online multiplaye FPS. With out that, they wont buy the console.

MP3 needed to branch out to non Metroid fans via online multiplayer, as most Metroid fans got sick of Metroid Prime after the first game.

I didn't. I'm really excited about MP3. But I'm not expecting it to sell well.

If Nintendo is smart, they will whip up a quick on online FPS for the end of the year. It's not that hard to do. Any group of simpleton game designers can design a successful online FPS. Just look at Bungie.

@ J:

If by "winner" you mean they drew the most attention, then that's fine. But the reason why lines were so were:

1) It was an unknown. No one had ever used a Wii before. It was so unlike anything Nintendo has shown before. No one had ever played one. Period.

2) They positioned it so you'd have to wait in long lines just to play it. You didn't have to wait to get into a room to play a PS3. Plus, Sony had already been showing their PS3 hand for a few months. Plenty of people had an opportunity to play a PS3 prior to E3.

3) Hype, hype, hype.

Perpetual motion is not the myth some seem to think it is.

Step 1:
Write a post for Destructoid which contains the word "Nintendo" and/or the word "Wii". It doesn't matter what the content is (could be good news or bad news, but either way the actual content is irrelevant) or who the author is (apparently your name doesn't even have to be Robert Summa anymore).

Step 2:
Sit back and watch as the anti-fanboys pour out of the woodwork.

Step 3:
Continue watching as the fanboys turn up in droves to retaliate.

Step 4:
Note the inevitable presence of at least one or two posts for which the sole purpose is to point out how incredibly fucking retarded, pointless, and tiresome Steps 2 and 3 are, without realizing (or, in some cases, caring) that Step 4 is equally fucking retarded, pointless, and tiresome.

Step 5:
Profit.

Step 6:
Wait for a little while (maybe a few hours or maybe a few days) and then return to Step 1.

In cases like this, my posts usually fall under Step 3, but this particular one is a tick mark in the Step 4 column.

I would rather hear about new upcoming games from Nintendo than more bits of information for games I already know are going to come out eventually. At least it'll silence critics who feel that there is a lack of new games coming out for the Wii

@Nick:

Pretty much, you just summed up why I think Nintendo 'won.' Also, they had the best press conference of the three in my opinion as well. Sony didn't have much worth playing on the PS3. Warhawk was neat, but the real winner was Heavenly Sword.

Honestly, I didn't play anything at Microsoft's booth, but at their press party, I didn't see anything that knocked my socks off.

Nintendo had a LOT of playable games for the Wii, and it was a totally new experience. Nintendo played their cards close to their vest, and it paid off in spades. After E3, everyone went home talking about two things:

1) The Wii is awesome. Snake in Brawl?! OMG.

2) The PS3 was HOW MUCH?!???!!

This year, Nintendo is sitting pretty in the console race. The Wii flies off shelves, but let's face it. Nintendo has ALWAYS relied on first party games to move consoles. They don't have THAT many good franchises, and most of them are already announced with something upcoming.

Their new games could be a Kid Icarus title. It could be be a mario kart game. Maybe Pikmin or Starfox, but honestly, I don't see either of those happening. I found pikmin boring, and Star Fox has been lame since the first one. I don't see what else they can really pull out right now. Guess we'll find out in a week.

JSensei- Yea, I know that Mother is very much a Japanese franchise, and you're right that it would be announced at TGS. I was just saying that would be the best possible scenario for me. I'm a frequenter over at Starmen.net and hoping and praying for a localization for Mother 3.
And to weigh in briefly on the E3 debate... since when was E3 about anything other than hype? I'm not being a troll, I'm just seriously asking, if the point of E3 isn't to generate hype... what is it?

Eh, I guess in all honesty, I didn't play much online for Metroid Prime Hunters. The people on it were too good. Still, I think this is a mistake.

To anyone thinking that Metroid Prime 3 will still be a huge game at all, tell me this.......do you still play Prey? As highly reviewed and revolutionary as it was, it was old news in 3 months because it did not have a solid multiplayer.
And Metroid Prime not having ANY multiplayer, of course means...

...nothing.

Metroid Prime 1 didn't have any multiplayer, and it was still awesome, so why is it such a big deal if Metroid Prime 3 doesn't have multiplayer?

No really, why does every game supposedly have to have multiplayer these days in order to be successful? It's stupid. I would rather have a fully fleshed out single player game rather than a less-than-fully fleshed out single player game that also has a shitty multiplayer component which I will never use tacked on to it.

I have to agree with Im OK here. Since it's not exactly been a priority, even if it HAD multiplayer, it'd probably be BAD multiplayer. Honestly, I'd prefer not to have any if that's the case.
