Go, go, go: Left 4 Dead 2 PC demo hits photo

The Left 4 Dead 2 PC demo is now available via Steam after a short delay that almost caused the Internet to explode … or catch on fire. We’re not sure which one -- mainly because we just made that crap up -- but considering some of the raw emotion we’ve observed on various message boards since the recent Valve stunner, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Internet didn’t actually almost collapse.

As a bit of a refresher: this is the pre-order demo -- an “early access” thing that Valve is giving people for letting their money sit in the Steam bank account. The actual demo for everyone is supposed to hit PC and Xbox LIVE on November 3 (or 10th for LIVE Silver membership holders).

What are you waiting for? Jump in “The Parish.” Tell us how it is. Discuss this thing.

Well at least there is a public demo coming pretty soon. I figured I was going to get screwed out of the thing entirely.

I hate the fact that it's for preorders only. I'm not going to preorder a game if I don't know whether or not I can run it. :(

Decrypting like the fist of the north star right now. And a 40 hour delay is hardly short in internet time. I had homework I could've been doing instead of checking every 10 minutes to see if the damn thing was up.

@Pedro

This is just early access to the demo. I think it becomes available to everyone on the 10th of November.

That would be fantastic. I was going to grab the demo of the first one for the week or so that it was available, but that was the ONE WEEK my computer was down. I know this game has the same system requirements as the first one, so I would have used that as a guide. It'll be fantastic if a demo does go public for this, even for a limited time.

Just played 2 rounds of Parish. Shotgun fires slower, handguns seem to do more damage, machete is the best melee in Parish, assault rifle only has 3-round burst fire, sniper rifle is mostly unchanged. Charger is a lot easier to kill than the tank, jockey is the most annoying in my opinion.

Biggest change is the death system. You can carry around the defib, and save someones life if they die (one use only and it is instead of a healthpack). If you do die and noone defibs you then you have to wait till the next level no survivor closets at all.

Boomer Bile is amazing, tanks on normal can be taken down just by the boomer bile, whilst you walk around a corner to avoid rocks.

The moving cresendo is alright, not as good as it sounded but then thats because everyone knew to run and run and run. Using the shot here really helps as it gives you a speed boost to power through the level.

There are 4 shotguns in the demo, the one you're talking about is the first shotgun from the first game, there are 2 rifles, the one you're talking about is the SCAR, it passes trough enemies like a sniper rifle, and there still is the M4...

Playing the early access xbox demo... I don't know what it is, but the gameplay feels different. Controls seem to respond quicker, the characters seem to have a little bit more weight. It almost controls like the PC version of Left 4 Dead. Xbox live demo is also a couple of levels from the Parish campaign. The demo isn't going to sell anyone on the game, just hold fans over 'til the full game hits stores.

The demo could've used a bit more length, but the parts it did have were awesome. I'm really looking forward to seeing versus mode as well.

@urahara There are still survivor closets. The defib just cuts out the middle man (waiting).

I want to make this abundantly clear. This is simply my veiw on the deno that has been released, not the full version.

The demo offers a campaign/movie called the parish which only gives you two saferooms worth of segments. Likely meaning there's one more segment at least to get through since we didn't get to have the usual finale on the last bit of this campaign.

The similarities mostly end at the apearance of the game, the differences to Left 4 Dead 2 are subtle, but too numerous in scale to keep track of.
And two examples, were the new aggressiveness of the special infected. one of my partners got caught by a smoker. We killed it, then within half a minute, we got a new smoker trying to grab us. (Normal difficulty.)
The witch has the newfound ability to move BEFORE being alerted, making certain moments very tense, but also showing the massively improved AI.
Due to this improved enemy AI I found myself in a situation involving my back to some spitter acid on the floor, a witch wandering around in front of me and a smoker purposefully moving himself, just like in versus mode(very smart), right behind the witch, and then the smoker proceeded to grab one of us and set off the witch.

The general feel of this game does bring it home to it's atmospheric original, L4D, but also departs from many of it's downfalls. You will no longer be able to kill an entire hoard by crouching in a corner and contiually meleeing leaving me feeling helpless, a very good thing. And the faster pace of gameplay mixed with smarter game components and GREATLY improved graphics means that this game is truly worth your time. The fun I had using the new magnum pistol, and listening to the punch it packs is so satisfying that I look forward to desintegrating a few infected's faces with it when it is realised worldwide on NOV 17.

I know this's a review for a preview demo so please don't write comments to me if you find this topic strange. I simply felt the need to express the enjoyment I've had for the game so far. And if anyone else is like me, I'd want to know more about this game.
I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I did thinking about it and writing it. :-)

I liked the levels, and noticed a change while running through the first level. One time playing through, I had to run up a set of steps which next time were fenced off, and a tunnel was open instead. This could mix things up quite a bit, however, this was the only instance I noticed it. I'll still heavily consider grabbing it (once I have money).

Huh, seeing how this wasn't a free for all demo download, it's not as bad as letting everyone hit it at once.

I've only had one play though on single player and fun was had. Only problem is I'm running the demo above recommended specs with recommended settings, yet it frequently hangs for a few seconds while playing. Hopefully it will play nice after a restart.

@ Naim Master: I think the SCAR is actually classed as a sniper rifle while the AK makes up the second assault rife along side the M4.

A few people are having issues with occassional lockups. It's to do with multicore rendering I believe. Turn it off in the options.

I have the fun issue of having to download the patch three times, at 15kbps each, for it to lock up while decrypting.
Not fun. Especially considering I waited so damn long for the game after the delays.

Alright, so.

As far as a demo go, it's pretty good. A lot feels different, like how the guns handle and physics in general.

Melee weapons feels nice and give a satisfying sound when you lob off the heads of the zombies. (God the frying pan have a nice "wham" in it.)

The AK-47 feels a bit underpowered, imo. The snipers are good and the shotguns/UZI's, too.

The new "Adrenaline" is awesome, slight health boost and you are generaly faster for a few seconds.

So, yeah. All in all, I look forward to the real thing. Also:
