Ghostbusters game will have 100% less Rick Moranis photo

You're a little hyped up about Sierra's upcoming Ghostbusters: The Game, you say? Why, so am I -- in fact, I know very few people that aren't. It depends on how old you were when you saw (or if you saw) the paranormal comedy, but it's a testament to the film's greatness that I can call my grandmother and say I collect spores, molds and fungus and she still laughs. Good stuff, indeed.

Not everyone is so hip to the idea of doing it all over again, however. Although all four original Ghostbusters have agreed to voice their in-game characters, along with William Heck and the Stay-Puft marshmallow man, it seems Rick Moranis has declined to voice his character, which pisses me off because imagining anyone else capturing his character seems near-blasphemous, but the show must go on, I suppose. I'm sure I'll be too busy blasting things to care in the end.

In case you didn't know, Sigorney Weaver also declined to voice her character. This pretty much clinches it -- all Gatekeeper/Keymaster scenes will just not be the same. As long as Zuul isn't voiced by Kevin McDonald, I still have hope for the fate of this game.

“Hi, I’m the keymaster. Are you the gate keeper?”

No one but Rick Moranis could pull that off.

Maybe they can cut up his lines from the original movies for dialog. :D

@Grayfox -- I knew someone would say this. I'm a huge Kevin McDonald (and Kids in the Hall) fan, but his squeaky voice was what i was actually making reference to.

I thought Dana Barrett wasn't even in the script... maybe they replaced her with another character? The idea of her getting involved in paranormal shenanigans a THIRD time seems a bit of a stretch anyway (Since Ghostbusters is so based in realism after all) I'd honestly rather them write out Louis Tully's character than get a poor sound-alike.

Oh, and you forgot Annie Potts has agreed to voice Janine Melnitz! And Brian Doyle Murrary will appear in the game as well.

@ epoch: He pretty much retired in the late 90's to raise his kids after his wife died. He apparently has no interest in getting back into movies, he does comedy music albums now.

Moranis is taking care of his kids, his wife died a few years ago of cancer and he's been providing for them ever since, why do you think he went from being fairly popular to suddenly vanishing?

He gave up on his career for the sake of his kids, I can't help but respect him for that.

You do know he is one of the writers for the game?

I do not understand why he is helping write the characters dialogue but refuses to speak for his own part.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1142978/fullcredits#cast

Also he did retire for awhile in 1997 from acting but came back doing voices for animation and still does... so he is not retired and still voice acts.

Best caption ever.

@xe-cute

I think he's credited as a writer for the game because of his writing for the original movie. So it might not be him directly working on the video game, but carrying over writing credit for the characters/dialogue from the original.
Mxyzptlk's Avatar
Mxyzptlk at 06/23/2008 20:27
@ xe-cute: He's credited with characters... that doesn't mean dialogue, that means the game uses characters he helped originally create in the films (which we can assume means Louis).

Also, he's done like... five things since 97? And four of those voices on kid's movies? Most likely he's just not interested in reprising the character. His choice.

But there again I just wouldn't see why. If everyone else was on board (sans Weaver), why not? It's a week's work tops and a paycheck. Even in his own blog he notes his kids are off to college and he has too much time on his hands.

Here's to hoping he'll come around via peer pressure.

Let's all bake him a cake.

Fair enough, still seems a little weird though.

I think we should all send him a lovely email asking him very nicely and bake a cake as Mustin suggests.

Maybe the powers at destructiod could get in contact with him and threaten violence or free cake on our behalf to do it.

You know what they need to do? They need to call up Frank Caliendo (guy from the Dish Network commercials) and have him perform Rick Moranis' lines. He does a SPOT ON performance of him in Ghostbusters.

If they really needed his character they could just hold an audition for a sound alike voice actor. (Change his appearance a bit too, obviously..) Wouldnt be the first time in history..
