Ghosts 'N Goblins only $2.99, not actually impossible photo

While some would argue that it was a poor idea for Capcom to bring the notoriously difficult Ghosts ' N Goblins to the iPhone, no one is listening. Yesterday, Ghosts 'N Goblins: Gold Knight hit the App Store for the nice price of $2.99.

The game gives players the option to take control of Arthur or Lancelot, and while both basically control the same, their armor and available weapon sets differ slightly. The game looks pretty nice running on the iPhone, with updated 3D graphics remiscent of Ultimate Ghosts N' Goblins for the PlayStation Portable.

My biggest concern would be the controls, as the series has always a mix of memorization, precise movement, and quick fingers. Gold Knight uses those "phantom" touch controls, with a d-pad that sits on the left side of the screen and three buttons -- attack, jump, and a super attack -- on the right.

As expected, the d-pad doesn't respond like a physical d-pad; climbing ladders was difficult, the iPhone touch screen instead thinking I was pressing left or right. My fat thumb would also obscure most of the left side of the screen, so a few attackin monsters were able to get the jump on me. The attack button does rapid fire, which is nice -- there's no need to repeatidly mash your finger on your screen to take down ghouls with quick attacks.

But for $2.99, this is tough to not recommend, although I would argue that I probably would have paid $10 for a port of the same game on PlayStation Network or Xbox LIVE Arcade... where I'd be able to use a physical controller. The game, however, is not impossible -- after some practice (and luck), I was able to complete the first stage and take the key for coming in.

Below is proof that I was able to at least best the game's first boss, a purple demon with gigantic wings. It's the little things.

I want this, but I also want MegaMan 2 and after the demo for that one I just couldn't bring myself to pay for it. Damn virtual controls.

Why has no one invented a little peripheral with a d-pad and some buttons? Can I patent that?

Someone is working on a physical addon, but there are questions about whether or not a non-jailbroken iPhone would support it.

Yea I'm sure Apple does not want to support any kind of gaming peripheral. Weird asses.

So the game handles terrible just like the original. Sounds like a perfect port!

A peripheral would be totally possible, but it would have to be approved, and the overhead is daunting. That being said, Im through level 3 and loving it.

Picked this up as a big fan of the series, and am actually very impressed with how well the controls work. When you tap attack/jump buttons with the right thumb and slide along the fake-pad with the left thumb, few errors are made. I did have a few cheap deaths, but that is nothing new for these games. In fact, I beat the first two levels without dieing on the first run through (I'm prolific at the old games, brag brag...). Recommended for fans of the series, but, as usual with these, not for anyone who might get easily frustrated with difficulty.

Actually, a couple of those 1-2 hour conferences they do to announce things-ago, when they introduced software 3.0, they announced the ability to have third party hardware integrate with the iPhone and iPod Touch. I'm not sure if the hardware itself will be allowed to install the drivers necessary for operation or if a bunch of devs need to get together and form a "we will support This particular set of hardware in our titles" coalition.
Likely unless Apple reveals a first party solution, few devs will be organized enough to pull it off, though it is legal and possible.

I dunno--the sheer control-throwing frustration of the original just leaves me not wanting to really attempt this on my touchscreen.
