Go Internet with PSP multiplayer: AdhocParty app hits photo

Late this afternoon, SCE made it possible to compete in Internet multiplayer matches while on the toilet. And it was as easy as offering US PSP owners a downloadable app that works around ad hoc functionality.

The app is called adhocParty. It may seem fresh, but it isn’t -- it has been available in Japan for some time, allowing the droves of Monster Hunter PSP players to connect without having to be near each other. Regardless of newness, adhocParty has just been released in the US as a free download via the PS Store.

As explained in a PS blog video, a PS3 is needed to make the app clap. The big black system acts as a dongle and also provides the visuals for the hoops (creating lobbies, finding players, etc.) you’ll have to jump through in order to play ad hoc games through the Internet. But before that, you’ll have to register your PSP and download the application as if you were setting up Remote Play again.

Just think of the process like adding a controller, except the PS3 actually does something this time around.

Currently, SCE is making a big deal out of Gran Turismo and Monster Hunter support, but we’re guessing adhocParty also works with other games, so give it a spin and experiment if you care. And speaking of caring, a video walkthrough courtesy of the publisher of the app is available over at the PS blog. Go learn!

Sweet. Cant wait to get home tomorrow and tinker with it.

If it works like I think it will(with the game it will I hope), maybe that means we can add some PSP fun to the FNF lineup.

Maybe...

Been waiting for this for awhile. Can't wait to play a ton of games online that were only adhoc before. Awesome stuff.

I haven't found a game that did not work with the Japanese version.

It's nice to finally have a version that I can read everything.

Also, the news post doesn't reflect that it also has voice support. So all of the Ad Hoc games you're playing, you can use your bluetooth headset to voice chat with the people you're playing with. A great boon for us Monster Hunter players. :D

One other thing to note for functionality that I thought of:
You cannot have a wireless connection on your PS3 for this to work. You need to have your PS3 wired, or wired to a bridge. The PS3 wireless needs to be unused so it can connect to your PS3.

I noticed a lot of people were shocked at hearing that a wireless network device cannot service 2 separate networks at the same time. Just doesn't work like that.

You failed to mention that people on wireless connections cannot use this app.

Bah, I don't have a PS3. That's kind of absurd that I have to miss out on something big like this because I don't own both of Sony's flagship gaming products....

This is a "non-partisan" piece of reporting?

Cool! I have quite a few ad-hoc games. Really sucks when you're the only one of your friends that plays a psp.

I don't own either of these consoles, but this sounds like a totally rad idea. And for people running off wireless: Go out and grab the WRT54GL for $50, flash it with Tomato firmware and turn it into a kickass wireless bridge to free up your PS3's wireless (there's a very simple dropdown to turn it into a bridge once you flash it with Tomato). I use two of them to bridge two rooms in my house and it works wonderfully, and it's cheap!

I've been using the Japanese version for a long time.

It's fucking excellent.

...Wait, this doesn't automatically work with every PSP game? I was under the impression that if it had ad-hoc, this worked without fail.

I use a wireless router for my PS3, dammit. No AdhocParty for me. :(

I have a network cable I run from router to PS3, just for when i'm playing AdHoc party.

Hate messy cables, luckily swapping the settings is super easy on a PS3. although it would be nice to have various network setting, uh, sets, to choose from like on the PSP.

@Free Touch

The only issue with that is finding other people online wanting to play Darkstalkers. I'd find someone on the forums before just venturing online and hoping to find someone.
