This MMO RTS caught my eye just now, and apparently Picaroon has been in beta for a while now. If you can get past the fact that it doesn't have AAA-oh-my-god-DirectX-11-graphics, it looks like it could be pretty fun.
UK dev Nice Technology says it's adding easier tutorials in the form of interactive quests to guide new players through the basic in a Waterworld kind of setting. They also added an orbital laser cannon. You can build naval fleets, fight over the little dry land that's still available in the form of resource-rich islands, shiver pirates' timber, and use "cards" to provide special bonuses for combat.
This might not be for everyone, but if you're into free mass naval battling online it could be worth checking out!

I was excited until I watched the trailer. It looks pretty boring. Just ships sitting still shooting some kind of fireballs at each other? I think I'll pass on this one.
