Phantasy Star 2 was a -balls- hard game. I remember buying it used at a Video Game Exchange. It was supposed to come with a hint book of some sort, but my copy didn't have it. As a result, I got horribly stuck figuring out what to do next trying to find the whirlpool that takes you to the underwater base. Even with the guide, the dungeons on Dezo were absurdly difficult. Hell, even after I bested those, I -never- beat Dark Force. I ground for hours and hours and still couldn't beat him. PS2 is actually the only one of the original four that I haven't bested. Shit, I didn't get to find out the ending until years later, and I honestly don't think I saw video of the ending until the last couple of years. Crazy.
Keep in mind, I earned all four endings of PSIII, which was, overall, a far inferior title. This game was great, but it busted your damn balls.
PSIV, however, is super easy. Aside from the absurd difficulty spikes prior to Zeo's Fortress and Lashiec/Three Wizards, the game was a breeze. That said, it was my favorite RPG until I played FF6 and the other SNES classics a few years later, and I still loved the damn thing. Shit, my old internet handle was "phystar," which, obviously, is just Phantasy Star abbreviated. That's what a huge fan I was.
If you're new the series and haven't tried any of them.. play PSIV. You won't regret it, and it may interest you enough to try the other three major entries.

Me too. I've seen screenshots of the games and they look quite good. Well, and its Phantasy Star.
Phantasy Star IV is pretty darn good, though.
Agreed. It seems like sega's ignoring the dreamcast games I really want to see rereleased. I'd spend some hard-earned money on an hd remake of the jet set/ grind games. Or, you know, a sequel. Spiritual successor even.
