Girls, want to beat boys at gaming? Here's a handbook photo

Wow. Wow. Wow. To drive home how insulting this is, I'm going to reverse the situation: You meander into Barnes and Noble, and whilst perusing the aisles you stumble upon a bright blue book titled "The Boy's Guide To Gaming: How to Beat The Girls At Halo Every Time!" If you vomited on the floor and not on the actual book, I tip my hat to you.

I wish I was joking, but The Girl's Guide to Gaming is very much a real book(with a pink cover no less) and available for sale this very moment. Here is the way the book is summarized on the product page:

Do you want to take on the boys at their own game and beat them every single time? You want to prove that games AREN'T just for the guys anymore! Are you, your daughter, your niece or your best friend a Nintendo DS or DS Lite girl gamer? Tired of other gaming publications ignoring all your favourite games in favour of the latest big boys toys? So you want all the latest gaming gossip and the hottest hints and tips especially written for you? So do we, and its about time.
The Girl's Guide To Gaming! is the must have accessory for all Nintendo DS and DS Lite gaming girls, just like you.

The biggest issue with women in gaming is crap like this. If I march into a LAN party wearing a pair of pink crotchless underwear and no pants and expect to be taken seriously, I have no room to bitch that boys don't look at me as a gamer. Perhaps toting this book around is a step less dramatic than the vagina-on-display tactic as mentioned above, but still and all, it only calls attention to the issue.

Just play games, girls. Gender is only an issue here if you choose to make it so.

I'm trying to imagine what the author of this book imagines as a gender-specific "tip" for a game. I hope it's not shit like "PROTIP: Use the DS stylus instead of your finger, or else you might chip a nail!" "PROTIP: Animal Crossing is a great game to play, because stuff happens while you're gone, so you can go out and get your hair done!"

I like how it assumes that girls only play the DS (or DS Lite!) because it's the only console that comes in pink and is easily 'blinged.'

Someone MUST purcahse this book. Or if you're opposed to giving the creator money, steal or borrow it from a library (would they even stock this kind of stuff?).

I have a feeling this book is stuffed to the brim with hilarious quotes. I MUST KNOW THEM!!

Is walking into a lan party with pink crothless panties and no pants on one of the tactics to "take on the boys at their own game and beat them every single time?" Cause I think it would work.

Theres no need for a "guide"... pretty much the information could be in a flyer:

Girls: If the guy looks like hes letting you win, he wants to fuck you.

Guys: If you let the girl win (and you dont look like a horse ass) the chances of fucking her will get greatly improved.

I think the target audience for this is probably much younger than you're writing about. Everything else aimed at children is also horribly sexist and they don't seem to mind. Not that they shouldn't.

Wait! Want to save £7.49? I have developed a 3-step process that girl gamers can follow that will guarantee success 99% of the time! 4 out of 5 girl gamers recommend it!

Step 1: Choose a game you wish to become good and and put it into your console of choice.

Step 2: Play the game.

Step 3: Repeat step 2, alot.

There you go, I hope it's not too difficult!!! If this helped you out, feel free to send me a dollar.

I host sizable LAN parties in my area. I rent (by rent I mean use for free) the meeting hall of a local fire station to put on LANs of about 20 people on average (record is 50 exactly). My "chief technical officer" is female. The first couple hours is setup, and seeing as how we end up with a different combination of routers, switches, and wires each LAN, it's a puzzle to setup. (Usually we just use three or four Wireless G routers, works well enough, but anyway) She does a lot of the work, while I get people setup where they need to be, and get things like the music, and the console pit set up.

"The guys" don't treat her (lets call her Sandy) any different than they treat each other. We do get some girls (we mostly get regulars, but we get some new guests each LAN) that think they should be treated differently. For instance, during an intense game of Q3 (yes, we still play Q3, fuck yeah Q3) we started shouting at each other (better than voice chat!) all kinds of things, one thing in particular was "I WILL MOUNT YOU". Keep in mind this was said from one male to another male, with no communication to the women in the room express or implied. One of them turned around at her seat and said, "there are fucking ladies in the room". Sandy (who was in on the match, and was doing a good deal of shouting herself) yelled, "bitch men can be mounted".

I lol'd, and I think the girl packed it up and left. All she was doing was playing WoW and using MSN anyway. Why did she even come?

Colette, you continue to impress me! You manage to make it known that you want to be respected as a gamer with a hoo-ha and that is a good cause, but at the same time you want to avoid using that as a method to sell your image or to make yourself look like a skank. Good work! More female gamers could learn from you! Members of the Frag Dolls could learn a lesson from you! I can't stand them!

@Colette: pix or it didn't happen

@Doomtrain: That story made me lol.

My LAN group has been shrinking in attendance over the last year, so we've kind of teamed up with another nearby group we were friends/half ass rivals too. Anyway, we don't really have too many girls in our group (other than girlfriends that feel the need to show up, then complain about being bored), but the other group has several chicks that, get this, actually game. An not the Hello Kitty bullshit, like Quake and stuff. They go to Quakecon, and not just because their boyfriends or husbands were going.

It's shit like this that makes me madder than not acknowledging girls, because this implies that they need professional help to even be on the same level as guys.

The cover says "Hints, CHEATS, and Tips." So, are they telling girls that if they don't have the skills to "beat the boys" or whatever, they should cheat? I'm sure they'll be a real fun gaming partner.

But yeah Colette, Amen. What happened to gender-neutral gaming? I suppose there is room for games aimed at girls or aimed at boys, just like toys are. However, for the game industry to actually reach out to older women, the marketing should be more gender neutral.

This makes it inherently clear that the term "girl gamer" is a purely commercial device. That's right ladies, if you think categorizing yourself as a "girl gamer" is empowering, you're really just degenerating yourself into a gendered marketing device. Sexing an activity yields greater marketing value and more opportunities for cash...

i thought it would be tongue-in-cheek and be funny, like i dunno, blatantly cheating and stuff... and using sexuality, like what dexter said above. Not be completely serious and also claim that girls only play ds games...

no-one has gender in-game - theyre just someone else to shoot!(or whatever relevant action).
