Remember the Gizmondo? Probably not. The only thing I can ever remember about this ill-fated handheld is an incident involving an executive of the company which produced it crashing an incredibly expensive Ferrari and then going to prison.
Regardless of its utter failure to create any sort of foothold in the market, plans were laid for a new Gizmondo handheld to be released this month. Due to difficulty in securing funds in the current economic situation, however, those plans have been shelved until 2009.
Since there's no rush to get the device to market, Media Power is making some design changes with their newfound time. It will still be running your choice of Google Android or Windows CE, but the handheld will now be a combination gaming device and smartphone.
If the new Gizmondo ever sees the light of day and you happen to be one of the five people on Earth who actually has one, there's more good news for you. Media Power will be offering owners of the first handheld a free upgrade to the Gizmondo 2.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Let's see, would the Spin Jump be the Oh! Button, or the Zillion Dots Button? It's been a while since I played.
five 13-year-olds will have their moms get it for them for christmas because they think it will "kick ass".
two geeks will buy one to hack it and install linux.
one poor sap will buy a PSP on ebay, but it will actually be a gizmondo 2 in a PSP box.
good luck, suckas.
handhelds isnt about power and features but about GOOD and FUN games.
Now, I haven't done my research here exactly, but I'm going to assume that the Gizmondo 2 offers more (or different) multimedia experiences than a DS or a PSP - given that its the only way this thing could actually stand a chance. If that's the case though, i'm thinking can't something well established like an iPhone or iPod Touch already do whatever it is a Gizmondo would ever want to...?
Also the iPhone isn't an ugly monster of a machine...
wasn't the first one simply a mob scam?
