Go buy a new computer: BioShock PC demo hits tomorrow at 7 PM EST (Update) photo
     demos

Perhaps you PC gamers have heard a few Xbox 360 owners talk about this demo for some game called BioShock. Word on the street is that it's pretty good or something. But hey, don't listen to me: I'm paid to say that the game is awesome, right?

Elizabeth Tobey, community manager over at the Cult of Rapture, has revealed that the PC version of the BioShock demo will be available tomorrow, starting at 7 PM EST. FilePlanet members will get exclusive pre-loading privileges, so along with your new PC that you'll be buying to play BioShock smoothly, you might as well sign up for a premium FilePlanet account. What's a few extra dollars when you've just dropped $500 on a video card?

PC gamers, prepare to gloat -- Voodoo Extreme says that the PC version of BioShock "outclasses" its console "Little Sister," sporting higher resolutions and slicker controls. Though after having played quite a bit of the Xbox 360 version myself, it's hard to believe it can get much better.

[Update: The demo is now available for downloading over at FileFront. Go get it, guys!]

Yeah, higher resolutions and slicker controls, for only four times as much for the hardware to play it on! It's a wonder that PC Gaming is waning with stuff like this.

I recently built a computer for my brother; and by "built", I mean I upgraded my computer and gave him the leftovers :P . Even after the upgrade I fear how the game will run. Here are my specs before and after.

CPU: Celeron D 340 2.9ghz (single core) 256kb L2 cache -> C2D E4400 (D-C) @2ghz 2mb shared L2
Graphix: 4xAGP geforce 5200fx 256mb -> 8xAGP Radeon X1650XT 256mb
Ram: 512mb ddr -> 1gb ddr

Anyone want to help me by guessing how well my new system will run the game?

Isn't this one of those vista only games? -_-;

As for the better graphics and controls? Comes down to preference at that point. I'm sure there's a little bit more to key because....*counts buttons on a 360 controller then looks back at keyboard* but a bunch of my friends are really adept at playing first person experience even shooters on a controller now. The graphics? I think you said it best Nick, if Bioshock is your game then by all means SLI twoa' dem 8800's and fire up that 1k power supply but I'm fine with "mediocrity". I REALLY REALLY REALLY do NOT want to get Vista, so I will not be playing this game until Vista stops blowing goats for nickles or they release a patch, not a third party hax.
dyslixec's Avatar
dyslixec at 08/20/2007 00:36
No its not a vista only game, and this game can run on hardware all the way back to the GeForce 6600 (which is a damn old card). This game runs on XP and Vista, as will UT3, as will gears of war for pc. 2k Isnt dumb, and they know most of their gaming market is still on xp. As do many other big time developers.

Graphic Wise.. this will be the difference, higher res and higher textures. The only way you will get a major difference is if you use direct x 10 features within bioshock, and the only way you can do that is if you are playing on vista w/ a dx 10 card. However, you can still play this game on XP with slightly upped graphics.
madmatt's Avatar
madmatt at 08/20/2007 00:37
It isnt vista only. Its also compatible with XP service pack2.

I have little to no interest in this game, lol western Fps Rpg NEIN
Tho, saying that it does have some style and it can't be worse than the bland-fest that was oblivion with the worlds worst battle system lol...

Lol yes, pc people will be able to run it at a higher resolution...
After spending £500 on a crazy graphics card, £250 on a Cpu and then get a whopping 3fps at any above 360 resolution lol...

However of alot those PC nutters i know who aren't 100% into online fps fragfests, they'll play a game with everything turned to max at 2000xgodknows what resolution but get 10fps, just to say they do, thus extending their internet pen...credentials

Ok, the plan is... Travel 5 years into the future, build a Mid-Spec gaming PC(which would still cost more than a 360 does now) and then you'll probably get a decent 1080p+ framerate

lol plibble, I play games that are on 360 that are on my pc just as well. Rainbow Six Vegas (u3 engine) for example, runs just fine for me. If you are smart about it, and actually know what type of hardware to look for and know when to jump on the right purchase you can spend just as much as you do on your 360 over all on a pc and get equal if not better performance.

I'm sorry you feel the fact that we have to spend SO MUCH on parts, and get NO playable performance what so ever. It really is a false accusation thats being spread about pc users.. the fact of the matter is ITS NOT TRUE.

Iam with Plibble. This game is overhyped. Ive played the demo a few times. Its a little too warped for me. Great graphics, smooth FPS, and original. But being original isnt proof of greatness. Twisted retro sickness-yes. Gears, RFOM much better. IMHO

I'm actually building a computer right now, I'm just torn on what video card to buy. Considering the processor in this rig is a P4 3.60Ghz w/ HT-Tech, what would people suggest for a video card? Be reasonable, people -- I'm not buying an 8800GXT, I have a budget I have to try and maintain.
dyslixec's Avatar

Maximus go with the recommended Card for Bioshock, which is a GeForce 8600 (they go around $120-180) Or you can get a 7800 GT for that much, which will perform a little better but not have any dx 10 support.

Twisted retro sickness sounds good to me, fps rpg does not lol
Gears however does still have my crown of worst game i've played :D

Very few 360/Ps3 games realy need to be on that hardwear in terms of what they're displaying, i mean my pc is probably around lower mid-spec nowdays my gpu is an x1950xt which is wonderful for a dx9 card but i couldn't picture my pc running some of my 360 games at anything near how they should be...

If you are smart about it, and actually know what type of hardware to look for and know when to jump on the right purchase you can spend just as much as you do on your 360 over all on a pc and get equal if not better performance

lol what!? you can get a 360 for less than £200 quid... my x1950xt NOW which is a dx9 card still costs like £110, thee is no way you can build a 360 beating pc for £200, you could barely build a gamecube beating machine for that

System requirements, per Gamestop:

Minimum System Requirements:
# Operating Systems: Windows XP (with Service Pack 2) or Windows Vista
# CPU: Pentium 4 2.4GHz Single Core processor
# System RAM: 1GB
# Video Card: Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 128MB RAM (NVIDIA 6600 or better/ATI X1300 or better, excluding ATI X1550).
# Sound Card: 100% direct X 9.0c compatible sound card Hard disc space: 8GB free space

Recommended System Requirements:
# Operating Systems: Windows XP (with Service Pack 2) or Windows Vista
# CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo processor
# System RAM: 2GB
# Video card: DX9: Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 512MB RAM (NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT or better) DX10: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 or better
# Sound Card: Sound Blaster® X-Fi™ series (Optimized for use with Creative Labs EAX ADVANCED HD 4.0 or EAX ADVANCED HD 5.0 compatible sound cards)
**Important Note: Game requires Internet connection for activation**

Since I don't have a 360 but I do have an NVIDIA 7600 GT, which is at least better than the minimum specs, I should be good to go. Even if I have to turn down some of the graphical whoreishness of the game, it's going to be a damn fun one.

@madmatt: Regarding your specs. You'll be able to run the game, but I wouldn't expect the best eye candy. On medium settings, I'll go ahead and guess you'll get about 22 fps at 1440x900 or 1280x1024. Pure guesswork, let me know if I'm close. =)

meh played the demo, its ok. its just another FPS with nice graphics and the only thing that was actually as good as the hype, it was the water effects, That shit was awsome. Other from that, watching the game is kinda of a rip off from Half life with a different story...

Why do I feel this is so Lost Planet like...? supreme overhypeness over a regular game...?

I look through these comments and aside from Lemon and a few others, all I see are a bunch of 360 owners complaining, perhaps because the reviews say that 'a game developed first on the PC is... OMG... BETTER ON THE PC?!?!' and rehashing all the same PC-hate comments like 'pc components are all so fking expensive, pc owners are elitists, etc.'.

God just SHUT THE FUCK UP AND JUST PLAY GAMES.

Guys its kinda stupid running around shouting 'I dont believe it!' and '360 FOREVER!!' when the game was MADE FOR PC. wow.

and yes, PC version has higher graphics settings, and whats more it allows you to hide and change the menus originally made to make the game easy to play with a controller, the game can be adapted for a keyboard and mouse! we should be celebrating that a developer has finaly had the sense to change a game before porting it to another system. not running around playing console wars

(pew pew pew! Im gonna be reggie! *wookie roar*)

->Mxy: Bullshit! That's an 18 parsec run, and you know it.

->Madmatt: Wouldn't hurt to get another gig or two of ram, costs fuck all anyway.

I used to hate console FPSes, and with damn good reason. The vast majority of console FPSes, with rather rare exceptions such as goldeneye, were either shitty PC ports that looked and played awful, or even worse were designed for a console and ported over to the PC. This was an enormous kick in the crotch to PC gamers, as it meant we were getting games with inferior engines, designed for console controllers. One of the greatest games ever, deus ex, was ruined as a franchise because of it's gimped ass xbox-centric sequel. The elder scrolls games also require quite a bit of modding before their menus and whatnot are tolerable with a mouse & keyboard. PC gamers do have a right to be pissed off about cross platform games, more so than cross console ones, because it does usually make a huge difference. Unfortunately, the days of PC's FPS supremacy are gone, but at least irrational seem to have put decent effort into make bioshock awesome on both.

First person shooters are invariably better on PCs. Assuming that someone has a PC and a 360 or PS3, I really see little reason to choose a console version if the PC can play it. Chances are it will look better, control better and be cheaper too.

I built a system on a Celeron processor for the first time back in Feb. I will never build a Celeron ever again after that painful experience. Next time you build a PC, use the full speed processor. It's worth the extra cash, trust me. The measly $20-50 in savings is not worth it for how badly a Celeron gimps your computing experience.
