Gifting, MP3 killing Wii updates now available

Gifting, MP3 killing Wii updates now available photo
     wii

My Wii disc tray has been glowing blue for two weeks, and I've just been too lazy to turn it on and see what's up. But maybe I should have, because how else will I know when Nintendo has decided to upgrade the system's firmware?

For those dilligent enough check their Wii messages on the regular, the glow you're seeing now is the updated system software and other goodies. The Virtual Console/Wii Ware title gift giving feature is now available via the shop channel, so feel free to start sending us crap we're too cheap to buy. Additionally, Photo Channel version 1.1 is now available as an optional download; this adds personalized icons, but in an absolutely brilliant move, strips the Wii of its MP3 support.

Oh, and sorry Sterling -- I tried sending you $200 in Virtual Console games, but it looks like those suckers are region locked. Oops.

I actually use my Wii to play mp3s pretty regularly. I put in an SD card with songs on it so I can listen to music while I'm cleaning in my livingroom and kitchen.

Fuck this...

Honestly, I don't trust my friends to buy me the right games. I'd much rather just get one of those $20 points cards.

What was the reason for removing the MP3 function?

@ Boolean: Upgrading to ACC format... it's not hard to convert them, but at the same time why not support both simultaneously? Luckily it's an optional update.

Btw, this won't affect games that already support MP3 playback, like Excite Truck. It just effects the Photo Channel.

@Boolean

It just made too much sense.

@Mxyzptlk: I’m amazed that you were able to use “affect” correctly and then use the wrong word, “effect”, later in the same sentence.

Meh, I’m sure that most people, like AgentMOO, weren’t using their Wiis to play MP3s anyway.

I used it to charge my Ipod...that's about as far as it went in the music department.

and why the hell would I want to listen to music in the photo channel? am I missing some easy listening that people do while looking at photos?

Yeah... I just went and updated, then downloaded the 1.1 photo channel (after backing up the 1.0 :3) and now my fucking photo channel's gone. way to go Nintendo.

I suspect it was probably a licensing issue. The MP3 license may be cheaper than the AAC license.

The bigger news is that if you have a Wii that was built before December 2007 you can easily downgrade to Photo Channel 1.0 (and this is directly sanctioned by Nintendo) by following the steps on Nintendo's website:

Am I the only one who gets these damned messages from Nintendo at midnight? Every update from them comes right as I'm falling asleep, then I notice the blue pulse and have to get out and turn on/turn off the system to keep the light from going on all night long. I'm tellin' you....

My shop channel is broken, which sucks because everything else connects and I REQUIRE Super Metroid.

Plaudits to Nintendo for their continued efforts at decreasing the Photo Channels already paltry relevance.
