Perhaps it's just my ConSARS acting up again, but truth be told I probably wouldn't have noticed Metroid Prime Trilogy's lacking visual effects unless someone pointed them out to me in a miniaturized online motion picture clip show, which is exactly what has happened.

YouTube user Piccolocube has put together a comparison video which shows the difference between Metroid Prime on the good ol' GameCube and its new Wii-based compilation disc brother, Metroid Prime Trilogy. This is the part where you stop reading, watch the video, come back to this page, and nod your head while saying, "oohhh, now I see."

Or, you could take the "ignorance is bliss" route and skip the video. That's what I would've done.

its interesting that there is no shockwave. Well, these are three games in one, they had to compress them somehow.

Aww I liked the particle effects. Oh well, I'm sure they had to compromise in order to fit 3 full games on one disc.

They managed to make the poor water effects from prime 1 even worse!

Oh well at least it's minor stuff but I wonder why they took them out :/

Didn't notice; don't really care. The game's still good, regardless of platform or whatever minute graphical differences.

It's noticeable, but....why? It might not be by much, but the Wii IS more powerful than the Gamecube.
What gives?

I didn't even notice the differences. Though, I did like the ice covering your arm cannon when charging, the cool case for Trilogy makes up for it's lack of.

No longer two gamecubes duct taped together; From now on the Wii shall be known as being two N64s taped together.

The ice beam thing is a bummer. Those particle effects were a big part of the initial immersion. No, it's not a huge deal, and I'm not going on a rant, but only Nintendo would re-release games that are, what? 10 years old? And make them look worse.

Why would that even be necessary? That Ice Beam effect was one of the coolest things ever.

Excuse me while I replay my gamecube copy for the millionth time.

BTW when you play a Gamecube game on Wii, it's actually running on exactly the same hardware as the GameCube as the hardware in the Wii is a minor revision on the GameCubes hardware, and though minor the changes necessitate that the additional hardware be locked up to allow the gamecube game to run otherwise the code freaks out on the extra bits and pieces. I wonder if this is a compression issue or simply due to the changes in API from Wii to Gamecube... Still, no matter. This is strictly for those without the games already. Only Nin console I have left is a Gamecube now anyways.

There's no way that this was a matter of compression/storage capacity. Metroid Prime:Trilogy is on a dual-layered DVD. It can hold 9.4 gb of information. MP 3 was a single-layer DVD, which would have taken up half that amount. And the Gamecube discs only held about 1.5 gb each. With an extra 1.5 gb for menus and modifications to spare, particle effects shouldn't have been left on the cutting room floor.

I'm really curious to hear what happened with this.

I was actually wondering why this happened, and I know now:

In the original Metroid Prime for the GameCube, the gun effects, including the heat effect coming out of the tip and the ice covering the gun when charging the Ice Beam, weren't built onto the gun itself, but the environment around the gun. Since you were always aiming in the same place, the effects were always in the right spots. Well, now in the Wii version, you can aim everywhere, so to compensate for that, they took it out. MP2, however, was built the right way, so no changes needed to be made.

I miss the detail the first MP had, but at the same time, there's more detail in the other games now, like the remote power indicator at the top of Samus's helmet in MP2, and the awesome universal title screen.

Yeah, I doubt this was a compression or storage issue. These effects wouldn't add a lot of space to the game, they're merely graphical effects and don't really require anything like new models or textures in order to function... Honestly, it's probably either a framerate thing, i.e. Nintendo wanted the game to run a steady 60fps, so they removed some special effects to eliminate risk of dropping below that, or it's a lack of optimization to Wii's GPU, i.e. the effects may have been done a different way on GC's GPU than on Wii's GPU, and they either forgot to make the optimizations or just didn't feel like it.

Just guessing, though.

That video made me miss my gamecube...seriously Metroid Prime 1+2 were the reasons I bought the system, then some douche stole it.
The only thing I'm sad about is the ice effect. I remember when that happened the first time back in...what was it, 2001? I was like "holy cow this game is THE FUTURE OF AWESOME." Now it's gone. :/ Ah well.

For all those saying it must be that they've compressed them... The original games each came on a single Gamecube disc right? Well GC discs held 1.5Gb of data. The new compilation comes on one DVD (I assume) a single layer Wii DVD disc holds 4.7Gb of data, a dual layer a whopping 9.4Gb. Even assuming the original games used up all 1.5Gb on the disc, and that the trilogy is on a single layer DVD that's still 1.5 x 3 = 4.5. Without compression they still had just over 200mb of headroom - plenty to implement the new control scheme.

That said I would agree with Agnates, the changes are minimal or for the best and the textures look far sharper in 480p.

Also I've just noticed that HAxan already made my storage issue point, ah well.

I'd also like to correct myself: a dual layer DVD holds 8.55Gb, rookie mistake -sorry.

I'm sure it's because they promised 60fps and the Wii is somewhat less powerful than two GameCube's duct taped together. The framerate on the Wii version is DAMN nice, though. Since it's using the IR pointer exclusively I think it's a fair enough trade off since 30fps makes the pointer feel pretty laggy.

I honestly wouldn't have noticed if it hadn't been pointed out. But it's been a long time since I played Prime. Between the still solid graphics and the incredible framerate it might still be the best looking game on the platform, for whatever that's worth.

Dude, the Wii plays gamecube games as if it were a gamecube itself, what you talking about? D:

I would've thought it was a compression issue at first given the fact that the Wii isn't a hardware upgrade over the gamecube, something Nintendo clearly stated at one point. That bit about the free-aiming on the wii though totally makes sense.

Kudos, Destructoid, for a more accurate headline.

This is not a big deal. We'll all miss the little effects, sure, but I can think of no sane human being (much less gamer) who would choose the GC version over the Trilogy version simply to savor the ice and water effects. In this case, awards/convenience/motion control/blooming/480p: FTW.

While the pixel scientists scrutinize the graphical effects and put up comparison videos on YouTube, I'll be playing the games.

Oh, and about the water stuff, I heard that's just how the European version was from the start, and the Trilogy is based of the PAL releases of the games. Don't know if that's true about the original European versions, though, as I've never played a copy.

I swear gamers are insufferable sometimes. Seriously, who notices shit like this? Who cares? This is the equivalent of the jackasses who find 'movie mistakes' in popular titles and feel the need to point them out to anybody who'll listen; if only their own lives weren't so sad maybe they'd do something productive and actually create something of their own? Shit, there's a novel idea.
