Being able to change sports history in a videogame isn’t exactly a novel idea; features like Madden Moments have been around for a while now. But in NBA Live 09, EA Sports is taking that feature a step further, and that step -- when combined with the game’s Dynamic DNA -- could turn out to be one giant leap for sports gamerkind. Check out the trailer above, in which Assistant Producer Gareth Reeder -- who has an unmistakably Canadian accent -- explains NBA Live Rewind and how Dynamic DNA ties in with it.

As Reeder tells it, NBA Live Rewind “lets you play a single game that happened in the past.” Sounds rather pedestrian, doesn’t it? But the integration of Dynamic DNA is what really makes Rewind so promising and so brilliant. When you use Rewind to replay a particular game from last season, NBA Live 09 will incorporate the DNA from that game -- hot streaks, active rosters, and all kinds of other statistical data -- so while you’ll be starting with a clean slate, it’ll be just like you actually went back to that date and rewound time to tip-off.

To begin, you pick two teams, and the game will start downloading the DNA data for all the games they played against each other. Then, you can check out box scores for those individual games, as well as all kinds of other DNA info, and it’s up to you to pick which game you want to replay. To top it all off, once the new NBA season begins on October 5th, NBA Live 09 will be updated with DNA and Rewind data from the 2008-09 season! And I love the cheesy ending where Reeder himself rewrites history, don’t you?

If this doesn’t sound the least bit intriguing to you, check your wrist for a pulse. NBA Live 09 will be out on October 7th for PS3, 360, Wii, PS2, and PSP (presumably, NBA Live Rewind and Dynamic DNA will only be available on the PS3 and 360). Hit up the game’s official Web site for more details.

Kobe scored 81 points on my Raptors?? Really?? Not according to my future Live Rewind ahaha!!! Very cool feature, but I'd like to see how it truly makes a difference in the actual game.

You know what would be better?? If I could erase He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named from ever being drafted by the Raptors. While he was good in the beginning and we all loved him, we were just too naive to see the signs when he lost all desire for the game. Thankfully Bosh has almost beat all his franchise records he still holds :P.

Can't wait for the coming season :D!!!!

I never cared too much about NBA Live 09. But I do like this feature. While certainly NBA Live likes to add new stuff, the 2k series has always perfected it. Looks like it'll be 2k for me again this year, I can't bear the Live series.

Unrelated to the story, but I'm getting that itch to get back into sports games... Maybe NHL09. ^_^

Samit and everyone that gives a shit about sports/basketball games, which NBA game are you looking forward to? It's a toss up for me so far, I played the Live 09 demo and actually had fun, the features look damn good and all we've had so far is trailers for 2K9, gimme a demo or show me some features!!

@Ceej989: Considering that the 2K series has been on top in the videogame basketball world for years, NBA Live has a lot to prove. I'd wait for reviews, personally.

Damn, and I was thinking they were going to make this game into Braid.

This DNA business is really intriguing, but that NBA Live demo is a bit too slippery. If 2K9 plays the same, DNA is the deal breaker.
