GH: Van Halen lands, yours should be there Monday photo

For a Guitar Hero game featuring a band as legendary as Van Halen Guitar Hero: Van Halen has had surprisingly little hype -- as in almost none. There's been a reveal trailer and some stuff with it at E3, but other than that it's been all quiet on the rock n' roll front. We didn't even have an official track listing press release, which is one of those things that all GH games get (the full track list did slip out). Because of the lack of PR for the game you might interested to check out 5frets's screens of the game, which show of GH: Van Halen in detail.

A lucky gamer who lives directly next to the shipping facility that Activision evidently uses to ship their games out got his version of GH: Van Halen quicker than the rest of us thanks to his proximity and snapped a few shots. Evidently the game works exactly like GH: Metallica. On a more disappointing note, it does not seem to allow for exporting songs to GH5, which sucks. The version in the pics is the one that came free with the purchase of GH5, and considering the USPS is pretty decent at getting things out in a timely manner, that means most of you who signed up for the game should be getting the package in the mail on Monday or Tuesday.

Hopefully it's heavier on the Van Halen than the Van Hagar.

I knew this was lame but does it have to proof that its more of a lame buy with no case.

Wow, a game where I'm more interested in the bonus tracks than the game's headline band.

And I'm not interested in the bonus tracks.

It doesn't come in a real case?
Well it was free.

No hard case? No press? Free?

Once again proving Van Halen just isn't cool enough to be a classic. Just 80s kids won't shut up about 'em.

That said I'll be standing by my mailbox on Monday. Because, well, did I mention free?

Yep, sounds like I'm going to be renting this along with GH5.

Hey, man. You can hate on Van Hagar all you want, it's pretty trite pop music.
But do not, I repeat, do not hate on Diamond Dave. The man made 80's rock music what it is. Van Halen would have never made it if not for the sheer amount of charisma that guy possessed, and the songs off of the first few albums are etched indelibly into the annals of rockage. "Unchained" makes me want to go nuts on an army of zombies armed with nothing but two katana and an iPod.

I would probably play this if it was a Rock Band game instead of GH...but at least Alter Bridge is in one game. Now get going to Rock Band!

I'll give you some early Van Halen as being cool.

Maybe one of my problems is I don't like Van Halen the guy very much. I know here in MD whenever Van Halen gets played I cringe. They loop Jump and Eruption so many times I wanna kill somebody.

Which reminds me, Eruption is in this game...woah.

It's funny you mention Hagar because I was listening to his solo album last night which has been on my to do list for a while and I was surprised by how decent it was.

@ Xzyliac: I feel oddly compelled to defend Van Halen but I think I'll resist the urge. They were kinda shit. Help me out though, what is an "80's kid"? Are those the people who wear the pre-faded Ninja Turtles t-shirts in an ironic and/or nostalgic fashion? Cause if that's them then where I'm from we just call them cunts.

Eddie Van Halen was an inspiration to countless other great guitar players. There is no denying that the man is phenomenal on guitar.

Hagar is a nut. He believes he was abducted by aliens.

I think the $100 dollar guitar my parents got me when I was 13 allowed me to be creative, rather than just being a consumer.

I do not get this virtual music thing. Just strum on a tennis racket like was doing, or buy your child a guitar so they can learn to actually play a song.

What kind of crap parents spend hundreds of dollars to exclude any educational value, self expression or self pride from their child's hobbies?

And if they want to play drums?

And this dick move by the douche twins to not have the bass player for 20 plus years playing the base lines?

Projectile Vomit...

It's out? The whole thing? On Tuesday?

For a GH game to get that little exposure is a very bad sign.

I love how people still seem to think owning a guitar makes you creative. nevermind it does not unless you have a lot of knowledge of various forms of music and half a clue how to write music.

No case? Even if I was given this for free, I'd be disappointed for the lack of a proper case. And why is it based on Guitar Hero: Metallica, of all things? I mean, Aerosmith was based on GHIII, Metallica was based on GH:WT, so why didn't they base Van Halen on GH5? Just seems lazy.

@ SovietMudkipz

This is just the advance release for the people who bought Guitar Hero 5 in the correct time frame. The full release of the game doesn't happen until December, so they've got a little time to start promoting it. Still, I'm not expecting much; it has a release date of less than a week before Christmas, so Activision must not care about this much. I'm guessing some sort of deal was made for this game, and only afterward did they realize that it wasn't such a great idea, so now it's just a contractual obligation.

But this game isn't about being creative. It's about enjoying the music a la air guitar or headbanging. Albeit more expensive but if it's what you're into who gives a shit?

I have a $1300 guitar set up, write, perform, and I can still enjoy these games. Seriously there is not a single piece of logic in assuming this is some Nazi plot to rid the world of actual guitars and drums. People need to chill out.

Re: lack of hard case.

I'm sure someone will put a scan up when the proper release comes out. If you're like me and have a number of green cases from preorders at Best Buy, etc., you can just print out the cover and stick it in one of those cases. Voila.
