Giant Robot is currently holding a fantastic videogame themed art show until October 29th in San Francisco. Over 40 artists specializing in different fields of arts and crafts sent Giant Robot a giant collection of art all inspired in some way or form by videogames.
This was the first time Giant Robot held a videogame themed art show and they’re looking to hold one annually from here on out. All of the pieces you see in the gallery below and on Giant Robot’s site
are all up for sale with prices ranging from $30 to $1000.
I went to the opening reception on the 11th and was really happy with what I saw.
I am 8-bit has been holding onto the monopoly of videogame themed art shows and it’s about time more videogame art shows started to develop. Plus, Game Over touches on all videogames rather than limiting things to just the 8-bit realm.
If you’re in or around the San Francisco area, I highly suggest checking the show out. Otherwise, take a look at the gallery for all of the pieces featured at the show.

Hamza Aziz, Destructoid's Community Director, has been here since day one. He was born when a tiger coughed up a hairball into a pool of ooze. He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
The only piece that really stood out was the ICO piece. The production values on that work were way beyond everything else in the show.
A lot of them reek of Student Work.
Give me more
fix the horrible image viewer.
I second that. The image viewing system is definitely the weakest thing amongst the awesomeness that is dtoid.
However, I do support these types of shows and would love to see future galleries.
The coolest one to me was the ICO painting, by far. I wish I made tons of money so I could have just taken it off the wall :P.
Upon further review, I'll give the Link picture a few more points given it APPEARS to be an attempt to mimic medieval illustrations. I like the concept (assuming my guess is correct) but still think it could use some work.
...Though the work of the guy with the mace (by the same artist) is making me question my previous paragraph. Damn you art! Damn you Destructoid image viewer!
You can't base your criticisms of art around the aesthetics. That's called opinion. What "looks nice" to someone, might not to another. There's a difference between craft and concept.
But that rant aside, there were some great pieces in there. Personally, I love the Rainow Road painting so much and want to take it home and hang it on my wall right now. :D
These are awesome. Thanks, CTZ!
I don't know if I'd fully agree with that first part because then that would mean any work of art--be it paintings, movies, novels, video games, etc.--that someone finds confusing upon initial viewing would fall into that "pretentious bullshit" category. This is not to say that pretentious bullshit does not exist, but I don't like the idea of people eager to dismiss new or great ideas because they're deemed too complicated or not explained word-for-word.
As for the "this looks like high school work" comment, I'm willing to guess that some of it is. After all, who else is doing much in the way of video game artwork to begin with?
While it's true to an extent
It's still a cop out excuse for low production values. Trust me, I hear that shit every day at my art college.
a good concept is not an excuse to slack on thoroughly executed aesthetics.
I really like the one of a big headed Nico Belic (I think) driving over a cliff in a tiny car.
